Default Jose Played Injured Most of The Season

Quote:
Every day for about six weeks, Jose Calderon would arrive at Raptors practice full of hope that he would finally be able to move laterally without feeling a twinge, that he would be able to slide quickly and confidently to his right with no pain.

Every day in the middle of a season slipping away, he'd come to the gym and every day he'd leave disappointed.

Six weeks is an eternity in the NBA – at three or maybe four games a week it's more than a quarter of the season – and having their point guard unable to work out was a critical blow for the Raptors.

Never mind the 10 games he missed. Not having the chance to stay sharp in the daily 90-minute workouts was a killer.

"There was nothing to do," Calderon said this week. "I tried and could not. We did treatment and I had to play the games, but that was it."

I am really hoping he doesn't play for Spain this year, not being able to practice for most of the year has really hurt this team. Raps need the Jose of last year to show up next year.

worst kept secret this year.

I think at this point of his career he will do the right thing and put his NBA career as a priority.

mind you there is probably some debate as to whether or not representing your country is more important than playing for your professional team.... I certainly think he should put Raptors ahead of Spain at this point in his life (do you agree Belsius?)

I'm not saying he should retire from international play or anything, but i do think he should take the summer off for the sake of his pro career.

i think these decisions should come at the discretion of the organization who currently owns their rights. either that, or players who decide to play, their contracts become non-guaranteed so the nba team is not responsible for a cap-hit when they pull something like garbo pulled.

I'm guessing that he was injured last season as well then, and aggravated the injury in the Olympics.

He said he tweaked his groin, and that it wasn't serious.

That's the question though isn't it? What is his actual history of injuries, and is there a connection from one to another or has he just had a bunch of random bad luck?

He played through a bad heel in year one. He killed his ankle in the post-season of year two. Halfway through last season his play slowed down to the point where he looked like he did this season with the hammy. So regardless of how international play has effected him or not, I just want to see the proper rest and the proper work put in to make this guy more durable. If that can happen then watch out, because I think his physical ailments have hurt his game mentally. He needs a really good carefree season before he can be more effective playing hurt.

This all comes down to who's paying the bills. MLSE is paying good money for Jose to be healthy and play at a high level - if he wants to risk a re-aggravation of the injury to be patriotic then MLSE should have every right to step in and nip it in the bud.

The original injury happend in the olympics. I hope he doesnt play the Eurobasket this summer but he doesnt have to retire from the team though. He can play in the worlds or olympics. It all depends on how healthy he is.

So when they said he tweaked his groin, was that just a lie, or is there some connection?

Right now only Calderon and Rubio are locked in the national team. The rest it depends of how they are doing right now. Sergio wasnt chosen the last time. Sadly all the three PGs from the olympics have been badly injured the whole season.

Looking at the internets, it looks like the injury they claimed he suffered in the Olympics - an adductor strain (groin), effects the muscles in the front of the thigh, and the hamstring injury reported now effects the back of the thigh. It's like he's getting it from all sides.

You said that was the original injury - but it seems to be a separate issue. Or am I missing some connection?

Oh, I didnt say it wasnt a separate injury (Im no doctor so maybe there really is connection between the too). Im saying he first got injured in the olympics and since then he hasnt been the same.

wow.

are you guys kidding me?

so a few of us have been talking about how hard it is, and how pointless it is to try o play top level when you have hamstring issues, and further to that I guess an aducter issue which is just as shitty.

( as a point of reference, aducter-groin-hamstring are the thre MAJOR rehab area's I had to rehabilitate after I had my hips replaced, UNBELIEVABLY hard to do.)

Anyhow, so now it's printed in a paper, so NOW, just NOWWWWW you guys can admit to everyone that perhaps you were a little hard on Jose, a guy that just last year the entire league was glowing about....

Priceless.

For next time. If I say a guy is decent, and he's playing hurt and it's why he's playing poorly. do not argue, for my word is the law! (Coach Norman Dale)
