Default Jose

I was just contemplating this yesterday, and I was wondering, could Jose Calderon end up being one of the most popular Raptor players of all time?

I'm just looking at his fan reactions, the way people respond to him, his attitude towards the fans and even after games when fans chant "Jose"; it just got me thinking that he could likely end up being one of the most popular players, to date, to ever wear a Raptors uniform. I know Chris Bosh is our franchise guy, but I think when it's all said and done, the majority of this fan base will love Jose and he will join the echelon that JYD enjoys right now.

I think he's pretty much almost there CG. From the chants to his three point hand symbols that have since been made into T-shirts, the city of Toronto and country of Canada embraced him. Bosh may be our best player, but Jose is by far the most popular.

toronto sports fans have always endeared themselves to hard working, never quit, constant effort guys. In many ways those kind of guys ARE more liked than the prototypical team superstar.

moreover, how can you NOT root for a very unselfish player who has always played with a team-first mentality?

Personally, I'm a huge Calderon fan for the same reasons that i was a huge Garbajosa fan and that i love guys like Jamario Moon. I'm a big fan of Bosh too, and i think that he's a great "franchise-type" player, so i don't want to come off as a hater or anything.

But, yeah. Calde is probably my favorite raptor at this point.

If he continues playing like last season and maybe improves his numbers, coupled with his infectious attitude and determination i think he's almost there already. He's a team first guy that fans in T.O love especially after guys like Wince and T-Mac, guys like Jose,CB4 and from the sounds of it JO are fan favorites.I think BC has really strived to bring in Team first players with a winnning attitude. When you look at AP,Moon,JO,Jose,CB4,Kapono- you don't hear of anyone whining much. And Nathan Jawai appears to be that type of player as well.

Last season Dixon didn't like his lack of playing time and he was traded.I'm guessing thats why BC didn't bring him back this off season when he had the chance.

When I went to see the Raps in game 2 down in Orlando, Jose saw me in my #8 jersey. He stopped his shoot around to come over and say "hi".

If he has a good season (this is a huge challenge for him this season), then he will surpass my former favorite Raptor, Doug Christie...before I knew he was pussy whipped.

Bosh is the man. He posts the huge numbers. He's the guy who is a perennial all-star. Jose is really good but Bosh if better and Bosh is just as good a person.

One thing that's underrated is Jose's confidence issues. When he loses his confidence he fades to nothing. It happened in his first season here when his shot wasn't falling and it happened here last season when TJ came back. Bosh's confidence never seems to fade. Thats important, especially in the playoffs. Bosh is also a better leader.

I think Jose being as humble as he is, is what makes him so endearing to the fans. Bosh albeit is our star, there's an bigger ego to deal with now than there was a couple seasons ago. Last year seemed to be his coming out party which didn't sit well with alot of Raptor fans with his videos and all.

I still like him though and am thankful he's a Raptor.

I can honestly say that Jose will be the most cheered for fan favorite from here on out.
Until CB signs a long term deal with us, that is.

Jose is a rags to riches success story that everyone loves, and wants to relate to.
couple that with the fact that he's here for 5 more years, and you've got your most popular raptor player.
sure, CB gets all the recognition, but true fans love Jose more.

I don't know of this ego you're talking about. You need to differentiate between charisma and being cocky and egotistical. Bosh is charismatic and it seems he never started showing it until he became more confident, as in this past year. His videos were on his own personal web page, he was having fun. They weren't self tributes paying homage to his own game. I don't see this ego you're talking about and if its there then it hasn't shown up on the court.

Don't confuse humble with quiet. Jose is both but they are different. Bosh is also humble but he's no longer quiet and thats not a bad thing.

I'm not sure that's in people's minds after a spectacular dunk or block.

Speaking of fan favourites, I've yet to see a buzz fill the arena like it did when Keon got off of the bench and went to the scorer's table.

And coincidentally, Keon was buzzed too...

Chris Sheridan has Jose taking the Olympics' last shot and barely missing it here.

He also implies that Jose chews balls.

I run into Jose last year (after Raptors lost in playoff against Nets), at Eaton Center Mall, hair saloon, close to Dundas Subway station. I exchanged few words with him, he is a really nice guy with a great attitude, although with a funny accent

Most popular Raptor of all time for Raptor fans - quite possibly Jose

Most popular Raptor of all time for NBA fans - probably Vince. His dunking abilities brought in a lot of new fans to the sport. But heck, what do they know? Darn bandwagon fans
