Kelly: Raptors fans need to find a balance on their emotional see-saw - The Globe and Mail

Quote:
“As a city, as a country, we have to learn how to win, too,” Ujiri says. “I know [the fans] are starved for something. I understand that. But be a fan of the game, be a fan of the team and the culture, and grow with it. Don’t put it up at a level it’s not …” – Ujiri indicates a point high above his head – “and don’t kill us at a level it’s also not …” – and Ujiri holds his hand down to the floor.
Long story short Masai is telling everyone to be realistic.. And I totally agree. I'm not going to lie there are times where I forget that Raptors were't SUPPOSE to make it anywhere last season even after the trade. Everyone had the tank flags waving and calling it quits. Where we are now is pretty miraculous. When Masai mentioned that the Raptors fans are hungry, I think that's where the emotional see-saw came from. Everyone wanted more and more when we made it to the play offs last year. But then everyone started to disregard growth. We are still growing. And it does feel like a lot of fans are putting us at a level that we aren't. We were exposed after the all start break. We aren't at THAT level yet.

Good article overall.

Masai has said all the right things this past week. He's been very patient and could've easily made panic trades to help this team in the short term push for playoffs.

I BELIEVE IN :mu:

There was a Raptors Meet and Greet on MU's first day on the job. In an email, we were told there is no way MU could fit in his sched to be there.

Sure enough he was the first guy in the door. :mu:

As a fan, I have a problem accepting a loss due to a sub par performance. We've been getting our share of "poor efforts" since the break. Do you want us as fans, to make excuses for the team and not call it like it is!

The sub par performance is part of growth.

I believe in this team, but some things just disappoints some things just disappoint people, like running the same ISO play at the end of EVERY quarter, lack of effort sometimes and etc, and when there's room for improvement - we better improve, because that's how greatest victories are achieved. Nevertheless, go Raps!

I think calling it like it is, is what he wants. But saying the team stunk that night or are struggling recently and taking it to "blow it up" territory is another thing all together. I guess he's asking for perspective and to not panic, forgeting how good this team has been for the better part of 16 months.

So Derozan doesn't have to go? Casey doesn't suck? I'm so confused.

While I agree with the overall sentiment, I was also never very high on this team and I still have serious concerns that mere tweaks could turn us into an elite team, capable of actually contending. Which doesn't bother me all that much, at least not yet. Winning 50 games for a few seasons is not the worst thing for a team that never did it in its previous 20 seasons or so.

Still, there's also danger if we take this point of view at face value (which I seriously doubt we should - masai is merely trying to calm things imo). Masai needs, and I'm sure he does ask himself the big question all the time. If he believes there is enough promise with this team that it's worth waiting for a stroke of good luck to push us over the top, then so be it. If not, more significant changes are required.

The next 2 seasons will present a host of major challenges and opportunities, from demar's, JV and TR's extensions, to lowry's and amir's replacements, creating and using our potential max cap space and so on. It will be a very difficult time for Masai and probably very exciting for us, the fans ...

Yeah, i think he basically is saying he doesn't need all of us doing his job alongside him, while setting our hair on fire. That kind of excitement he probably doesn't need.

Sometime I really hate our fan base and especially those trolls that goes on other team board and trash talking when we win; then when we lose they complain like a whinny little 7 year old our team suxs balls trade him fire the coach and etc; We have the whole country supporting us and it's nice and all but they are making us Torontonian look bad. Sometime people need use their brain; we're having a good season and going to the playoff; also back to back Atlantic division and hopefully a 50 wins 2nd round exit; just sit back and have fun and enjoy the playoffs

I can't wait to be the 2009-2013 Atlanta Hawks! (This would actually be a lot of success for us)

Let me help you here with your confusion, Derozan has got to go, JV should be playing 40+ min, Casey should be fired, Ball Don't Lie should be hired as a head coach, niggles and DanH as assistants.

Somehow it's the same old pattern and most of them think that:
1. Casey sucks
2. JV is God
3. DD is a bad player and can't be a piece of a successful team.
4. JJ is our best defender and should start no matter what.
5. In MU they trust - even though he is responsible for some of the things they don't like about the team.

Go figure.

I think that MU will do whatever it is necessary. Meaning if DD happens to be it, he will stay.. if not then trade. Same with the coach and the rest of the staff, plus players. But as of now he believes in them. The right time for everyone to start crying is when MU doesn't do anything right I think.
