Raptors Looks like the Raps won't do much if anything by March 15

Raptors decline offers for Jose Calderon and Leandro Barbosa | Scoop Du Jour - Yahoo! Sports

Quote:
The NBA trade deadline is coming March 15 and the 10-24 Toronto Raptors, who have the fourth-worst record in the league, have already had a "multitude of offers" for point guard Jose Calderon and guard Leandro Barbosa.

However, the team has said no to everything so far, according to the Toronto Sun. The paper also notes that "Raptors president/general manager Bryan Colangelo has said in the past that he is interested in extended Barbosa, who will be unrestricted this season."

If Barbosa does get dealt, though, sources tell the paper that it could be in an "extend-and-trade scenario."

Meanwhile, the Sun reports that even though the Raptors would love to have swingman Wilson Chandler on the roster, it isn't likely that the team will make an offer to the restricted free agent before the Thursday deadline because Toronto doesn't "have the cap space to submit an offer Denver would not match."

Sources tell the paper that "Toronto has balked at Chandler's asking price, but has not completely closed the door if he becomes unrestricted and is willing to accept less money."

I wouldn't worry too much. The article notes that Barbosa may be moved in an extend-and-trade, which would have to be before the deadline, and says nothing about not trading Calderon. Just says that the offers haven't been good enough yet - which makes sense, as offers tend to get a lot better closer to the deadline.

The only part that could worry me is wanting to extend Barbosa, but it seems like they are working off of something BC said "in the past," which is just repeating the same stuff from this summer, so a lot could have changed since then.

BC can't get any worse than I already think he is...unless he doesn't make a move. But it wouldn't surprise me at all. Keep living off your PHX rep and stealing money bro.

Let's wait for March 16th, shall we? I still maintain that Jose will stay past the trade deadline; however, both he and Barbosa and anyone else on the roster not named Andrea could be dealt if a great offer comes along.

If no deals happen, that's because the offers weren't that good. Thrills, you wouldn't want BC is just deal for the sake of helping another team, now would you?

How about offering Chandler one year 4.3M contract? If Denver matches that wouldn't Chandler become unrestricted FA next year?
I doubt WC could get more money for playing two months anywhere else
And its in his interest to sign with Raps because in Denver there is no starting minutes for him

How I wish that we could have some insight into what some of these "rejected deals" actually were....

AFAIK, you can't offer an RFA a contract shorter than 2 years.

My guess is we'd have to take back salary. At least for Jose, and for barbosa since he expires in a couple months we aren't great offers there either.

there's usually nothing going on in the entire nba, this isn't hockey here, the trades in the entire league can usually be counted on 1 hand and they're usually insignificant ones

On one hand? Slight exaggeration there. And from everything i've heard the last couple years the NHL trade deadline days have been pretty insignificant for the most part.

R.Butler to indiana for a conditional 2nd rounder (top 59 protected), if raps do not receive the pick, indiana will send the Raptors 1 cent american.

Not too sure what you're talking about, but while this year was relatively quiet, there was a record 31 trades and 55 players moved last year and roughly 25 trades or so per deadline for the 6 seasons prior to last.

I think nobody's gonna do much of anything before the trade deadline.
I think teams are just gonna be happy getting through this hellaciously scheduled strike year.

yeah, but how many of them were actually significant trades
i couldn't care less about 2 teams trading their backup goalies or 3rd-4th line centers

besides, in the nba there isn't as much of this buyers and sellers idea where if you're in the playoffs you're a buyer and if you're out of the playoffs you're a seller, teams don't just trade away significant players in the nba to other teams in the playoff hunt to stock up for the future, mainly because in the nba your rotation is like 8 to 10 players with a starting five that gets the majority of the minutes, so there's no point in "stocking up" on players when most of them won't play, in the nhl you have 2 to 3 forward line and 2 or 3 defensive pairs that spread out the minutes, you need skilled players on all lines
and in basketball the superstars are worth way more than hockey as 1 guy can take over the game, no matter how bad a team is doing they're not going to trade away their go to guys because they're hard to come by, in the nhl you can have crosby on your team but in the end his value is probably no different than having 2 stars on a team that are slightly less valuable

2 years ago not this year .

15 this year, 16 last year, 31 before that, and 25 for a long time before that :P
