Raptors Koreen: Raps should consider trading Demar

Quote:
Accordingly, it is probably safe to start thinking about next year, and who might be around to help the Raptors end their post-season exile. Looking at the roster, the players break down into five distinct groups.
Quote:
Will definitely* be with the Raptors: Jonas Valanciunas, Rudy Gay
Valanciunas is the safest bet. He is on a rookie-scale contract for three more seasons, is coming along nicely on the defensive end and is a potential franchise centre. Giving up on him after one season would be one of the most bizarre moves in franchise history. Not far behind that would be giving up on Gay, acquired at the end of January, as the centrepiece of the team’s offence.
Quote:
Will likely be with the Raptors: Amir Johnson, Kyle Lowry, Landry Fields, Terrence Ross
All four will probably be back — for different reasons, too. Johnson has two years worth about US$13-million left on his contract following this season, and advanced statistics, primarily on the defensive end, say he is undervalued. The Raptors hold him in high regard, and it is hard to imagine how the Raptors could turn somebody at that price into higher value via a trade.
Quote:
Might be with the Raptors: Aaron Gray, John Lucas, Quincy Acy, DeMar DeRozan
Gray, Lucas and Acy all have small guaranteed contracts for next season. It is easy to see them being on the roster, or being salary fodder in a bigger trade.

DeRozan’s is the most uncertain case on the roster. On the one hand, he has quieted concerns about his ability to play alongside Gay — he averaged close to 20 points per game, getting to the free-throw line 7.5 times per game in 12 contests in February playing with Gay.

However, what was said at the time of the trade still stands: Both Gay and DeRozan cannot consistently hit the three-point shot, defend at a high level or create for others.
Quote:
Unlikely to be with the Raptors: Andrea Bargnani, Linas Kleiza
The only thing that will keep Bargnani with the Raptors after his nightmare season is the same thing that has him still here: His value is at a nadir, and moving his contract, worth US$23-million over the next two years, has proven to be difficult. The Raptors will likely use the amnesty clause on Kleiza, unless they keep his US$4.6-million salary on the books to include in a trade.
Quote:
Will definitely* not be with the Raptors: Sebastian Telfair, Alan Anderson, Mickael Pietrus
Of the three, only Anderson plays regularly. But it is hard to see a role for any of these players — all of whom are heading for free agency — on next year’s team.

As for the man in charge of putting together the roster, Bryan Colangelo, and the man in charge of deploying it, Dwane Casey, both find themselves on precarious footing. But those are matters for another day.

However, what was said at the time of the trade still stands: Both Gay and DeRozan cannot consistently hit the three-point shot, defend at a high level or create for others.

More to the point, DeRozan is one of the Raptors’ more intriguing trade assets. There are not many productive, young shooting guards in the league. The four-year, US$38-million contract extension DeRozan signed this off-season thus become a reasonable investment. The Raptors owe it to themselves to see if other teams agree.

not impossible - the question is what can DD be dealt for? + If he leaves what happens at SG - entrust TR and bring back AA?

DeRozan is the heart of this team along with amir... no way I want him to leave after putting effort every year to improve

fair enough but a lot of faith, trust, etc has been put into TR. TR over Drummond and TR over ED.

i feel like the next big step we'll see in demar's game will be his defence next season. kid has shown to work on his weaknesses. if he can even be an average-slightly good defender on the perimiter no need to get rid of him. oh and gay can definitely create for others when he wants to. a coach with more accountability will bring that side of gay out. 3 pt shooting gay will hopefully go back to career levels next season and demar has improved season per season, although slowly. don't forget lowry is an excellent outside shooter and is a starter for us.

I don't see a need to move demar, for I don't see him bringing back anyone to make this team better without him than it is with him. simple.

We havn't even seen his best yet - I think it's safe to say we don't quite know how good he can be. I think he's proved he's worth 10MM - but his character might push him to be worth much more than that.

Trading him would be foolish at this point.

And people need to watch the work Demar puts in playing off the ball defense. It's night and day from even 4 months ago. He's improved quite a bit on that end.

Depends what it would be for. What's foolish is thinking Derozan is untradeable.

A lot of faith and trust has been put into both DD and TR. DD's extension and giving him all the minutes he can handle. TR being picked over Drummond and being dealt instead of ED. However, that other starting big isn't going to come out of nowhere.

At this point in time I would trade Bargs and Ross for Ed back... We need a starter and Ross has been disappointing me but I want a new coach aswell, keep casey but just for defence

Derozan in a package (w/Bargs?) for Milsap (s&t) and Hayward would be interesting.

We need more shooting + a starting caliber PF. Not sure how you get both without including Derozan in a deal.

They wouldn't want Bargs (salary reasons). They might do Ross as that is who they wanted originally. However, they might just hold on to ED as he is Zach insurance.

Ross's minutes have been all over the place and has been mishandled by DC imo and he's in his rookie year. Giving up on his so quick i think would be stupid. He brings defense, shooting ability and has the potential to be a good all around player.

That's a lot of salary going back to Utah (if it is Bargs + DD for Millsap and Hayward). + If they're getting rid of Millsap that basically ensures they're keeping Big Al. So, big Al, Favors and Kanter. A lot of money for a 4th big in Bargs. DD for Millsap straight up isn't bad.

Yeah, getting rid of Ross so quick would be like what SAK weirdly did to T.Robinson.

I think DeRozan's ability to post up and get to the line is being undervalued. Can't find many SG'S in the league that do those things better than him. For those reasons on the offensive end alone,is why they should keep him.

Eric Smith brought up this topic last month after the Gay trade.
He said that if Ross becomes the player they hope, he DD might be traded, and since his value his fairly high, I won't be surprised.

Ross has so far shown nothing that he's capable of starting, so any DD trade would have to bring back a starting caliber SG.
