Default Lowry receives flop warning

As reported by jeff in another the NBA thread.

Quote:
The NBA issued Raptors guard Kyle Lowry a warning for flopping on Thursday.

Lowry’s flop occurred in the second quarter of Toronto’s 125-114 home victory over Philadelphia on April 9. With a little under six minutes remaining before halftime and Toronto leading 50-45, Lowry fell backwards to the court while attempting to take a charge.

Elliot Williams pushed the ball up in transition and Lowry prepared himself for contact outside the protected circle. Instead of being run down, though, Lowry slowly drifted backwards to the court because the collision never took place. Williams was able to twist his way around Lowry before laying off a pass to Thaddeus Young. No foul was called on the play.

This type of flop was specifically brought up in the NBA’s official video introducing its flopping policy. In the video, Clippers guard Chris Paul was defending a drive before he fell backwards dramatically to the ground as if he had been struck by an elbow.

“As the highlighted defensive player, No. 3 in the red uniform, defends the driving offensive player, he feels slight contact and then launches himself back to the floor,” the video’s narrator explained. “This reaction by the defensive player is an over-embellishment of marginal contact and is intended to draw an unearned offensive foul on his opponent.”

Funny thing is, he's done worse. I didn't find this that bad tbh.

This is important, since KL has built up quite a reputation on taking charges in the paint. He should make sure this doesn't happen again, especially not in the playoffs.

There was no foul called on the play, so why is the league giving a warning?

If he had drawn a foul because he flopped, then I can understand a warning.

It looks like he was thinking to draw a foul, but wasn't certain and when he saw the knee coming at his chest, he probably thought he was going to get the knee and a blocking foul, so his reaction was to fall backward and avoid both the knee and the blocking call. Looks more like a play on.

I'm not sure if he was being terribly dramatic. I'm guessing he didn't really want to absorb the contact, and may have even been told not to at this point in the season, but Kyle being Kyle, couldn't keep himself from trying to get the call without taking the contact.

Giving Lowry the warning is the proper thing to do. Accept it and move on.

Players get warnings after they've been given their first infraction for flopping, then if they receive another infraction, they receive a 5K fine, so this must have been Lowrys first infraction for flopping.

I wonder how many flop infractions that Lebron, Wade, and Fisher have been given. Probably none, despite them being the worst, most active floppers.

I believe when Lebron got fined it was in the playoffs when him and David West acted like they had both been shot at point blank range with a 12-gauge. That was the only time he ever got called out for it, but I'll put money on it that Lebron will never get called for flopping a second time.

I agree with Ball Don't Lie that guys like Lebron, Wade, Fisher, etc are hardly ever called for flopping with some of them never getting called for it. The league is so one sided with these flopping warnings/fines that it's so painfully obvious they favor their "superstar" players.

Lowry flops more than Lebron but not as much as Durant.

Harden's at the top of the floppy game which shouldn't surprise anybody since he's from the OKC School of Floppy.

I picture Scott Brooks standing at the free throw line, and having his guards drive at him in succession each time flailing their arms in the air, practising their flops as Brooks nods in approvement.

there doesnt have to be a foul called for the nba to give you a warning.
and the nba has handed out warning and fines to star players as well.
Lowry flopped, he got a warning, this is just a rule in the NBA its no big deal.

i love that the nba shows video of player flopping, so you cant really debate it. transparency like that is excellent.

There hasn't been nearly enough warnings or fines imo. Oh and what happened to the delay of game when an offensive player touches the ball after a made FG? It constantly happens and rarely gets called like they said it would. I thought the rule was kind of stupid anyway but they stopped enforcing it by the looks of it.

I agree - there are so many obvious and ridiculous flops that don't get fined so I'm not quite sure how they pick and choose. Chris Paul would be making Dwight Buycks type of money if he was fined for even half of his flops.

The delay of game rule was a temporary emphasis to curb player habits. I don't think they ever intended to keep calling it, especially getting deeper into the year when the games start to take on more significance.
