Default Lowry already establishing himself as a vocal leader?

We do know that Kyle Lowry is emerging as perhaps the most vocal on-court these guys have had in years and he’s more than willing to let his teammates know when things go awry.

“You just be yourself, you don’t do anything you’re not accustomed to doing, you go out there and be yourself,” he said. “If you’re yourself, people are going to respect you … you’re not trying to do anything extra.”

And doing it in the right way is the only way to go about it. No teammate likes to be chewed out, no matter how briefly or how legitimately and if Lowry is to continue down this road, he’d better learn quickly who he can push and who he has to cajole.

It’s hard reading personalities, he doesn’t have an awful lot of experience with this group and it’s a rather dodgy proposition.

“Kyle does it in a respectful way, and that’s what’s important,” was how Casey put it. “You have to treat your teammates with respect but he does hold guys accountable. That way I don’t lose my voice."

Basketball teams, any sports team for that matter, are delicate ecosystems; Lowry’s got a tough job ahead of him and I wonder if his personality is such that he can delivered hard messages softly, if need be.

A day into Toronto Raptors training camp and Kyle Lowry is already barking at his teammates.

And as his friend, mentor and former Raptors point guard Alvin Williams tells it, they haven't heard anything yet.

It's the part of his personality that attracted the Raptors when they acquired Lowry in the off-season, a measure of toughness coupled with sky-high confidence not recently seen around the Air Canada Centre.

The point guard, who could supplant Jose Calderon in the starting spot, isn't yet in full voice as he adjusts to a new team. But Williams said it's only a matter of time.

"Jose, when he's been running the show, is a very good point guard, so Kyle has to find his way in," Williams said on Day 1 of Raptors training camp at the Canada Games Centre. "He'll pick and choose when to push people and when not to push people.

"In enough time, he'll be in everyone's faces."

Sounds wonderful. Can he hold Colangelo accountable as well?

One of my biggest concerns going into this season was that Casey would be doing double duty as both coach and leader. I really thought it would be nice to have a solid, experienced vet to help on the court in that respect, but I also thought Lowry would fill some of that void, and it looks like he might be able to fill more of it than I hoped. It would still be good to have another guy that can back him up, so that he doesn't have to "deliver hard messages softly", but just continue to be himself and let someone else come at it from another angle if need be.

If I'm the coach and GM, I would look at how different players work with this guy, and make decisions based on that to a great extent. Lowry is a core piece. Now who will be joining him in that core group? This kind of a leader can really help bring some clarity to shaping this team. And that is precisely what made me so happy about him coming here.
