Default Koreen: Lowry the best shot against better teams

Kyle Lowry is the Toronto Raptors’ best shot against better teams | NBA | Sports | National Post

Quote:
“We’re not worried about Kyle,” Anderson started. “Kyle is a bull. He’s just … Kyle is … you know, you can’t … It’s hard to describe Kyle if you don’t know him. He’s Kyle, but he’s like one of those, just, I’m trying to think what kind of bull is he. Kyle is like a … not a Chicago Bull. I don’t know. Kyle is one of the guys that is just mad aggressive at every time. At any given time, he can just erupt. Defensively, offensively, assist-wise, rebounding. When Kyle plays like that, we’re really, really tough. Really tough.”

That, in a roundabout way, pretty much covers it. More to the point: Lowry is the Raptors’ best chance against elite opponents, as he is their only potentially elite offensive player at this point in his NBA career.

The Raptors, predictably, have struggled against quality opponents this year. They are 3-18 against teams that entered Thursday’s play above .500, and two of those wins — at home against Portland and Houston — came against teams that are barely on the happy side of the ledger.

Against the Bulls, it looked to be more of the same. Chicago was executing offensively, and the Raptors trailed by 19 points in the third quarter. Lowry, with help from his bench mates Anderson and Quincy Acy, changed the game. The Raptors went on a 16-3 run to end the third quarter, and he kept them in the game in the fourth quarter in a tense situation. Lowry went 4-for-8 for 14 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including two fearless drives — one in the last minute of regulation and one in the last minute of the fourth quarter.

Those were the type of plays that were missing Sunday afternoon against Milwaukee. The Raptors, with Jose Calderon at the helm, ran continuous pick-and-rolls, Milwaukee switched with frequency, and good looks were few and far between. Calderon is a tremendous leader and point guard, but his style of play can be powerless against a team full of long, talented big men that can disrupt the pick-and-roll. You need a player with Lowry’s type of individual talent to space the floor late in games. So long as he can make the right decisions — and that is forever the concern with Lowry — he makes life easier for everyone on his team.

“I told him in there a few minutes ago I was proud of him, the way he competed, made the right basketball decisions, scored when he had to, gave it up when he had to,” Raptors coach Dwane Casey said after the game.

Finally, there seem to be no more concerns with how Lowry is playing. There will be ugly games, surely. Over the last two games, his tentativeness is gone, even despite an ankle he described as “very sore.” Against the Nets and the Bulls, Lowry has scored 47 points on 59% shooting from the floor in 49 minutes of action. And this is why the Raptors acquired him in the first place: to be the team’s puncher’s chance at beating opponents who are, man for man, more talented than they are. The Raptors are trying to transition from league doormat to a playoff contender. When Lowry is playing like this, the process makes a lot more sense.

Sooner than later KL should be back in the starting 5 as he is playing more like he did at the start of the season, only now with an increase in decision making and in chemistry that has been developing with the other players. JC, as much as I like him (and defended him since he came in the league), has peaked, just can't defend at all and is offensively predictable.

He'll be too expensive as a back-up imo, trade or let him walk.

And Demar is ready for Kyle- it may be the only way that Demar can get some life back in his game.

He's nowhere with Calderon's style of play.

I don't necessarily agree, they both had good and bad games against good teams. They're very different players and a lot more depends on what type of team we're facing, what kind of defense they have and what kind of PG. Against a quick PG, jose is toast, against a team that packs the paint and has good shot blocking, lowry usually struggles more than jose.

Strictly looking at them as players, lowry is flat out better, against any kind of team though.

Lowry is going to leave the first chance he gets with the way we've handled the situation. As well as they've played with Jose, he should have been moved so the franchise can move on already. On top of this, Jose will probably leave anyways for a better team as a backup PG.

It's really amazing this controversy in retrospect. We gave up a high lottery pick for Lowry. We should have said he's the starter and run with it. This entire organization just dithers around with no direction.

All you have to do is re-watch the domination Westbrook had over Jose to know this to be true.

That being said, Lowry has to earn it - outplaying Jose one out of every 4,5 games doesn't earn it.

It's a tough decision.

Maybe JL3 should be starting.

Jose leaves this summer. Kyle leaves when he can. And John Lucas becomes our #1 PG

After reading this I had to take some Tums... Jose just doesn't get the guys moving, he is ultra conservative with his passes and loathe to take the shot...he does not want to be the one to take the game breaker while KL will always shoulder the role. I admire Jose skills but I also know he is not the chosen one. Maybe he can take his talents to South Beach...

his shot aggresiveness has gotten much better this season, and his pushing the ball up the court too. defence still non existent though, and that's not his fault. lowry is just straight up better though

It's kind of like a bad movie that plays over and over every time we either win a few games or lose a few games.

Do you honestly think so? I'm hoping that something was discussed prior to him coming back from his injury...like the team wants to showcase JC since he has been playing well, or wait till his injury is fully healed, something.

yes. our chances at resigning Kyle dropped when the club gave his starting role to Jose over an injury. you shouldn't lose your starting job to injury in this league.

the team has rubbed both Jose and Kyle the wrong way. both will be gone. one sooner than the other.

should have stuck with Kyle. showed trust in his recovery and let him make mistakes when coming off the injury.

He's still not completely over the injury or injuries. He tweaks an ankle and heads straight to the locker room. Coming off the bench and playing conservatively for some time was likely a part of the plan. No need to overdramatize things. He looks pretty happy here. After seeing a lot of acquisitions looking like a dark cloud was hanging over their heads, his demeanour is pretty easy on the eyes.

Remember how he was supposedly sulking and hurried off before before talking to the media? And then how he ended up going to a funeral? We need to stop imagining things here. What is going to matter is how effectively BC is able to make deals and bring at least one other quality player that compliments him and assures him of making the playoffs.
