Marion to Dallas in Unconfirmed Four Team Deal

Veeeeerry interesting.

That amount of space allows them to then swap Marion in a sign-and-trade (for a healthy salary) to Dallas for Stackhouse plus $2M-plus-Something (a pick, some more cash, a desirable minimum salary player, or a combo), then waive Stack for the $2M, and still have all the cap room they need to sign Hedo. Marion gets his money, Toronto nets Something, and Dallas gets Marion. Everyone comes out ahead.

That wouldn't be the only choice for Toronto, of course. Once they open up that cap space, they could simply sign another player for that $2.9M or less. But if Colangelo is angling for a deal using Marion, other teams over the cap besides Dallas will have to send him equal salary in return - and that won't work for the Raps because it would mess up the Turkoglu deal.

Getting Stackhouse wouldn't mess up anything.

More importantly, Dallas doesn't have to be the actual destination for Marion, and I think probably wouldn't be. The Stack Chip could simply be the facilitator for Marion to land in a place that wants him badly, and is willing to send plenty of compensation (a shot-creating wing, for example?) to Dallas as well as Something to Toronto in order to get him.

...Is it just me or would the Raptors just be better off using cap space created from dealing up to land a player through free agency?

If we do this deal, we should keep Stackhouse.

Think someone would take Hump for a 2nd rounder?

I think someone SHOULD get hump for a second rounder. I'm surprised it's hard to move him to be honest.

He had a broken bone. That wouldn't scare me off too much as a GM, nothing like other injuries.

this is just to confusing and to complicated a process to me.

so, we get stackhouse and some other guy from another team for marion and then we drop stackhouse and that leaves us with 2 million and a new player? is that correct?

Why does Dallas want Marion?

So we sign and trade Marion to Dallas. For how much? Does Marion gets what he wanted money-wise, or less?

Sounds pretty good.

One option I wondered about is if acquiring a draft pick from this year's draft is possible and if that could somehow work because they don't have contracts yet, right?

I don't know if it's realistic but just throwin' it out here.

not sure about that one mr4th... i assume that, because 1st round picks get guaranteed contracts, if you traded for the rights to a guy you would have to sign him, or at least you would have to take the cap hold if you sent him overseas. and of course, if that contract eats into the cap space we wouldn't have room to sign hedo. don't think it's possible.

Before you even know which player has been drafted, there is usually a cap hold on your salary for the pick. If you were to trade to acquire the rights to an unsigned draft pick, they would still represent a cap hold against your salary until you renounce them, sign them to their actual deal, or trade them. Wouldn't help.

Why wouldn't they keep Marion?

And I think Stack wouldn't even be that bad of a pickup for us... or do we have to renounce him to make space?

Kidd/Howard/Marion/Nowitzki/Gortat and Terry as a 6th man is pretty good.

apparently dallas wants to trade their expiring contracts (damp+stack+wright) for a starting 2-guard which sounds better to me than having to start howard at sg... then again dallas likes to run so marion might fit..

Stackhouse is done. They'd be best to waive him. Now Sookie - there's a whole other Stackhouse.

they HAVE to waive stackhouse
even then, if it's true that the moment you go under the cap space (including the cap holds), you lose the MLE.

So for us, it makes little sense to do this.

The Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors are discussing a sign-and-trade for Shawn league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Dallas is dangling the partially guaranteed contract of Mavs forward Jerry Stackhouse to acquire Marion. Stackhouse, 34, has only $2 million of his $7 million salary guaranteed for this season, and whomever trades for Stackhouse can buy out the deal by Aug. 10. The Raptors aren’t likely interested in taking back salary in a sign-and-trade deal for Marion, a former All-Star forward, so Stackhouse is an intriguing possibility.

It’s possible that Dallas would have to sweeten the deal with cash and/or draft picks to satisfy the Raptors.

The Raptors were close to re-signing Marion until Hedo Turkoglu had a change of heart and agreed to a 5 year, $53 million contract with the Raptors. Toronto needs to renounce Marion, Anthony Parker and Carlos Delfino to create the cap space to sign Turkoglu.

After a midseason trade from Miami, Marion averaged 14 points and eight rebounds with the Raptors.
