Well to me any move that adds a solid ~30 year old to this team right now is simply odd.

If you just add any talent that's good for this current team, you can easily hurt the team long term. In fact, most likely you will.

2012 draft is so good.
And it makes so much sense for Raptors to suck one more year while waiting for Valanciunas. And then add Drummond or Barnes or whoever with another top 5 pick.
That's a serious young core.

"Add talent" through free agency generally doesnt work unless (A) you already have a great core which you don't yet; or (B) you don't just add talent but add superstar talent like Miami or LA or whatever.

We could bomb the whole season and still miss out on guys like Drummond and Barnes. It's not guaranteed man. While I agree that I think we're one pick away from having a solid young core for the future... I still think we need to improve our team this offseason. We have capspace and regardless of what people think we're going to use it. Do you honestly think BC won't use the capspace available to sign players that he feels will improve the team?

This team imo desperately needs a veteran. We currently have 9 players that are 25 and younger, with two more coming in a year (Valacuanas + 2012 pick). We have enough youth once we get another high pick. We need to add a vet prior to whenever the next season begins and one more the following season, if for nothing more than helping this young group going in the right direction and help with their development and confidence.

Most of that is not quality youth though, and good FA vets will quite certainly make that pick lower.
Next summer is the time for vets.
Right now Raptors should keep shopping almost everyone around -- trying to land young prospects / picks -- or at worst just suck it out till next summer.

I see where you're coming from. But i'd still like to see a vet come in, and coupled with our new coach can start guiding the young players that we currently have, before another batch of youngsters come in next year. Get these guys on track than get the newer youngsters on track the following year. I also think this team desperately needs a big man coach. Have him work with Bargs, Alabi, Amir and Davis and get them going, then next season get Val integrated in an established system.

Having Calderon, Evans and Barbosa as vets makes sense. But everyone is so fast to try and get rid of them...

AK isn't likely to play for small money. If I'm not mistaken, he's a bit of a hard ball player that way. Seeing as his better days MAY be behind him, it might be a mistake for a team like Toronto to take that gamble.

It's cause they make a lot of money.... you can find cheaper, yet not necessarily less influential vets.

if reggie had taken a small contract i would've loved to keep him, as much because i loved watching him. We may not have had a 30pt player but we had a premier 'bounder! To be fair tho we don't really need him.

i reckon barbosa is just about worth the money. Calderon not worth the money.

Listen up meng, Lamarcus Aldridge pretty much averaged 28 n' 12 all season long meng. You know what the Blazers paid him? NOT ENOUGH! Cuz on the other side of the Rocky Mountains you got AK burying Utah 47 feet under the ground with an 18 million dolla contract!
