Koreen: Raptors need to deal to improve

Quote:

The trade avenue might be the most important for Colangelo and the Raptors, although it must be stated that making trades is a lot easier to do in baseball than in basketball thanks to the absence of a salary cap. The Raptors are poised to have four young front-court players — age 27 or under — locked into contracts: Andrea Bargnani, Ed Davis, Amir Johnson and the incoming Jonas Valanciunas. Davis, because of his rookie contract, would be the easiest to move. However, it is easy to see a scenario where any of those players, save for Valanciunas, gets moved.

The nature of this draft increases the likelihood that Colangelo will have to be active on the phones. There are no upper-echelon point-guard prospects, a select few potential swingmen, and a whole lot of big men at or near the top of most draft boards: Anthony Davis, Thomas Robinson, Andre Drummond, Jared Sullinger and Perry Jones, to start. Colangelo has said that this roster is still not good enough to draft for need over talent, so Colangelo selecting a forward is very possible.

Colangelo also is due to make a splashy trade. The last time he made a trade was last month, when he dealt Leandro Barbosa for a second-round pick at the trade deadline. The last time he swapped a rotation player for a rotation player was November 2010, when he moved Jarrett Jack for Jerryd Bayless. His biggest deal, or near deal, in the last two years — Jose Calderon and Reggie Evans to Charlotte for Tyson Chandler and Boris Diaw — was vetoed by Bobcats owner Michael Jordan.

If you want to go back to the last time Colangelo moved a starter for a starter — not including sign-and-trade moves caused by free agency, such as the move that sent Shawn Marion to Dallas and brought Hedo Turkoglu from Orlando to Toronto — you have to go back to February 2009, when Colangelo acquired Marion for Jermaine O’Neal.

The prolonged absence of a meaningful trade is funny, considering Colangelo’s first big move as the Raptors’ general manager was acquiring T.J. Ford from Milwaukee for Charlie Villanueva, a move made easier because the Raptors had just won the draft lottery. Colangelo selected Andrea Bargnani with that No. 1 pick, allowing him to move Villanueva. The Raptors needed a point guard, and used a surplus at another spot to address that. It was the type of need-for-need deal that has not happened in a while here. You can see it happening in the near future, though.

Since Chris Bosh left in free agency in July 2010, Colangelo, as he says, has been collecting assets. This summer, he gets to switch from that to team-building mode, something that requires a much defter touch. If you think that will be done entirely through the draft and free agency, prepare to be mistaken.

Ironic, we started winning since Butler and Barbosa were gone. Even more winning when and Bayless got injured.

pretty much a no brainer...he's right.

TORaptor4Ever 04-05-2012 01:20 PM

Time to earn your money this summer BC.... or GTFO.

Superjudge 04-05-2012 01:32 PM

not sure there are many that would do ay better up here. tough place to operate.... but really, lets not have this discussion again.

This is what I'm expecting. Can't just rely on improving through the draft.

We need big traddes

MrClutch 04-05-2012 04:28 PM

we need to get paul george asap

Dario 04-05-2012 04:32 PM

I dont think PG wants to come to Toronto. Just judging by what happened last couple games

Aamir 04-05-2012 10:24 PM

Well it should be a fact that one of those big-men are out of here by next season. Also have an Aaron Gray we can keep around if BC pleases.

if BC had any guts (and patience), the year to make splashy moves is the next one
we're still far from having a good core in place, we would need at least one extra draft to fill more holes. If we load up this summer with middling guys like chandler (7-10 range), with JV and the draft pick, we'll probably be good enough to even make the playoffs next summer. And with that core, we'll never get to 50 wins, which means we'll go through the 2006-2010 cycle all over again.

RaptorsFan4Life 04-06-2012 12:27 AM

We don't have to. We can outbid people for Dragic and get a backup SG from free agency.

jeffb 04-06-2012 12:36 AM

Ideally you make a trade that doesn't eat into your capspace too much, then make a splash in FA and also add some bench depth with that capspace/amnesty. Let's face it, for us to get a lot better we'll need to add both through trade and free agency, not to mention adding a solid player at the draft.

Ya, I think we need to move Ed for a draft pick this coming year. We don't have a choice. If we don't we're going to have too many PF that need min.

Pick up nash and trade ed davis for mid to late 1st round and pick up quincy miller. Pick up Jae Crowder and orlando johnson with 2nd round picks and we have a pretty descent team if we draft either barnes/MKG/beal with our pick.

Trade Calderon and TPE for Gortat.

Amnesty amir
pick up Stan Van Gundy :cookie:

nash/bayless

derozan/orlando johnson

(barnes/MKG/Beal)/JJ/Kleiza

Bargs/Miller/Crowder

Gortat/JV/Gray

Defence- Casey
Offence- SVG

That team would make the playoffs :dancing:

neojiphre 04-06-2012 03:11 AM

Quincy miller is probably a lotto pick

Who exactly are our tradable players? The only ones who other franchises could be interested in are only Bargnani and Calderon

Obi-Wan Quinnobi 04-06-2012 03:33 AM

Quincy miller has dropped hardcore on draftexpress and i would trust them
