Default Magloire: "This year is going to be a different team"

I'm loving the culture shift that some of these players are bringing.

Quote:
The six-foot-11, 265-pound Magloire is hoping to instill a new attitude with his hometown team. He gives the Raptors a tough, physical presence that they haven't had on a consistent basis since Charles Oakley was dishing out hard fouls over a decade ago.

"We've just got to set the tone," Magloire said. "This year it's going to be a different team."

Magloire, 33, spent the last three seasons with the Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat, primarily as a backup. He signed a one-year contract with the Raptors last week to become the first Canadian player in franchise history.

Magloire said his collision with DeRozan was not intentional.

"Our objective is stopping our opponent first and scoring second," Magloire said. "So with that being said, we've got to start the trend in practice."

I'm really liking what Magloire is saying, but Carter today said they want to be tough not dirty necessarily but they don't want to give up easy uncontested shots, he said if you're tired or don't want to defend you need to get off the floor. lol

Let's hope this translates.

Some more from a different article.

Quote:
“Just going for the ball, nothing intentional ... Our objective is stopping the opponent first, scoring second. We have to start the trend at practice.”

While Magloire and 277-pounder Aaron Gray will provide the bulk of the brawn inside, point guard Anthony Carter will make Raptors opponents feel his presence from the backcourt.

“Oh ya, that’s the type of team we’re going to be. It’s going to go back to those Pat Riley New York Knicks days,” Carter said.

Faced with a shortage of offensive talent compared to most opponents, the new-look Raptors under Dwane Casey intend to make up for that deficit by grinding games out and wearing down adversaries through physicality at the other end.

That doesn’t mean they will be abusing the rulebook though, clarified Carter.

“We don’t want to play dirty, we just want to play tough. We don’t want no bad reputation of trying to hurt people, but we need to make a statement that this is how we’re going to play.”

Added Davis: “Teams are going to know we’re going to foul hard, we’re not going to back down from no one.”

That’s a foreign, but welcome concept in a town where the less than imposing Vince Carter and Chris Bosh have defined the franchise for far too long.

DeRozan is buying in and Casey believes that even leading scorer Andrea Bargnani is as well — perhaps because he has no other choice.

“Andrea has been physical, putting his body on people ... he almost has to out of survival,” Casey said.

“When you have Jamaal Magloire and Aaron Gray around you better hit somebody or else you’re going to get your head knocked off.”

That’s not to say that Magloire isn’t against handing out niceties as well.

The 19th selection of the 2000 NBA draft and former all-star is high on DeRozan and Davis.

“I think (DeRozan) has the chance to be an all-star in this league if he continues to work, work, work,” Magloire said.

“I’m very impressed with Ed, he is very deceptive. He’s going to surprise a lot of people.

“Their work ethic and will to win, (in) two-three years, you’re going to see them at all-star weekend.”

I'm especially excited over the idea of playing like the Knicks of the 90s. I secretly loved watching that team. Their frontline of Anthony Mason, Charles Oakley, Patrick Ewing and John Starks were fun to watch but just punished you. If that's going to be our identity, sign me up.

It would be nice if Magloire was influenced by the Riley regimen, and brings that here. Carter also talked about how much he gained from playing in Miami. This is my kind of basketball that these guys are talking about. They might get me to go to a few games at this rate.

A part of me is skeptical and thinking that Magloire is doing a sales job in return for BC picking him up. But another part of me thinks he must have done something right to make it in Miami for three years.

It is about time there is a new attitude with this team. Hopefully it moves on with the other players on the team and everybody shows it on the court.

Gotta love the early attitude ... If sustained over 2 years, it could create the right culture.
Having a stable coach and GM with the same bent on culture is key. Only way to build a deserved foundation for a franchise.
Luck also works if if get a superstar .. We haven't had much luck.

if casey can really make them responsable for their actions or more likely for their lack of effort on the defense, and BC doesn't tell him who he must play or not, we should be doing fine this season.

the roster seems balance to me.
(yeah, we need a 3 who can really start)
maybe i'm naive, but i really think this team can do better than last year. lets just hope we don't get too much injury this year !

casey, carter, magloire, gray btingd a new mentality here. JJ, amir and Davis have it too, so i think that can only work !

ON Gaia, i mis the games so much !!!

That came to mind for me as well. He was a pretty good mouthpiece for the GM.

I forgot to mention the connection Butler had with Miami as well. There could be a real importing of culture. That'd be nice.

Talk is so cheap.

That's my stance. Most people are so excited to have basketball back, myself included, that the ole Raptor Forum Fickle and short memories are starting to surface. I want to feel the same but I just can't.

My real opinion is more like this; Toronto will see better attitudes all around, with a more responsible effort. Team play in general will improve. There will be less tendency to fade as games wear on, less tendency to come out flat to start first, and third quarters. that said, the youth, and over all lack of talent level will keep Toronto from being anything more than an also ran. Their attention to detail, hard work and youth will steal them a few games against the older teams who look past them as the season moves on with such a tight schedule, however they are still a long way off.

I really just hope they don't over achieve, unless they achieve so much that they make the post season. Playoffs change players and they are incredibly valuable, but 9th-11th place in the conference is an absolute nightmare for a rebuilding team.

Go Raps....
