Where the hell was any of this in your original post? I'm no history expert so I wouldn't know anything about marriage practises in the 1900s so I can't tell ya.

As a 19 year old though I can tell you marriage in my perspective as well as many is for when two people are ready to settle down and start a family, someone who just turned 20 shouldn't end their own social lives in turn for parenthood. Jeff said it best, most 20 year olds don't have much and haven't really fulfilled enough themselves to even be in that mindset. Though Jonas is a millionaire basketball pro, he's no exception.

You're basically locking yourself up away from many freedoms.
This is also from a non-European perspective.

that's fine. there's nothing wrong with either perspective. they're both opinions. mine is if you fall in love, strong enough, and been with the person long enough, whether you're 30 or 23, marriage is an option. some people don't feel the same way. no biggie.

lay off

congrats to him, does seem a bit to young and soon but if this is what and who he wants and if he's happy than why not? Good for his image too.

professional athletes are easy targets but regular people get schooled for what they got too, over marriage.

UM....have you looked at her.

New perspective, how many of you have been dating a perfect ten woman you have been in complete love with...?

Wanna stay free...why? So you can find that one perfect woman? So you kick her to the curb because you got lucky and found here right away?

EWff that. If he's in love, and she is that hot, and she is, then hey, have at it big fella.

Ps. Pizzababy, you're lost at seas with no paddle, no communication with the world, and no water.

Your views on marriage come from your life experiences, culture and at times outside influences. Myself, I've seen many people in my family divorce. My aunt got married at 21, had two kids and was divorced by the time she was 30 after her husband cheated on her. Their marriage was a complete disaster and I was a close witness to most of it since I am godfather to one of her kids. She went after all of his money, got the house, the kids, etc.....it was messy. I was pretty young at the time and I've gotta say that if I ended up with a marriage like that i'd consider offing myself. I also don't want kids for various reasons, therefor for me I say why get married?

Don't get me wrong my family is close, but if I was surrounded by great marriages and influenced by less turmoil maybe i'd be more inclined to get married or even have children. Who knows though.

I enjoy my space, my freedom and have found a girlfriend that also doesn't want children and although we've discussed marriage neither of us see it as important or necessary at this point, which could change. But we've been together nearly 7yrs and if we last 10yrs my bet is we'll still not be married unless there is an accidental pregnancy (knock on wood that never happens).

IMO for a marriage to work you have to find the right person that has similar views on life and what they want out of it. Both parties have to be stable and on solid ground financially. Even with all of that there are no guarantees that it works. Add to it being 20-22yrs old and imo the marriage stands less of a chance because I think someone's 20's are supposed to be about freedoms after schooling and finally being on your own, and self discovery which is where you ultimately come to a conclusion with what you really want in life. At 20yrs old you know fuck all about life.

All that being said everyone has to live their life the way they see fit.

Oh and I was engaged at 21yrs old after a 3yr relationship. It didn't work out as we both started wanting different things and were far too young.

Getting married at 20 can be a bad idea because, well, most 20 year olds are NOT really fully formed adults in almost every sense of the definition. Heck, the male brain is still going through changes.

pizza-goof, if your personality is very similar at 28 as it is at 18, you're in some serious trouble. The only reason I have a bit of faith that you won't be a total fuck up in life is because most people grow quite a bit between 18-25.

What Bill said,

Don't mean to offend you pzabby but from i read you are still very very naive (even though you don't realize it). Honestly chicks are gonna have their way with you, they don't like whiny little girls, they need man. That's why being romantic and living in a dream world will leave you heartbroken.

Who the fuck cares?

Get married, don't get married or jerk off into a tube sock for the rest of your life ffs.

Just do what you want and what makes you happy regardless of what others think or societal standards dictate you should do and make sure you don't have any regrets...
