Default Nash - Public enemy #1

I want to preface this by saying that I don't think BC should get a pass for f-ing this up. He screwed up and gambled everything on Nash coming here and he failed.

With that said, Nash is as much to blame. While he never directly said that he wants to come to Toronto, he implied it in several ways and gave us hope by:

1) Saying that he wants to get paid
2) Saying that he doesn't necessarily care as much about winning or chasing a ring
3) Suggesting that he wouldn't mind ending his career in Toronto

There's a reason why we were favorites to land him prior to July 1st and it had a lot to do with what Nash and his reps were saying to the media. So what happened next? Well the Raps offered him a 3 year 36 million dollar contract + perks and he literally took that deal and used it to negotiate a better contract elsewhere. Regardless of what you think of the guy he used us for LEVERAGE and we'll never know for sure if he ever wanted to play for the Raps to begin with. And while he's free to do that, I wouldn't expect someone like Nash to pull that shit on the only Canadian team in the league, let alone any other team.

If I was in his shoes I would make it clear from the get go that I had little intention of playing in Toronto. Sure, that might of costed him a bit of money (since the Raps DID drive up his value with that offer) but it would of been the classy thing to do in this situation. Then the Raps wouldn't sit on that offer for four days while missing out on other free agents. And who knows, maybe we would of pulled the trigger on a draft day trade to land us Lowry. We've literally messed up our summer by chasing a ghost.

The worst part is the fact that this franchise has been screwed so many times but never by someone as cherished as Nash. He's a two-time MVP and the pride of Canadian basketball. Plus, he's the GM of freaking team canada and apparently an ambassador of the sport in this country. Regardless of what you all think, he's ruined his rep in Toronto and if he thinks people are going to forget about this he's crazy. He might as well step down as Canada's GM too because joining a conference rival on independence day while it was initially rumored that he would sign with Toronto on Canada's Day says a lot about how much he cares about this country. From a PR perspective this whole situation is about as bad as it gets in my opinion and I can tell you I'll be first in line to boo Nash when he comes "home" to play us in a Knicks jersey, assuming the rumors are true and he ends up going down that road.

Honestly, we don't owe him a single thing at this point and he's done nothing to earn our respect as Canadians. He's avoided the national team for ten years and now he's used the only Canadian NBA team to pad his own pockets in NY. He's a sellout.

There's more going on here than meets the eye. I don't think Nash is being malicious. Another report about his kids needing to be in the city he relocates to. His ex-wife has to agree to that. That could be all smoke and mirrors, or it could be the real thing.
Who knows?
This isn't about Canada, it's about Toronto being a gutter team. Sure he may have temporarily damaged his image, but no more than refusing to play for his country for the last decade?
His Canadianness is subject to his NBA persona, and status as a world class athlete and HOF'er. Colangelo et al. making a pitch based on that only reiterates the reality that Toronto is a gutter team with prospects and projects, which regardless of age, money, or future position, will give any top-tier FA pause.

Don't blame Nash. He's allowed to do what he likes for himself, his family, etc. He doesn't owe any of us jack shit. I love how fans think they have a "holier-than-thou" attitude. "Oh if I was an NBA player I would sacrifice my wants for the pleasure of a few fans."

Instead, blame should be placed on Colangelo. The moves he has (and more importantly, has NOT) made as a result of blindly believing Nash would come to Toronto are horrible. This Nash thing has become really ugly and Colangelo HAS to start trying to move on. STOP TREADING WATER.

pretty much! It makes no sense, it was a no brainer to try and get him here. Most are in agreement with that. He offered more than anyone. IMO Nash should have told him pretty quickly he rather go to NY or Dallas. The whole waiting for Williams was also extremely stupid!

So you're telling me this stuff never came up before? He dÓdnt think he needs to relocate if he pursues free agency? What did he do when he played in Phoenix and lived in Ny. I'm sorry but it's a bs excuse if I'm thinking about changing jobs I look at all those things well before the process starts

And I'm 100% positive that if he came out days ago and said he wasn't signing, you would still flip shit.

So when you come out and say all that right from the start, do you not think NYK would try and lowball then?

To be fair, there is no indication that he'd actually rather go to Dallas. And the NYK sign and trade option is a recent development - clearly he didn't want to go to NY for the mid-level. Like he said, he sees money as respect, so when his preferred team managed to scrounge up the money, that avenue became more attractive.

Everyone involved pretty much behaved properly. Colangelo tried to sign a marquee free agent. Said free agent made (is making, I guess) his choice, in his own time, as is his right.

Didn't work out for us this time around. Simple as that.

Probably. I certainly would have been upset. But at this point, do you really think that he wanted to come here? And if so why string us along? If he told Colangelo by monday that he doesn't think he'll be a Raptor and that he wants to be a Knick of go back to Dallas i would have been upset originally but that i can respect a lot more than this bullshit.

Can we get out of the Field's verbal agreement? A chance to make Canada's only team revelant again while given the highest salary-NO! A chance to make Canada qualify for the Olympics-No! Great ambassador for Canada.

I don't think he strung us along. As DanH said, this sign and trade opportunity between PHX and NY is a recent development.

We all know NY is Nash's offseason home. He liked the Raptors because of the money they were throwing at him. When recent developments suggested that the Knicks could throw money at him as well, of course he would choose home over Toronto.

And yes, Toronto isn't home to Nash. Just because Toronto is in Canada doesn't mean its home.
