Are you saying my rod is nim? Now that is really really really insulting. You have never even seen my rod. And let me just tell you that it is far from nim.

Now that the olympics are over it seems that chinese officials are taking a bit harder stance on the old 'slant eyes' gesture...

...note the word 'obviously'...

Kathie Lee angers Asians

By Amber Dowling

2008-09-02

Chinese impression on ‘Today’ show angers Asian journalists
You’d think people would learn from Rosie O’Donnell’s mistakes, especially since she gets so much flack for them.

Well, apparently Kathie Lee Gifford didn’t. The Today host invoked the former View co-host earlier this week with an impression of an Asian that involved mimicked speech and squinted eyelids.

Gifford was relating a call she received from weather anchor Al Roker on her birthday, claiming Roker was poking fun at her husband’s aging with an “authentic Chinese accent.”

Obviously Asian journalists are in an uproar over the impression, and have filed an official complaint letter to NBC and the Today Show.

“It's difficult to believe in this day and age, and immediately following an Olympics hosted by China, that Today host Kathie Lee Gifford chose to relate on national television an ‘amusing’ anecdote about Al Roker sending birthday greetings to her in a mock ‘Chinese’ accent,” read the letter dated Aug. 28.

“To see such a high-profile television personality behave this way on a national network program ostensibly billed as a news show sends a signal across the country that mocking Asians in this way is acceptable. Let's be clear: Such ‘humor’ based on highly offensive racial stereotypes with such an ugly history is never acceptable.”

she was mocking asian accent, the spanish team wasnt mocking the slanted eyes. And besides, everytime southpark, the simpsons, jon stewart, etc, etc, etc.... mock chinese and arabs I dont hear anyone complaining.
one would say that the "Shitty Wok" chinese man from south park would be more offensive.

After seeing what the Spanish Hockey team looks like, I have to say the basketball team looks pretty tame.

What? I just thought it was funny that they were wearing dresses. Crazy spanish hockey players!

Actually the picture pre-dates the use of the swastika as a symbol of fascism. But go right at my German heritage. I have about just as much Russian heritage, and they all came to Canada to escape from warmongering, imperialistic regimes before the crimes of the last Century were committed. Even so, the holocaust was perpetrated by humans, not Germans.

I don't actually know what you mean, and no I'm not playing dumb. If you can't bear to see a swastika on a group of Edmonton girls in 1916, then I suggest you don't go to India in support of Apu, or you'll be throwing punches in every village you go to.

Anyway, ease up Mike. I happen to think this picture does make the Spanish team look not so bad in context, and I think there is a contextual equivalency in that neither team meant to look bad, but when you see one in the larger context of events that followed, and the other in the larger context of ways that the same behavior has been used negatively, then the picture can say more than anyone intended.

Soviet flag is not funny either Mike, specially for people from eastern Europe or Georgians!

1. If you are ready to compare Soviet flag to a Nazi svastika, you will have to provide some arguments to support this, preferably of a personal nature, because...

2. To me, an Ashkenazi Jew, that symbol represents the highest level of hate achievable for a group conscience. My family and families of my friends have lost members to both concentration camps and battles fields. That's my explanation for my personal reaction.

LX, I had no problem with the picture. I had a problem with your usage of it.

And, oh enlightened one, thanks for letting me know about the origins of the svastika symbol. I shall now sleep better at night.
