Lowry: I couldn't choose a better team or teammates

Toronto Raptors’ unexpected success owed in large part to Kyle Lowry’s magnificent season

Quote:

If there are 32 [seconds remaining] and Im over halfcourt, then Im going to do it. Usually if there are 35 or more, I think I can do it, Lowry says, describing his frequent strategy, called the two-for-one in basketball jargon. Once [the clock] gets to 28, 29, you kind of back off it a little bit.I learned it from watching Chauncey Billups. When you go back and watch him, he always took the two-for-one three. Its one of those things that when youre confident in your game and its a shot that youve worked on, you take it. Its better to try get a quick three off of it than something bad happening if you try to drive the lane. Thats my thinking. I think Im going to make it every time.

Many outsiders have noted that Lowry, identified as a problematic influence on his teammates by so many coaches and reporters, is at the end of his contract and looking for a fatter new one after the season. Lowry is keenly aware of context, so it is tough to deny that it has played a part in his lighter touch with the coaching staff and media this season. However, beware of the too-simple explanation.

You know, Ive heard of that, said Chuck Hayes, Lowrys teammate in Houston and Toronto, when asked of the perception that surrounds Lowry. But Ive never seen it. The talent is not in question, and its more than his attitude or whatnot. But I dont think he has a [bad] attitude. If you know the man, if you know his background and where he comes from, you can appreciate his competitiveness. You can appreciate his personality. I really believe its just an allergic reaction: One day he rubbed somebody the wrong way, and it spread like a virus.
Quote:

"I said it last year when I did my [introductory] press conference: I wanted to get this team to the playoffs. I did that. We won the division while we were at it, Lowry said. Were going to the playoffs. I got better while helping my team. Its not about the individual. Its about the team goals and the team concepts.

This year I dont know the word Im looking for. We have the representation of a full team.Ive never had a perfect picture [in my head] of the team I want to be on. You cant do that. I couldnt choose a better team and the teammates than what Ive got here.

I'm just hoping he stays :yeah:

Tear in my eyes :)

I hope Masai and Lowry can come to a common agreement this summer. Maybe Lowry would give us a discount to help the team progress?

Yeah right, Lowry's agent is licking his lips because he's gotta get paid too.

Match made in heaven then.

This is the best part of it.

Nice to know his two fer strategy because sometimes I wondered why he chucks up the 3 himself.

Kyle does the two for one at least once a game lol, I wonder what his percentage for those are cause he always seems to make them :D

well he's arguably the best, if not second best 3 pt shooter on the team, even with them, so I don't mind it if he does take them.

Actually he has made few lately, but earlier he almost never made them. I remember asking what the idea is at somepoint when he had missed several of those in row.

"hoping Rudy-G will save the season" - he did - by being dealt.

He's been great in this contract year and I want him back as long as he's paid fairly and not over his worth(anything more than 10+ on average per year).

I'm in the minority of thinking though that if he leaves the Raptors won't be totally doomed. I've liked what Vasquez has done as a starter and obviously he won't replace/duplicate what Lowry has but he would come a lot cheaper for a PG who would be effective enough to get this team back to the playoffs next season. Also, there is a lot of young PG prospects in the up coming draft and I believe the Raps could be in position to draft one of Smart,Ennis or Napier(assuming Exum is the first one selected),based on the selecting teams(ahead of Toronto)needs.

Smart will be long gone once the raps draft their man.

More than likely but there are some alternatives. Raptors could trade up.

Smart is probably going to be top 5-7. To trade up to get him would be near impossible and a waste of time.

After his par season and off court concerns,do you think that's enough to keep him out of the top 10,if he doesn't have impressive pre draft workouts? In that scenario is where I could see him being available for the Raps if they were to trade up.

MBailey85 04-14-2014 07:35 PM

Lowry has been sensational though and you can't put a price tag on his leadership.

Idk it's a stretch. I highly doubt he drops out of the top 10. Orlando for example if could take him or Exum and become near beastly in the future.

Of course. Best player on the squad. Godly #s this year.

Ball Don't Lie 04-14-2014 07:54 PM

I think it's key that we keep Vasquez, or a solid backup PG to ensure that Lowry isn't playing crazy minutes every game of the entire season, and also to keep him off of the ball for parts of the game so he's not consistently handling the ball and wearing himself out game to game. I think that's been huge in keeping Lowry healthy this year, plus I haven't seen Lowry trying to get as many rebounds versus big guys in tight quarters this year, which has limited his ankle injuries.

LX 04-14-2014 08:00 PM

Yeah - with Vasquez, as much as letting lowry sit is good, being able to play with him and let him play off the ball is huge.

Tommy C 04-15-2014 01:29 AM

I have a feeling Vasquez wants to be a starter. I am not sure if he sees himself as backup in the future.
