Faggots use the word faggot themselves. You get that right? It's called context.

This is from D Smith's blog. It's well put and with Jose's sentiments proving to turn towards something more thoughtful, I'm good. The world isn't such a bad place now after all, and I'll wear the man's jeersey. It just takes a little humanity. As unfun as that might be.

Quote:
Here’s Jose Calderon yesterday morning here on the Spain photo controversy, courtesy of the flash quote system here because I was at a rainy softball park instead of watching Spain-Germany.

"I think we are talking about things that don’t matter. We feel bad, but there is too much talk about it. We are a very multicultural country in Spain. We are for sure going to apologize.”

I figure a formal apology can’t be too long in coming.

And I keep getting asked what the Raptors should do.

I don’t know what they can do. I know they don’t approve, who could? But if Jose and the Spanish federation apologize to those who took offence – which I think is practically everyone – there’s not much else to be said.

It was in bad taste, intentional or not, if they say they’re sorry that’s got to end it.;

And, quite frankly, it’s a non-issue over here. No one I’ve spoken to has seen a single outward show of anger from anyone around the basketball venue, or anywhere else.

It’s certainly hasn’t created a huge buzz in the media. It’s a story, it got written and now there are other stories to work on.

So one minute, this picture is about to destory civilization, and then there is a blog....where Jose has pretty much the same thing as he already has, and your ok?...

...Whatever floats your boat.

Where the fuck do you get this shit? How about this - don't bother interpreting my posts. You do a fucking shitty job at it. I guess you never noticed that I specifically never said it was racist, or required any great penance.

And Jose never said anything about feeling bad or needing to apologize. So your reading skills are shaky all the way around I guess.

But seriously - fuck off with intentionally misreading everything that comes from me. I have no desire to post everything three fucking times and then have you twist everything five different ways.

That's it for me with this. I'm just thrilled that I didn't get called a racist as I have before when I've attempted to tamp down accusations of racism. Thanks for that. Progress.:cheeky-smiley-013:

I always knew Doug Smith sucked as a reporter, but that blog entry takes the cake.

So, has everyone been offended or noone?!

I am so fucking tired of this bullshit. <goes back to eating Japanese babies>

There's too much outcry from non-asian people and too little from north americans ... Even if you are willing to buy the theory that the communist regime (for some weird reason) has decided to forbid its people to complain, that photo wasn't an insult (again, if you believe it was an insult) targeted at chinese, but at asians in general. Why aren't there other asian countries expressing dissapointment and calling for a boycott of spanish products?

Anyway, since this is getting nowhere, can we all at least agree that:

1. there was no harm intended with that picture
2. there was little harm perceived in the asian community
3. there was a lot more harm perceived in the non-asian community

?

1. Who cares they're ignorant
2. No- there was
3. No- you're trying too hard to convince either us or yourself that the non-asian are the only people making a big deal of it. Do realize that the majority of us here are non-asian, therefore it's easy to assume that it's just us making a big deal about it. LX's wife is asian, she was offended. my girlfriend is asian, she found nothing cute about it at all only asking why would they do something so ignorant and insulting.

You're only fooling yourself.

I suggest that you stop speaking on behalf of the asian community.

I understand that people were offended. I don't quite understand why, though.

I also don't understand exactly what the point of the gesture was. Doesn't really make much sense.

Can't we get back to talking about how our embarassing it is to see the way that our athletes are treated by the press (criticism) and the government (funding)?

That's my point exactly, it should be the asian community that makes a big deal about it, not the north american media.

As far as individuals go, just because you or LX got offended, it doesn't mean anything. Pretty much anything one says will probably offend somebody - but only when there's a significant amount of people that take offense you could call that statement as offensive. So far, to my knowledge, there is NO asian organization/country/group of people who took offense, only some media organization based in usa/canada/uk.

Also, I'm no more qualified to speak on behalf of the asian community than you are. I'm not qualified to speak on behalf on anybody by myself - but that doesn't mean I can't express my thoughts. Just because you belong to a community, that doesn't qualify you as a spokeperson.

And finally, my main problem with this situation is not whether those comments were racist or not, as much as the extreme political correctness. I find that a very disturbing and damaging trend that will one day lead to a society where no one will be able to speak their mind.

It's very simple actually - the advertising agency wanted a picture to make a connection between the spanish team and the event in China. They chose some cultural symbols, like the dragon, and then they asked to slant their eyes to look asian. It's not supposed to be a joke like some newpapers took it and it's not demeaning in any way (at least I don't see why it would be demeaning).

you find it disturbing that one day you won't be able to go up to an aboriginal person and do a rain dance in front of them and not have them insulted? oh we should all fear political correctness. personally, i fear people like you who don't have the consideration for others.

Exactly!

That sort of stuff doesn't really surprise me though. Anyone who has played team sports knows what bozos guys can be when they play sports together lol

I was listening to the NBC announcers at the Spain-Usa game and they were talking about the picture. They said that they asked some chinese people and they said it didn't affect them so just stop this whole thread. If chinese people don't care then why should we

Yeah, right, like that's going to stop our kings of political correctness. They will instead work really hard to educate the Chinese on why they should have been offended.:deadhorse:

You people are nuts. Yes, Funkie and LX, that's you I am talking about, unfortunately.

Mike, we know people who were insulted.

I know some 'political correct' topics i've seen you lose your cool over. I guess it all depends on who it effects, right?

it seems to me like you're lumping together things that are very different. I don't see the connection between the photo and the "rain dance" (although I must confess that I'm not familiar with the concept and I don't know a lot about aboriginal people).

also, you're saying that you "fear" me because I don't have consideration for others ... but you don't know anything about me. Yet, you make such a final statement, just because I don't agree with you. I am very much against racism, xenophobia and any extremist movements of any kind. I acknowledge the fact that there is still a lot of racial (and xenophobic) hate in the world, including the so called "civilized" countries.

But for the life of me I can't see what's wrong with that picture - how can it be perceived as offensive? What exactly is the "offense" in that photo? If I were to say that "all (south east) asians have slanted eyes", or "all blacks have black skin", or "all whites have round eyes", would that be offensive? Since when has truth become offensive?

I decided to free myself from the terrible weight of political correctness, and I walked down Spadina with my fingers pulling my eyes back into slits. I walked into a Chinese restaurant and ordered yat ka mein in the same fashion. The entire time I felt completely liberated! It was wonderful! Wonderful I tells ya! At no point did I feel like an idiot or an insensitive dickhead flaunting my historical privileges as a white male. Nor did I worry over how I might be seen as being disrespectful to my courteous hosts. Fucking fun stuff let me tell you. Political correctness begone ye!

There was even some particularly exotic ingredients in my soup that they probably save only for favored customers. It was very nice of them to see my actions for what they were - just being free and oblivious. Delicious! Yummy!

Was that tapioca?
