Keon Clark sentenced to 8yrs in prison

Quote:

DANVILLE, Ill. - Former Toronto Raptor Keon Clark, who has said he is trying to turn his life around, was sentenced to eight years in prison Wednesday in a plea agreement with prosecutors on weapons and driving under the influence charges."I, uh, did a lot of stuff in my past," Clark tearfully said at his plea hearing in Vermilion County Circuit Court, The News-Gazette reported (Ex-NBA player sentenced to eight years in prison | News-Gazette.com).

"I have to own up to it."Clark pleaded guilty to two charges in two separate cases and was given four years for each count. He previously faced weapon, drug and traffic-related charges. The 38-year-old Danville native was 23 when he became the 13th overall pick in the 1998 NBA draft. He last played for the Utah Jazz and Phoenix Suns.Clark has spoken publicly of his long battle with alcohol, which he says also occurred during his NBA career. He now says he's been sober for five months. He previously told the newspaper he wasn't prepared mentally to handle the lifestyle of a professional athlete, and says he was already on a "destructive path."

"The money, the fame, the fact that I was on TV. People think money will make your life better. Money didn't dissolve my problems. It increased them," he said, adding that he's been getting counselling while he's in custody.Clark has been in the Vermilion County jail since Aug. 4. Prosecutors said he will have to serve 50 per cent of his sentence. He will receive credit for 138 days already served and must serve his sentences consecutively.Clark's defence lawyers requested that the judge recommend he serve time at an Illinois Department of Corrections drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility outside Chicago so he can continue treatment.Lawyer Jim Martinkus of Champaign said after the hearing that he hopes Clark's treatment would "cure him of his addiction, which is the cause of most of his troubles."Clark smiled and waved to supporters at the beginning of the hearing, including his mother and members of the Carter Metropolitan Community Church in Danville.

At one point during the hearing, he stood and addressed them, saying, "It could've been a lot worse. It's going to be a lot better."Clark played six seasons in the NBA, including a season and a half in Toronto. The Raptors acquired him in a trade from Denver midway through the 2000-01 season. He averaged nine points and 5.4 rebounds over 46 games.

I thought of making a thread about this as well, so sad.

Looking back at highlight clips of Clark I became overwhelmed by melancholy for those good old days. I was still young, just a Raps fan and we had so much promise as a team. Spectacular play, I still remember the triple overtime game against the Kings, such exciting times! I just realized the constant losing of recent years, all the whining about player salaries and efficiency numbers nearly ruined the game for me. Now I'm super sad! :( I want to go back and believe in this franchise!!

Didn't he admit to being drunk at the start of half the games he played?

I really don't have an sympathy for any sports player that makes a huge amount of money and fucks up their life. Only thing I can say is I hope he learns from this, serves his sentence and moves on.

It sucks when people realize the money isnt the solution one's life. But its really not the money's fault either -

It's the person.

He can always become mayor of Toronto in 2020. We have low standards. Can't wait to get my picture taken with him.

My first espn handle was keon_clark - I was a big fan. Hope he can get some help.

I'll never forget when he would come to the score table to check in.

The ACC would star to buzz with excitement. Apparently, he was already buzzed.

Hope dude gets help and gets his shit together.

I'll never forget this dunk.

Or this one.

He gets to join the biggest prison population in the world. That's sure to be helpful. At least he won't stand out too much.

didn't he play for the raps for half a year and signed a long term deal with the kings, why don't they use a team that he played for longer than a cup of coffee

Probably because it is written by Canadian Press for a Canadian audience that probably finds it much more newsworthy due to him being a former Raptor. It was also the only place he had any success.

funny because when i first read that part i read it twice because i thought he played here longer than that. I have very fond memories of Keon and he was an important part of the best team we ever had. I forgot that he was a raptor for such a short time.

ah my bad, I read the yahoo sports part and the Danville part thinking its U.S article
