Intellectually, though, the waters are muddier. Do not let anybody tell you it is an obvious move to repatriate the Victorian. The Raptors are reportedly dangling three years and US$36-million, and that is no small commitment to give a 38-year-old point guard, even one who has been defying age. Playing Nash any more than 30 minutes per night would be a huge risk, which makes a very good backup point guard necessary. At that point, you have to really think about how you feel about restricted free agent Jerryd Bayless, if the Raptors do retain his rights.

On the positive side, Nash immediately improves the talent that the Raptors have. DeMar DeRozan can ease up on the things he has been slow to learn and embrace running; Andrea Bargnani stretches the floor perfectly to give Nash room, and that works the other way around, too; Jonas Valanciunas figures to be a great pick-and-roll companion for the point guard; Amir Johnson runs the floor exceptionally for a big man, while Linas Kleiza and Terrence Ross can (hopefully) knock down three-pointers in transition. A good point guard makes those around him better, and Nash is unnaturally obsessed with figuring out how to maximize what is around him.

Also, if the Raptors do indeed use the amnesty clause on Jose Calderon, they would still have room to either spend some more money — perhaps as much as US$10-million annually — on a small forward in free agency or to absorb one through a trade with a team looking to dump a salary. (The latter, in this case, is more likely than the former scenario.)

However, where does a team with Nash, a middle-of-the-road small forward plus the rest of the Raptors core really get you? To a low playoff seed? It is impossible to see the Raptors winning against the likes of Miami (ha!) or Chicago, and the Indianas, New Yorks and Bostons of the world still look worlds away. The Raptors would then be in danger of becoming a dreaded “treadmill team” — a team stuck either in the lower playoff seeds or the end of the draft lottery. It becomes nearly impossible to gain elite talent through the draft in such a situation. The Raptors, certainly, need elite talent.

Dunno where that 18/10 came from.

Does he have an impact? sure, is he worth 11.5 mil? No, not to me.
When will people realize that #s don't tell the whole story.

KG was a BEAST for the Celtics. Hell, even his 18 and 10 #s during the playoffs don't even come close to reflecting how much he brought to the team in that playoff run alone.

He was one of the best, if not THE BEST, big man in the 2012 playoffs.
