Koreen: Will Triano be back?

Quote:

"I think the one thing about the NBA is that with draft picks and free agency, the face of a team can change drastically," Triano said. "This year, we developed players so that when the face of the franchise changes drastically, the role players will be significantly better. There are going to be exciting times around here."

Triano is selling hope, but that does not mean he is lying. DeMar DeRozan has improved dramatically this year, with his jumpshot no longer denting rims. Ed Davis has shown that spending the 13th pick on a lithe power forward, despite already having Amir Johnson, was wise. When young players develop, coaching has to get some of the credit.

Almost as importantly, the team has gotten along. Aside from a few minor issues -Julian Wright refusing to go into a game in Golden State last month stands out -the Raptors have been a cohesive unit. Given the mounting losses, that is an accomplishment.

"For the one-off incident that did happen, it is so minor to the other s---that goes on around this league," Triano said, answering in the affirmative when asked if there were at least five incidents on last year's team that would have been worse than Wright's refusal to play. There were likely more involving Hedo Turkoglu alone.

"I think that [Triano's] work ethic, his professionalism and his positive demeanour, which is the hardest thing to maintain, is what has kept us going more than anything else," assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "And the players understand that. They know that every day he's prepared.

"It's no different now than it was in game five. And [the players] see that. And that's not the way it is everywhere, to be honest with you. Some coaches aren't that way. They don't mail it in, but they don't bring that same energy."

There can be little dispute that the Raptors played for Triano this year, even though their playoff hopes were squashed early. There were wins over Boston, Oklahoma City (twice), Orlando (twice) Chicago and Dallas. Beyond that, there were few no-shows, with the game against the Warriors that Wright tarnished standing out as one of the few exceptions. Most of the losses were of the simple we-areovermatched variety. And as everybody on the club is fond of pointing out, there were lingering injuries to nearly every member of the rotation, with a serious foot injury keeping Reggie Evans in a suit for more than three months.

Quote:

In terms of in-game adjustments, Triano showed his chops in a March win in Oklahoma City, drawing up intricate plays -executed well -that led to the tying and winning baskets. Overall, he has thrown everything, including a healthy helping of zone defence, at the wall. Triano declined to get into specifics but said one area he did want to improve at was related to x's and o's.

"The number one thing is the players like him and respect him," Carlesimo said. "That's absolutely number one. When you have that -the confidence of your players -and they like [you] and want to play well for you, then you can push through situations like this, when there's not the carrot there."

Without the necessary talent, you cannot judge Triano on much else.

what i've been saying all along

He will most likely be back next season. If we get a high draft pick this off-season and some trades go down, yet are still at the bottom of the league.. then he will be fired. But if he gets us to 40+ wins he'll probably stay.

It's funny you think this team should win 40+ next year..... If they win 30-35 it would be good growth. Young teams and players take time....

I fuckin love when Triano swears... s---...

RAPMAN 04-06-2011 12:15 PM

With Triano back, we'll be back for high pick in the stacked 2012 draft. A top 2 pick next year we net you a real franchise player. The only drawback, Derozan will have 3 years, Ed Davis will have 2 years in a losing atmosphere and where defense is non-existent.

We could only hope to be a 40+ win team next year. Collangelo did it before though. Ofcourse we were a team of white europeans at the time.

On the 47 win team, three of the four top players were Americans (Bosh, TJ Ford, Parker).

Cool to hear the support from Carlesimo. This season has been pretty even keel as opposed to last season. I just hope that's is due to improved skills more than Hedo not being around. Certainly it must have been a challenge to keep some focus with so much losing.

I wouldn't mind having Triano here as head coach or assistant if we get a new head coach. The players respect him and listen to him, that's what you want for a team. The team seems cohesive and plus both the players and coaches are still learning, minus maybe PJ; he as some experience. He has preached defense and we've seen it in games but not consistently. With the offseason coming and draft days, I wonder how this team will look and how Triano will run this team. Plus I want our team to be healthy come the new season.

What is your point. Were the majority of the players international flavours???
Besides parker flourishing in the euroleague.

I was not a fan of the euro-team. But i am liking what Collangelo and Triano have been doing thus far. They are making steps in the right direction.

Ive said it before

Coaching is not a problem on this team ... Talent is... And the young talent here and the development shown this season should give Triano another shot next year...

Funny how people here look at his performance

The players refuse to play defence
One of the youngest teams in the NBA
Injury season leading to i think a NBA leading record of starting lineup changes

Yet wins over the likes of OKC twice, Orlando twice, Dallas and chicago etc there is no love or praise to the coaching staff

However Blowout losses like GS are all on Triano...

Fantastic logic

I'm a bit skeptical with Euro players, especially being burned with Bargnani. Those European players on that 47-win team, were role players (Rasho, Garbo, Jose). I kinda like players playing in high school and college in the US. The best Canadian players now go to high school in the states. Its were the best play the best. Its were the cream of the crop rise above the best competition. Hey, the Raps didn't do that bad the last two drafts.

Some Triano feedback today with John Hollinger:

Kyle (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada!)

John,What's your opinion of the Raptors resigning of Bryan Colangelo? A lot of people are upset at the fact he got resigned when he didn't do much for the team during his tenure. But if we didn't resign him, I don't think there would be anyone else you could sign as a replacement that would be an improvement.

John Hollinger (1:08 PM)

I'm lukewarm. BC has built enough of a track record that you can offset it against his mistakes of the last two years. I would like it if he replaced Triano, though; he's a good guy and knows Xs and Os, but the evidence is overwhelming that he never got his guys to play hard enough.

Last season, sure. Before that i can judge all i want. Fact is, last season wasn't his first season as head coach. And he's been a disaster for three seasons and it isn't just the players, not by a long shot. That being said, Give him another season and let him sink or swim. Fuck it!

Without so many injuries, it's not a stretch to say they likely win 30 games this season. The right moves could put us in the 35-40 range imo.

RAPMAN 05-19-2011 02:08 PM

BC has a two-year window. If the Raps pull another 20 win or 30 win season, BC will be gone. BC has always supported Triano. But does he have enough belief in Triano with own his job on the line.

He should be on an extremely short leash going into the season imo. The problem with that is, if he fires him 30 games into the season then what? If i were BC i'd want to get an experienced hard nosed defensive HC in here and get things on track quickly, which i wish he'd do but i have a bad feeling Triano will be back just to be let go during the season or next summer which imo wastes time beacuse BC then goes into his last guaranteed season with a new coach and uncertainty.

Gotta to agree with you. I think the Raps retain Triano because he has the support of his players. I think the Raps need a no non-sense defensive-minded coach. Hollinger was right that the Rap players don't "play hard," but I think it is on the defensive end.

Lack of accountability and discipline imo, and that speaks to coaching. Now obviously i'm bias since i really dislike Triano as a coach and predicted him failing from the begining, but i just think we need an unpgrade, and need more intensity and accountability at the defensive end.
