Mavs shopping JHo hard?

Got this from RealGM

Quote:
A few execs have told me the Mavericks have passed Toronto as the team currently pushing hardest to make a trade. And the growing sense I get is that the Mavericks, for all their stated reluctance to do so, are prepared to move Josh Howard before the deadline if they can bring back the wing explosiveness and/or post scoring that we've mentioned before as areas of concern in Dallas.

Just days ago, I didn't think so. I saw the prospect of moving Howard as highly unlikely. My feeling was Dallas would continue to shop Jerry Stackhouse's cap-friendly contract and Brandon Bass' and DeSagana Diop's unfriendly contracts, hoping that the Stackhouse-and-Bass combination would eventually net something positive.

Yet in the course of all those aggressive calls, sources say Howard's name is coming up more and more, either because of the interest of teams on the other end of the line or the Mavs' growing willingness to consider another shake-up.

"Dallas is talking to everyone," one rival exec said.

The Mavs' acquisition of the selfless Jason Kidd in February and the coaching switch from Avery Johnson to Rick Carlisle were supposed to help Howard more than any Mav. But they haven't. You can attribute some of his struggles to a nagging ankle injury, but Howard has strangely never flourished alongside Kidd and isn't playing with the bounce that made him an All-Star, leading some folks in town to wonder whether he'd rather be elsewhere.

But if that's the case, Howard hasn't let on. Nor are the Mavs likely to rush into anything if they don't get the offer they want.

That's because Dallas is convinced Howard's very reasonable salary this season ($10.4 million) and next ($11.4 million) and the $12.3 million team option held by the Mavs for the 2010-11 season -- all attractive contract details -- combine to negate any trade value the 28-year-old has squandered through declining production and off-court transgressions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Didn't mean to suggest the Raptors have put the phone down.

They're still strongly against parting with Andrea Bargnani, but they're also looking to upgrade on the wing (Chicago's Andres Nocioni is a possibility) while trying to determine whether the Chris Bosh/Jermaine O'Neal experiment -- which hasn't worked out like a high-post/low-post combo as Toronto imagined -- can be salvaged or is best abandoned quickly.

Moving O'Neal certainly won't be easy. Yet it probably isn't impossible because O'Neal's $23 million salary next season is an expiring contract.

JO/Moon for Howard/Diop or Howard/Damp could be feasible. We get the better player, Dallas gets rid of a bad contract and relieves themselves of the Howard controversy and sets themselves up for 2010, while getting a player who worked with Carlisle before

Anyways I'd MUCH prefer that to a Marion deal.

Marion wouldnt fit on this team with Jose playing the way he is. He wouldnt be able to score at all, although hed help on defence its not worth it unless we have a specific target in free agency.

I'd much rather go after Howard/Damp for JO/kaps type of deal. Fuck capspace t his year if we're not even going to get anyone, and I'm not a big fan of Marion at the wing. Hes best at PF in a high tempo offence, at sf in any other type of offence hes a 12+9 guy whos good on defence but his contract is bleh. Id much rather get the 18 ppg scorer who can play defence then the 12 ppg one whose contract expires. We'd be set forever in the frontcourt, we'd just have to get one more good sg and we'd be set.

A JO & Dirk front court would be sick in Dallas and also free up a ton of money in 2010 for the Mavs to go after hometown boy Bosh.

I would like us to try and get Nocioni but if we can't then I'd like to get J Ho. Marion is by far my last choice

Could we possibly see a hughes/Nocioni or a Gordon/Nocioni for JO, it works financially?

If I'm BC you can't pay me to have Larry Hughes on this team. He contributes nothing except inconsistency, underwhelming effort, and unfulfilled potential. Complete waste of talent IMO, and not someone that is going to make this team better.

Nocioni is a solid player but in terms of maximizing this team's potential, I think you have to go for Howard. He definitely doesn't bring the same level of physicality as Nocioni but he'd automatically become our best perimeter defender, and he's a legitimate 20 point scoring threat every single night.

I think the bigger incentive for Hughes is his 13 mil expiring next year. This would give us the same leverage keeping JO's contract would, and then we presumabely get Nocioni or Hinrich and Gray on top of that. It should also be noted Nocioni's contract declines year to year, not goes up. He gets paid 8 mil this year but 6.8ish in 2010, around Kapono level. Which I think is a right price for Noc

I don't disagree with you we need someone who can break defences off the dribble someone who can penetrate to the basket as none of our exisiting players does this. That said only a hand full of teams can be our trading partners in a JO trade his contract is huge.

I'd love a Gordon+Nocioni for JO trade. But somebody should take compromising photos of their GM for that to happen.

He's tough number 1.
Number 2 he does a little of everything, even if he gets the blinders on every now and then.

Look at the impact Voskul has had on the team with bringin the grit, now imagine a starting SF who can score and rebound well doing the same thing.

why I don't want Noccioni

1. Lets compare Moon to Noccioni (Stats)

Moon 7.2 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.24 stl, 0.9 blks
Noccioni 10 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.2 apg, 0.38 stl, 0.35 blks

not a big difference. You get 2.8 more points, same assist average, but everything else is a downgrade.

2. Contract

Moon 1 yr/$711,000 mil
Noccioni 5 yr/$36.5 mil

As we can see Noccioni has a bad contract

3. Chicago and Toronto have the same record. He doesn't come from a better team/doesn't improve them either

I would hope BC can get someone better for JO

Contract is gonna change after this season.

Nocioni isnt having a typical season in Chicago(Rose dominates ball alot taking some effectiveness away from him-not to mention he is playing behind Deng)

If given 30 minutes a game Nocioni would give you at least 15 or 16ppg, 5rpg and .5 steals and blocks on 45% from the feild and 39% from 3. Not great numbers but certainly better.

But the best aspect is that although Moon gets steals and blocks, he is alway biting on pump fakes and jumping out into passing lanes which 4 out of 5 time results in him botching the play and the other team gets a wide open shot. Nocioni never bites on pump fakes and is alway aggressively in his mans face-almost to a fault, committing hard fouls at a pace of at least 4 per game.

i agree with TO2988, if the best we can get for JO is Noccioni, then we're fucked.

This is why I don't think JO is gonna get traded this year. He'll be either traded at the draft or sometime in the off-season - no one knows what they're gonna get. Most teams are going to be hesitant about trading for him because of his health- and giving up a piece of their puzzle for him - teams would be more accomodating after the season....and we're not gonna go after cap space - we don't want to be caught empty handed. Most of our roster will be in place by the time the FA bonanza rolls around.
