Default Just Imagine The Leafs or Raptors As Champs

A pipe dream for Raptors fans and still light years away for Leafs fans.

Within the previous year, the Boston Red Sox had won another World Series and the New England Patriots had won another Super Bowl.

Imagine if that happened in Toronto? Imagine if just one of Toronto's professional sports teams won a North American championship?

Toronto, to be sure, is Canada's sports capital. It is the only Canadian city to house an NBA team and is also home to the nation's lone Major League Baseball club.

But aside from the Toronto Argonauts of the (all-Canadian) Canadian Football League winning the odd Grey Cup here and there, pro sports teams that are based in T.O. have not exactly spurred ticker-tape parades down Yonge St. in quite a while. (And even the Argos missed the CFL playoffs this season.)

Think about the drought.

The Leafs last sipped Stanley Cup champagne in 1967. It's been 15 years since the World Series flag carried the Blue Jay logo. And the Raptors have never won an NBA championship, though they are on the rebound as a contender and are off to a quick, early start this season.

But Boston suffered through parched times as well before New England became an NFL power within the last decade, the Red Sox won two World Series titles after going 80 years without one and the Celtics only last season returned to championship form that used to be commonplace back in the 60s, 70s and early 80s.

Toronto? With the Blue Jays missing the playoffs again in '08 and with the Argos having finished this season with eight straight losses, it's up to the Leafs and Raptors to try for championships that have been harder to get than the truth from a politician.

Just imagine the Leafs or Raptors as champs.

I've got quite an imagination but it all goes blurry whenever I even try to think the unthinkable.

If the Leafs ever win the Stanley Cup again, I don't know if I'll be able to look my neighbour in the eye, let alone listen to him. And if the Raptors can somehow pull off an NBA title, I'll head straight to Toronto and reserve a corner table at the venerable Brunswick House, complete with a tray of draught beer on my tab.

But I get the feeling that I'll be looking my Leaf-loving neighbour straight in the eye for years and more years to come. And I don't think it'll be my round when I walk into the Brunswick House with my season-ticket-holding Raptor friend the next time I'm in Toronto.

Not that it would bother me if the Raptors were to win it all. I've been a Celtics' fan ever since I first played driveway basketball at 102 Maple St. in Sault Ste. Marie (circa 1960) but my daughter Cara has become a Raptor follower since moving to Toronto last year.

So, if only for Cara, I can handle the Raptors bringing down the NBA house. Just don't expect me to ever become a Leaf rooter.

There's a better chance of me disowning Alexander Keith.

Seems a little much. National sports championships are not easy to come by and the Jays won 2 not that long ago(or maybe it's just my age showing through?) as I remember where i was for both Joe Carter finished plays. It was crazy. I think it would be bigger if the Leafs could pull it off just because of the history and popularity of the sport.. Raptors would be big but not as widespread excitement. That said the Raps winning one would generate a lot of new fans as they'd want to be with the 'in' crowd in the sporting community.

The Raptors are the best. If they won, I would go crazy, maybe even to a strip joint.

Should the Raptors winning really be the thing that convinces you to go to a strip club?

Oddly enough I think the Jays are closest. Get Manny this summer and they're a contender.

I can't even imagine the feeling. But as of right now, there are still at least 3 teams in the East we can't take.

I hope the leafs never win a damn thing, and ppl stop going to games, obv never going to happen, but im sick of this dysfunctional organization and ppl that blindly follow them because their upbringing, regardless of how many times the team has shit on them.

Now the Raptors winning would be the best, not just because they are my favorite team, but it's like watching a child grow up (for those of us that have been fans since day one), seems we had an early growth spurt then regressed and are finally coming of age!! Maybe a few years yet, but i think we are on the right track.

Jays are still in a division with Boston, New York and a crazy talented and young Tampa Bay team, to think we can win anytime soon is optimistic at best.

Right now the Raptors are the only team that has a snowballs chance in hell to win anything in the next 2-3 years by far!The leafs suck and will for a while, the blue jays are a decent team but competing against the Yankees/Red Sox and now the Devil Rays is going to make it a long shot for them for the forseeable future.

Yea I agree JAys are the closest. They have good pitching, now all they need are those runs. You can say the same thing wiht the Raps though. All they need is a legit wing

I don't think so at all! Look at how hard it is just to make the playoffs in Baseball. If the Jays don't finish ahead of 2 of 3 teams (Boston/NY/TB) they are toast and don't even get a sniff. The point is the only playoff team in this city right now is the Raptors. And if you make the playoffs you've got a shot,no matter how little that may be.

Nope as long as that idiot Riccardi (and howmany year plan ... now) is gm, blue jays are not going to win a championship. Also they won't have the starting pitching next year that they had this year. Marcum is gone for next season (surgery), Burnett opting out of his contract (asswhole only gave us 1 good year and leaves, same old story for Toronto and injury prone pitchers). That leaves us with Halladay, McGowan and Litch (who was even demoted part of the season because he was inconsistent. Big holes in starting pitching with #2 and #3 gone.

Until Leaf fans stop going to games and make MLS put a winning product on the ice don't expect any changes there.

The Raptors are the only bright spot in sports in Toronto. At least they can make it to the playoffs. So I would say much closer then either Jays or Leafs.

If the leafs won everyone would be at the hospital because they would need to be treated for shock. There would be 2 million people on the streets and we would have a week long holiday because cars won't be able to move.

Back when Canada won the gold at the Olympics (the whole lucky loonie thing), I had the luck of not only being in downtown Toronto, but also having courtside seats for the Raps that same day. The ACC was full of Team Canada jerseys, which had me torn. On the one hand, we were at a basketball game and people were all about hockey that day, but on the other hand, it was something bigger than hockey that we were experiencing. My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I were walking aroung Dundas Square, watching people dance on top of the City TV vans. It was insane, just a huge party. If the Raptors could pull it off, it would be a great party, but if the Leafs did it (and as you all know, I HATE the Leafs), the city would explode.
