Question Kleiza a Raptor, for or against?

This time I waited for it to be official before I made this poll

So, is it worth having Kleiza on our team for 18.8M/4 yrs? Or would you have preferred someone else with that money?

Of course, its a steal I think.
Fills a need and brings a great young player.

There are players that i would rather over him obviously, but it's a decent sign we needed a SF and he brings that as well as toughness and can score in various ways and he's an upgrade over Hedo on d although he doesn't get many blocks or steals, but it is great that he was so ecstatic about coming to Toronto

6'5" 245 lbs
25 yrs old
can get out and run
great range
loves going to the basket (not afraid of traffic)
has some "nasty"
reasonable four-year, $19 million dollar contract (think that's right)

what's not to like

Correction he's 6-8. I like the signing mostly, but I think he's not a very good defender and maybe we could have used the money to find one on the market.

One that wanted to come here as badly as he does. Good luck. BTW he isn't that bad defensively, he's an upgrade in that department over Turkoglu.

I wish we would have been able to sign him instead of Hedo last year, to be quite honest. Now we have someone who "fits" better, and comes at a great pirce.

BC talked about bringing in a glue guy in his end of season press conference, and Kleiza can be that guy. He's got some grit to him, and was on the Nuggets team when Sonny Weems was a rookie.

Also, when he was with Denver (living out west), I got to watch some of his games... There was a stretch where Camello was out for a few weeks, and Denver moved him into their starting lineup. Quite honestly, the team didn't miss a beat, as other players stayed in the roles, and Kleiza all of a sudden became the main scorer. He did really well, with a mix of shots from the outside, and getting into the lane. At times, he settles for 3s too much, but it sounds like he's been working on his low-post game too, in Europe.

Add to that, a player that WANTS to come to the Raptors (as opposed to a few unnamed players) and I'm ecstatic for this deal.

Are you sure? I've read some Denver newspapers from the past and they described how the coach had to bench him because of his inability to defend. If he's an upgrade over Hedo, all the better.

It`s hard to be worse. A lot of players are an upgrade over Turkuglo defensively.

he's not overpaid, it's a good piece to have for sure, but I'm not sure at this point in time we really needed somebody like him

I'm not saying Hedo is good defensively, but he certainly isn't the worst on this roster. Surprising fact: he led the Raptors last season in steals per game at 0.7

A tough 25yr old SF on a reasonable contract when we lacked depth at that position? Why not?

Steals don`t define defense and in my opinion, Turk was the worst defensive player. He also took a lot of bad fouls.

excellent signing... how could anyone be against this?
sure, he isnt that "sexy FA" name that people wanted, but anyone who watches basketball knows that this kid can flat out play.
he's a bruiser, he doesnt back down... he gives us something that we've been lacking in the past; a hard-nosed, tough guy that has offensive skill. he can knock down the open shot, and has great range.
he's a perfect fit here, IMO, and we got him cheap.
love the signing.

Defense: Plays with good intensity on the defensive end, but isn’t quick enough laterally to make an impact. Does a good job staying in position and doesn’t miss many rotations, but lacks the foot-speed to keep up with the more athletic small forwards in the game. Will get beat of the dribble pretty frequently, and while he is strong enough to keep some players out of the lane, many are capable of blowing by him. He compensates for his lack of quickness by playing off his man, allowing him to take jump shots instead of making him give the ball up. Rebounds the ball at a decent rate, but will leak out rather than helping out on the glass on some occasions. While he is smart enough to know his limitations, he’ll need to shed some weight to become quick enough to be a factor on the defensive end.
Quote:
Defensively, Kleiza shows his biggest limitations as a wing. While he plays with good energy and awareness, his footspeed is lacking. Kleiza has trouble challenging shooters without giving up the driving lanes. This problem is especially difficult to mask on a team that is as poor defensively as Denver.

Foot-speed isn’t the end-all when it comes to perimeter defense, but a slower defender like Kleiza must rely on tenacious ball-pressure with the knowledge that his help defenders will be in position to pick up the driving opponent. Kleiza doesn’t play intense perimeter man defense. He is more inclined to get into position and try and react to his opponent’s moves. Because of this, he gets beat on ball-fakes and counter moves off the dribble that take advantage of his slower reaction time.
Quote:
Overview: An offensive specialist who will knock down shots from the perimeter at a solid rate. Has good size and strength for either forward spot, but isn’t incredibly agile. Surprisingly good straight line speed. Doesn’t get by on his physical assets. A very good spot up shooter when he’s on his game. Will put points on the board in a hurry and can get extremely hot. Not a very good defender due to his lack of athleticism. Possesses a very high basketball IQ. Offers some rebounding on both ends.
Quote:
Overall, Kleiza has become much more effective offensively. His decision making on when to drive off his spot up opportunities has improved substantially, and he is hitting his pull-up jump shots at a better rate than in years past. He looks comfortable shooting with a defender close by, and finishes shots very well even under pressure. Kleiza is very effective at finishing near the basket, where his soft touch and powerful frame help him to bull past defenders and put up a quality shot.
Haven't seen him play much but he sounds like a younger, stronger turk without the playmaking abilities but who gives it his all every night

For all interested this is a great in-depth scouting report on Linas Kleiza.
