it seems like in most of the quotes there talking long term

bc got booed alot for drafting jonas, all it is him defending his selection in the early going, all the hype came afterwards where a espn guy said he would be the 2nd pick in the draft this year, its just hype that really wasnt created by the Raptors but after a good year abroad they organisation started talking with more confidence about his game

Got booed by whom? And Chad Ford's comment did not start the hype. I don't know where this comment is coming from. Most agreed he would have been likely the third pick if he was coming to the NBA this season.

Well I do remember lots of fans calling for BC's head after the draft. Lot of them were saying that he just wasted number 5 pick on some skinny soft Euro

To clarify, I meant even last season. From what I've heard there's no way he would have made it past Cleveland at 4 if he didn't have buy out issues, could have even gone 3.

Me included. I don't think i was about him being European for me. But i, like many expected Walker or Knight. JV was kind of out of left field and i knew very little about him. To say people were shocked is an understatement.

I wasn't, because JV was projected to go somewhere in top 5 ( top 3 if I'm not mistaking) But his value dropped, because of the contract issues. If anything i was surprised/happy that he was there at #5

i don't remember him being projected to be top 5 leading up to the draft. If he was, nobody would have been as surprised as most were. Even the Raptor players had never heard of him. Maybe i'm remembering wrong, but the outrage that night wasn't about him having to stay in Europe. He wasn't expected to be picked by us. I remember guys like E. Smith being caught off guard.

I also remember reading somewhere projections that were something like:
1. Irving
2. Kanter
3. JV

I could be wrong though

JV was absolutely projected top 5 last year leading up to the draft, but the toronto media was so focused on Bismack, Knight and Kemba.... and was so against the idea of another Euro that Jonas wasn't even considered an option.

Ha, it wasn't just the Toronto media. It was here as well and i recall some saying he looked too skinny and frail and that he'd get killed in the NBA. Don't remember who that was but i remember reading that here. And a couple people brought him up with most not really that interested in us picking him. I knew nothing about him really and pretty much dismissed him because it appeared a foregone conclusion that we'd pick Walker or Knight....so it seemed.

I'm a little bit scared of all of this hype.

Casey saying that 'worst-case scenario, he's a Joakim Noah'... That puts a LOT of pressure on a young kid just entering the league. While all of these predictions may come true, the Raptors' brass are doing JV no favours in hyping him up so much.

I really hope he doesn't get hyped up SO much that there's no chance that he can possibly live up to all of the expectations placed upon him to be the "saviour" of the franchise. I just hope that the team, the coaches, the brass, and MOST importantly the fanbase are realistic and temper their expectations while this kid grows. It happens so often with Raptors' fans that (maybe because we're waiting for our next saviour),that some gets over-hyped, and then when the unrealistic expectations are not met, we run that person out of town... I really, really, really hope that this does not happen.

He said in an interview that he doesn't read any news or articles about himself. Of course, people mention to him about how important he will be in Toronto, but he doesn't look nervous at all. I think he is used to the hype. Remember, he led the Lithuanian junior teams to 4 gold medals, he is playing with big men and he is a candidate in our national team that will go to the olympic qualification tourney this summer. He knows how easily he can fail, he knows his weaknesses and he knows what people expect from him.

The Official RF Draft Day Thread (Raps select Jonas Valanciunas)

If you look through that thread, the response is largely negative.

However, if you look through this thread, just a few minutes later, you see a much more reasonable reaction after the first flurry of rough posts.

Did you watch the euro last summer? He held his own against top.nba talent, there i doubt he will be better than noah in his rookie year.

I did not watch euro last year, but that's not really the point. While I do agree that there is a good chance he will be successful, there is always a small chance that he will not be. Many players have been successful in other leagues, but struggle to translate that success to the nba.

I'm just saying that you're doing him no favours by pumping him up so much, when there's even a small chance that he won't have an immediate impact. That puts a LOT of pressure on a 20 year old kid that hasn't played an NBA game yet.

Yeah, He was predicted to go between 2 and 4. But we got him because Cleveland grabbed Thompson. We wanted Knight or Walker cuz everyone wanted Jose gone. I'm not going to lie though. I'd love to have JV and Knight on our team next year...
