Magic Magic GM Smith Explains Why Vince & Not Hedo

Q: Other than an all-star resume, what does Carter give you that Turk did not?

Otis: I thought my core guys needed to be able to walk into a gym and see Vince Carter shooting at the other end and say, 'Now we got help. Now we got a guy who can do it.' I thought that was as big for their psyches as anything else.

This is silly, they didn't even choose Vince over Hedo. They offered Hedo a contract, he declined, and they traded for Vince. The Vince trade would have happened whether Hedo signed with Orlando or not.

Good for their "phyches" to see VC shooting jump shots in the gym before practice?

Umm...Ok Otis.

This dude is getting on my nerve by talking like he didn't want Hedo back

fact is he couldn't afford Hedo so he made a smart move by bringing in a good replacement.

and Hedo creates offense with his forearm mostly, which will be called eventually
he won't get as many open looks w/o Dwight

I see you wrote in Haiku form?

A. VC being a better shooter than Hedo is debatable. VC being a better scorer is not

B. Dwight on numerous occasions wanted the ball more often. In fact he complained many times in the playoffs that he was being ignored of offence. So, I don't see how "Dwight won't have to take as many shots" argument works to be honest. He never took many in the first place.

C. D12 not being able to create offence is his own fault. All he does is camp near the basket. If he added a small short jumper or even a jump hook like Shaq did when he was with the Lakers, he'd be fine. What this has to do with either Hedo or VC I don't know.

D. Yes I did, however, did you see Hedo's overall improvement as a smart basketball player?

I really think earlier posters hit it on the head. Hedo rejected the initial offer. They went after VC. End of story. It wasn't to get WAAAAY better. It was, ok, time to go to option 1. a.

Then if he doesn't get looks, we can point to Bosh and Bargnani not doing their jobs as big men. Plain and simple.

And almost every player in the league creates offence with their forearm. He's 30 now. If hasn't been called on it since his youth he won't be called on it now.

Let's be clear: They never offered Hedo a contract.

...and there's nothing wrong with what Otis said. "It all came down to getting better." Couldn't have said it better myself.

Let's be clear, you're mistaken

A day after the Magic acquired Vince Carter from the New jersey Nets, Turkoglu's agent said Friday that he sent a notice to Orlando earlier this week that his client will opt out of his contract to become a free agent. Agent Lon Babby said the Magic had made Turkoglu an initial offer that Orlando general manager Otis Smith described as a "jumping off point."

yup... Hedo declined the magic's offer and decided to test the FA market... why do you think Otis got all up in a fizzy over Hedo? he was pissed.
so they moved to plan B, and went after VC. I'm guessing Otis had a master plan to get Hedo to re-sign and still go after VC, but one part got away.
supposedly, they offered up 8-9 mil a year, but Hedo backed off.
guess he wasnt as happy in O-town as everyone suspected.

Hedo declined a player option ($7.3M, I think). Believe the Magic offered a low-ball - maybe 3 year (?) offer before they traded for Vince.

The Magic very obviously offered Hedo less than market value, and less than Hedo wanted. To me, it very clearly said that Smith would pass on Turkoglu to take a chance on someone else. He was able to acquire VC, and I think that is a definite improvement over Turkoglu.

His argument for why he did so doesn't really make sense to me, but it is more politically correct than coming out and saying "Here's all the reasons why VC is better than Turkoglu."

they should do an article with New Jersey's GM and ask why he was trying so hard to get rid of VC... then print both articles side by side.
LOL
