Check that image. Its from Japan 2006. Are you going to kill them for wearing those bandanas too?
They like to play the fool wherever they go. If they went to Mexico they would be wearing mexican hats. Thats all.

Btw, Hi everyone. I've been reading this forum for quite a long time but never posted till now.

While I'm not offended by the original photo, there's quite a significant difference between making Asian slanted eyes and wearing traditional Japanese bandana. Or am I missing something and only Japanese people can wear them and anyone not Japanese who wears them is insulting their culture?

Nice to have you here and I'm sure our fellow resident Spaniards Belsius and rapsfan087 will be happy to see another fan here. Welcome aboard.

Of course there's a difference.
Hell, I'm sure Japanese people thought it was cool that the team sported said headbands.

I don't think most orientals would think the new picture is cool in the same light.
Actually most asians i've spoken to are insulted.

Honestly, i don't know who's idea this new photo was, but damn man... not cool at all.

I mean what were they thinking!?

Let's just hope the lesson has been learned, becuase i really don't think there was any malicious intent. Just a bad decision.

Its all done in good fun im sure. But dont these teams have PR people for team photo's or something, Team USA would definately get roasted harder, but i dont think even if the team had the bad idea to do it, it would happen. Just a bad idea guys, no real harm done, but some real bleeding hearts could be offended, no point in stirring the pot so you deal with silly questions during the tourny.

Just adding to thread.

I was just too lazy to click "edit" for my initial post to add my views.

I'm still going to cheer for spain when it comes to basketball.

Hehe probably it's me the one missing something.
I just dont see any offense in making those slanted eyes.
Maybe in some countries they use that gesture to make fun of Asian people, but this is the first time I hear of that.
Anyway, the spanish team loves to play the fool a bit, but they do it together as a team, which is their best asset, playing as a team. Let's hope the US team play like an AllStar game at some point and we get a good chance there

oh trust me... It is definately viewed as a way of making fun of asians.

Memo to ballbreaker: when travelling in China or anyother Oriental country, don't do that gesture if you want to avoid trouble.

hello!

I would like to share a story with you about something that happened with the Spanish National Team that someone interpreted incorrectly. It happened in the photo session where the Spanish National Team was introduced; one of our sponsors asked us to pose with a “wink” to our participation in Beijing, we made an oriental expression with our eyes. We thought it was something appropriate and that it would always be interpreted as somewhat loving. Never the less some of the European media did not see it this way.

From here I would like to declare that we have a huge respect for the East and their people, some of my best friends in Toronto are from China and one of our Spanish National Team sponsors is the Chinese brand Li Ning. Anyone who would like to interpret this differently is absolutely confused.

I would argue that those who interpreted the slanty eyes gesture as "appropriate" and "loving" are the ones who are absolutely confused, no?

dunno, who knows better than you why you do the things you do?

That's the why they did that, not a interpretation. All of us know that it could be easily interpreted in the other way, and that is what they had to have thought first.
