Cool Mitchell has advice for Triano

Quote:
"At some point you hope the owners start realizing that you just can't coach in this league without having coached," Mitchell was saying the other night. "People sit there and think they can do it. ... If you could just do the Xs and Os, yeah, you might figure that out. But it's, how do you deal with people? How do you deal with your team when you're down 20 at halftime? You have to know when to kick 'em in the ass, and you have to know when to go in there and put your arms around 'em and love 'em? ... I had to learn that."
Quote:
Mitchell knows the challenge.

"People don't understand how relentless I was on Jose and Chris. I cut 'em no slack," said Mitchell. "Andrea, it was different. I cut Andrea a lot of slack."

Perhaps part of the problem for Triano is that he forged his relationship with Bosh and Calderon and Bargnani, three-fifths of an under-performing starting five, as an assistant coach, the smiling pat on the back that soothed the pain of Mitchell's verbal whip. For Triano to suddenly find relentlessness? No easy task.

"You pick your spots," Mitchell said. "Sometimes you just have to walk away and say, `Don't say (anything). It's a bad night. Don't compound it.' ... And sometimes you really get on their ass after you win. ... You pick your spots."

He's right.

But the thing with Mitchell was that while he was an excellent motivator, and excellent communicator, he just didn't have the technical aspect of the game down... and that was something this team needed. They still need it.

Butch Carter had it, but i don't think we've had a strong technical coach since him.

That's why we had Triano as an assistant. Phil Jackson said his coaching is 90% personality coaching (players) the other 10% is coaching basketball.

yeah - well i guess that works for him when he can rely on two of the greatest players of our generation playing on his teams.

Other coaches don't have that luxury.

I terribly miss smitch. His Players respected him and he was a great motivator. May that be why Calderon is struggling? Even since smitch left his game is on the decline. Triano is not a head coach and i dont know why he still has a head coaching job in this league.

Jay Triano would start Bargnani over Luc Longley for the 72-10 bulls. Rodman couldn't create his own shot, and neither could Longley... but who cares? They won.

We don't need Smitch back, but we need someone that's closer to his coaching style than Triano's.

I know Jeffb rags on triano's record alot, but I'm curious (not sure if it's good or bad).. what's our record since Bargnani has been our starting Center?

we need someone that has the balls to bench players like Andrea, which is contrary to what the management wants.

The more I think about it now the more that I think Triano is more similar to Lenny Wilkens than any other we've ever had. Nice guy.... good X's and O's.. but just doesn't have the "people" aspect down.

I respect what Sam said up there and I always believed that he was a good motivator.... I just got tired of the lack of basketball strategy from him.

What we seem to need is a Sam/Jay hybrid.

Someone that knows their shit..... and someone who isn't afraid to get in his players' faces to get it done.

If Mitch was here Caldy would be seeing alot more minutes. Mitch would have Caldy playing 40 mins per game. Mitch was a Caldy guy and ok with TJ leaving. Thats what u get when you live in the Falls and get to hear the real stories behind the scenes. Mitch takes great pleasure in Caldys game because he broke him like a wild horse.
Mitch > Caldy Bosh
Triano > Bargs

that's some great insight, i wonder why he admitted to taking it easy on Bargs tho, maybe he just doesn't see him improving at all??

which is pretty realistic man his bball IQ is so low, i really can't see him getting better on D, he has no awareness and smarts to him whatsoever, im sure his shot will get better but that's about it.
