Default Magic Announcers: "Jose 5th best PG in the NBA"

Apparently a Raptors fan that listened to a Magic telecast of last night's game heard the following:

Quote:
The Magic anouncers said tonight during the game that Calderon is at this point in time the 5th best PG in the league behind. Paul, Deron Williams, Nash and Billups....discuss
Ahhh, I love all the props for Jose now-a-days. Keep'em coming.

That's my biggest fear too, but its impossible that we let Jose go. We'll cut half the team and bring in "scabs" before that ever happens.

He was green enough to trade for TJ and his fat contract and serious health issues, so obviously he didnt have a clue the kind of player Jose would become, because TJ's contract is the main thing that will screw us over and have to move Jose (altho i just dont see that happening). I think its time ppl stop acting like BC is a God, his 1st overall pick hasnt panned out and his best move to date is a very injury prone and at often times selfishly inconsistent PG (and dont tell me TJ cant lose you a game as quick as he can win you one). I still think BC is a great GM, but far from Joe Dumars or even his daddy.

With that said its still early in his tenure so i cant say he is bad either, but i think its nuts that every1 acts like he can do no wrong, or that alot of ppl dont realize Daddy made a helluva lot of decisions in PHX with him, or that he seems to listen to his assistent GM more then to himself considering the amount of euro's he always seems interested in.

I honestly don't know what to say to this.

First of all, intelligents GMs or well coaches NEED to surround themselves with people who will challenge and provide GOOD advice. If you have ever taken a business course you'll see that the Japanese business model is based on this mechanism. It is to challenge the leader. BC has done this and it has worked.

Secondly, these "euros" you speak of. If you choose to neglect the fact that BC with limited cap space and a mediocre free agent class signed players on reasonable contracts (Garbo, Pakrer ), short term contracts who would improve our overall basketball IQ, our overall position and help with the youth on our team. Lastly, these same contracts have placed us in a position to contend in the playoffs and as a young team LEARN how to win and then when the contracts expire for these veteran players we can finally move on and utilize the cap space to surround players such as Bosh, Calderon and Bargnani.

Lastly, let me say this. RC Buford is the GM of the Spurs. He was the first to usher in the "international" movement by scouting and finding gems such as Ginboili and Parker (without these two they don't win 3 championships). So all this talk of Euro/international crap is pointless. BC has been following a trend and if you honestly don't see the improvement Bargnani has made this season then you don't pay close enough attention, because if anything this season he's showed that he's gonna be a player.

But maybe we should all doubt the reigning two time GM of the year. I'm sure you were on the Raptors short list right?

this year he got delfino for two second drafts and Moon for free. I think those qualify for good moves.

I like the AP move, i wouldnt call it a mind blowing great pick up that has jumped us in2 contention... Hump barely plays altho i like him... I would like to move Moon ASAP but not a bad pick up.. Altho we got Delfino very cheap, i think thats about what he is worth.. very cheap

I wasnt saying BC is a crappy GM, im saying all raptor fans seem to think you cant question this guy or he is a God. Im glad no1 questioned me saying his Dad probably had alot to do with success in PHX cuz thats pretty much a fact, he has made a couple good moves, but i dont think this makes him beyond reproach and since no1 is defending the TJ pick up im guessing you guys agree he had no clue what Jose was/is and that TJs contract is hurting us aswell as his health (but that was no mystery b4 we got him, every1 knew he was an injury prone sometimes erractic player). TJ is the only top notch player he ever got in any of these moves, u can bring up the small role players he has picked up and most of them are nice, also besides AP none of those guys are starters or get any real min, and Garbo is another injury prone empty $ contract we are getting nothing in return for.

Again, i like BC, but i want to see him make a move for what we really need before i annoit him our savior.

To add something else, i dont think Grunwald was a good GM, but i do think the team that lost to Philly in the 2nd round was a better team then we have now, we had more inside presense, had decent PG, good bench depth, oh and we also drafted Tmac and Carter(well jamieson but we traded right away), he picked up Keon Clark on the cheap, Mark Jackson, Dell Curry and others, does this make him a basketball God of a GM? i dont think so, and im def not calling some1 who really leaned on his dad hard in PHX one until he does more here.

yeah you can question him, kapono was signed for too much, and could arguably be a bad choice. Every GM commits mistakes, but doesnt mean that BC is not an amazing GM.

maybe you should stop for a second and remember our starting lineup when colangelo came on board:

mike james, mo pete, villanueva, Bosh and araujo

compare that with the starting lineup the next season

tj ford, parker, garbo, bosh, rasho

All this with about the same amount of cap-space you would need to sign nene for a 5 year contract ... And I'm not even talking about our bench before and after, it's like one of those reality shows, extreme bench makeover or something ...

So yeah, all in all, I'd say he did a decent job ...

i wasnt saying he is doing a horrible job, i think he is a good gm, im just saying he hasnt reached the status of savior to me like most Raptors fans feel he has, and like i said, he hasnt even surpassed the team Grunwald built imo.

then sorry the pimpery.

but your standards are ridiculously high. way too high if you ask me.

He has surpassed the team Grunwald built. by quite a bit. You see now we actually have a true "team" - with players that WANT to be here for the long haul, and i would say we are better now than we were then too.

Moreover, like Moremilk said take a good look at the team Colangelo inheritted. He's not a miracle worker, but i'd say he performed close to miracle results given the short time span that he turned things around in.

so yes... this "debate" is shocking to me.

The Pimpery's either just here to stir the pot or has unrealistic expectations. Got to be one of the two.

Give BC time fancy. Maybe he'll draft such gems on par with Chris Jeffries, Michael Bradley & Aleksander Radojevic too.

Doubt it.

Toronto was horrid 3 years ago.

BC is a good GM.

He's also managin the cap well.

One thing I'd like to mention about Grunwald, Babcock, and Isiah.

We all like to rip those guys, as if they were horrible. They all still work in the league for a reason. When they were up here, they all had to keep the MLSE happy, and the CDN Dollar was a full 35% worse at times. If you think that didn't hinder what they were able to do, you're crazy.

I like BC, but he has a par dollar and a bit more Autonamy to work with, if he doesn't get this team to the ECF in the next three years, I will say he has failed.

Grunwald did a good job, but I never liked the way he squandered draft picks. Beyond two good selections and some really bad selections, he didn't really seem to value them other than as trade assets.

yeah... Grunwald was really all about short term thinking. sometimes it's a good thing, but when a team is trying to establish a core bunch of guys, that mentalilty can be very detremental.

I liked him for the most part...
and SJ is right...who the hell knows what the directions were that the MLSE board were "forcing" him to take. His moves were very much "MLSE" inspired if you tthink about it.

damn Peddie.
