Kirilenko?

Is anyone else impressed with AK47 and the way he's been playing for the Russian NT this summer? The more I think about it, the more I feel like he might be the perfect free agent to chase this year (assuming the lockout ends sometime soon).

He's a defensive minded vet that does everything that we lack. I know we need a true C but with JoVa a year away it wouldn't make much sense to invest a lot of money in someone to fill that role. We also have depth at every other position except the 3. The good thing about AK is that while he can play the 3 he's also extremely versatile and can help with rebounding and shotblocking too... both of which are things we need.

The only concern is that he probably wants a decent contract and we'd have to overpay to get him. With that said, we have the capspace and we're going to use it one way or another... I don't think we can go wrong investing in a guy that's as versatile as AK. If his shot isn't falling at the very least you know he's going to play pesky defense and help us win in other ways. He's not as one dimensional as other free agents we've targeted in recent years so I think it'd be a wise choice (assuming we can land him).

Thoughts?

If the price is reasonable I'd love to see him here. I think he's always wanted to play a bigger role in the NBA - like he does with Russia - but Utah has been so well balanced throughout his tenure, until now I guess. But it seems Utah would rather run with Gordon Hayward. The Raps, however, are one of the few teams that could and perhaps should provide AK the chance to sink or swim as a leader in the NBA. Very intriguing I must admit.

Post more often, hitman67. God dammit post more often!

I can tell you one thing, he won't be getting a 17 million dollar a year contract like the last one he signed, especially from us. But if he's willing to come play for cheap, maybe the MLE, why not?

Although I would imagine he would rather play for a contender.

I don't know why everyone says that , not that i am saying he has a possibility of coming here but "most" of the nba out of a certain few would rather take the money then a slim chance of winning a "ring".

The man has made more than enough money in his career. Last year alone we made more than 17 million dollars. All he needs, and all he wants, is a ring.

18 million. You want the Raptors to pay that chump 18 biggin's? Seriously man, you could pay Ed Davis 10 bucks an hour, and he'll put more on the floor then Kirilenko ever could.

Besides, it's Euro-Ball. Nicolas Batum looks like Lebron James out there for pete's sake.

hitman67 09-10-2011 02:14 AM

Where are you getting 18 million from? Last I checked he's an unrestricted free agent so he has to negotiate a new contract. Are you suggesting that he'll demand the max?

I think I will :) I've been a lurker for a while so might as well start posting. I've always liked the vibe here.

Or just suck it up for another (short) year and draft Harrison Barnes.

Kirilenko is ok. But that's not a guy you should jeopardise rebuilding for...
He's slowing down and even breaking down a little.
I mean the NBA, but this isn't even a great Eurobasket by his standards either.
He's been way better before.
Been there, done that, returned to an NBA pedestrian over and over again.

Btw, is Russia getting wildly overrated or what?
The easiest schedule in Eurobasket so far - by FAR.
The only game against a decent team (Slovenia) was basically a draw - btw, Kirilenko sucked there.
And anytime I watch them (bar the early prep game against Lithuania) they look good but far from elite.
Maybe it's just my luck with catching them at a bad time, idk.
But guys have been calling them a serious contender for gold which to me is crazy.

His body has always broken down a little too easily, but even so, if he could show anything of the form he's had in the past, I wouldn't complain.

AK47<James Johnson

Why would we pick up veteran injury prone player, when we have a younger healthier player in Johnson that has almost the same skill set & is waiting to prove it to the world.

Kirilenko in his two best years was more dominant than Ed Davis ever will be..... I could be wrong, but I doubt it. AK47 has definitely slowed down and isn't the same player, but there were several reasons he got that huge paycheck.

That's your opinion, NOT fact. Lol

I don't want AK47 b/c he's not what he used to be, but I also don't think Johnson is as good as AK47 was. He simply hasn't proven it. We'll see.

Calgary Jazz 09-10-2011 11:05 AM

AK was underutilized badly by Sloan since Deron Williams and Boozer resurected Sloan's favorite 1 to 4 offense and since 2007 he was never the player he used to be in his All-star years. He needs to have touches on offense to produce and play close to the rim, placing him on perimeter was a disaster ( for AK production) decision by Sloan. Not sure about Raptors but AK could be a monster stat filling freak on a team like GSW, Suns or New York. Run and gun, small ball is where he would excel. Reading quite a few interviews it looks like he is not looking for big money, he said he has enough and he will look for best scenario for his career and his family.

agreed

ak47 is a decent player and better than JJ but he is a duplicate player and right now our team is heading in the direction of the young core guys which includes JJ, the money for ak47 could be used more wisely with a different position player

I don't think Johnson is what AK is today. I don't think it's even close.
He doesn't even have a cool nickname. And some guy thinks they are the same? Wtf?
Also, the gap on D and jump shot is quite huge too.

We can leave the past AK in peace, Johnson will never get there. Unless someone donates him 5 inches of wingspan and raises his lateral quickness from mehh to f-inawesomefdksdhfgsdhfg.

And I'm not sure he'll ever improve to reach the current level of AK.
He's healthy though, so there's that.

Did I say once that I wanted to offer him that kind of money? No. All I said was that he made 18 million dollars last year from that massive contract he signed years ago, so he does't need to sign with a basement dweller for more money.

Read the posts, people. :reporter:

Agreed.

FWIW AK's best seasons were Utah's worst.
