Let's turn Raptors into an International franchise

Since all-star American players dump us once they become a celebrity and/or when they complete their contract in Toronto, why not build a team that won't consist of any American star player?

What other place can be more suitable to build an International franchise than Toronto whose habitants are of 142 different nationalities? We can add American role-players to complete the team. Since they are not the key pieces, we'd not mind trading them or when they leave we'd not lose power.

Roster would be something like this:

PG: Calderon
SG: Parker
SF: Turkoglu
PF: Nowitzki
C: Bargnani

Subs: Delfino, Ukic, Graham, Moon, Kapono, Humphries, (backup center).

We trade Bosh for Nowitzki, JO for Marion then release Marion and sign Turkoglu in the summer. Sign Delfino and sign a backup center.

If we can't get Nowitzki then trade Bosh+Kapono for Okur+Korver+Brewer.

What reason would this players have to go to Toronto when they are in contenders like Utah and Orlando.

Let's take it one step further and go all-canadian.

That's what my dad thinks they should do.

While i think it's unrealistic to get all the best international players currently playng in the NBA, i would very much like us to target non American players. Colangelo looked to be doing that when he first started here. I've always thought it was a good idea and i'd like it if the team were more devoted to that direction.

I've argued this point now for about a year. It makes complete sense imo.

Who cares about the current generation, but good scouting in Europe and abroad would do more good to this franchise than negative. If this team could become a destination, top foreign players want to play for then I'm all for it. Not only does it grow the team globally, but it will in essence grow the team's fan base as well, equating to more revenue for MLSE.

We've heard for years that American born players don't like coming to Canada. Fine, bring in the best foreign players. Expose that market. Have THOSE players say, I don't want to play in the U.S. I want to play in Toronto. Yes, it will take some time to get to that level, but long term it has it benefits. And if you form a competitive team, then eventually American born players (top players) would want to sign.

Quit only searching one portion of the globe for players (US). Begin searching globally where a greater talent pool exists.

As for brining in current international stars in the NBA? No. Many are in great situations. We need to target the youth.

I think that's what Colengelo paid for not to trade a bad knee for 21 million.

I hear that Orlando may not be able to sign Turkoglu because of their stupidity of trading Lewis and sign Pietrus to a bulky contract in the past. Hedo is a down to earth guy and would not mind playing for Toronto. Though there is a big advantage playing in Florida where there is no income tax.

I don't think Utah will let Okur go but if they think they can make the playoffs this year and we offer them Bosh, they won't risk Okur signing elsewhere in the summer. As I said that is an option if we can't deal Bosh for Nowitzki. Nowitzki is also another team player like Hedo. You won't see him complaining playing for Raptors or getting booed which I'm sure will never happen for him. Look at the German national team and what he has done to help team over the years. He even offered to pay his own insurance to play for them.

1. Isn't Turk like 30 years old this year? You want to break the bank for him? He's a solid player and all, but he's gonna want a boatload of money. I wouldn't want to give him that money.
2. I think Okur is a FA this year.
3. Bargs and Nowitzki on the same team? That's kinda redundant, no? I don't think Cuban does a Bosh for Nowitzki deal. He's going to want to have both.

Possibly Bonner at the 3. I mean, he's pretty much an honorary Canadian.

We could add Denham Brown, Andy Rautins, Olu Famutimi and Juan Mendez.

I add also add Canada's own version of Garbo -Jesse Young.

I played against Jesse Young 4,5 years ago at UofG.

Didn't know who he was at the time. It was just some random day in the summer.

Big difference between guys like him who end up having a career in Europe and with the National team, and guys who go to a mediocre college in the states, and end up leaving basketball shortly afterwards with maybe a sniff at pro-ball somewhere.

Jesse Young didn't give a shit that some of the guys playing were just some pick up ballers with no rep. He still played his ass off and lost himself in the game. No ego. It's the same for all good local basketball players I've played against who have had success at the pro level.

Apparently he really likes his mushrooms as well, so I've heard through a friend of a friend.
