Because Ontario is the worst and one of the most expensive places in the world to get divorced in. If you aren't having kids right away, getting married here is not +EV.

And prenups don't stand up in court for shit here unless they are for massive sums.

Just because you make millions doesn't mean you want to give up half, or your home. Kids eff a prenup right up for the guy.

i thought prenups were legal documents that could state stuff like no 50/50or spousal support so that the richer half wouldnt get screwed over?

also isnt 50/50 for couples without prenups?

50/50 is for couples without prenups or without kids. Reality is more like 45/55. The Marital home is the marital home and is always split even if you owned 100% of it before marriage. You can keep what you came in with except the home if you can prove it. Child support is singificant and until the child is 25 basically and it doesnt matter if she re-marries. If the woman makes less than the guy he's on the hook for alimony likely to "keep her in the style she's accustomed to living" on top of any child support. You can prenup alimony but any lawyer will advise you to make it a significant sum (e.g. not $100,000/year if you have $20,000,000). Prenups often get voided by judges in Ontario for a host of reasons. The spousal support and the division of assets outside the home can change basically on a judges whim if its seen as unfair or placing the wife in a spot of any hardship at all or if there is any duress in signing it (sometimes thats the problem that judges see women getting married as under duress) etc. etc.. What is harship for someone making $100,000 is not the same as someone making millions. If you have a kid and ever want to see it again, the prenup is worthless and opens everything up to negotiation. People tend not to get married young and not have kids. Basically in Ontario prenups are not airtight by any means.

that's my non-legal understanding of the law here. and JV is crazy.

Funny, because if you do some research Lithuania, along with other post soviet states, have the highest divorces in the world, much higher than in Canada.

Why, might be a harder issue to tackle. Embodying an eastern collectivist culture, even though Lithuania has always been seen as more western, the Soviet Union always placed great emphasis on the family. Some of it was conservatively reinforced during the early Stalin years which ultimately weakened in the 60s. Most it, IMO, came as a result of public provisions provided by the state. The USSR had unprecedented levels of gender equality, education, and healthcare , which all directly and indirectly influenced the status of women in the family and society.

The dissolution of the USSR induced widespread privatization of the very same public services that produced the relatively high gender equality and lower divorce rates. Couple that with all these small Eastern European states getting thrown into the global economy which in turn makes them prefect breeding grounds for human trafficking circles aka the Russian bribes flashing on the side of ur page and the gold digger stigma of Eastern European women yada yada (might be taking that a bit too far).

Hopefully what I'm saying is coming across,

That being said I was raised in a soviet family and expect to harbour similar family values, but I have friends who have grown up in the new post soviet era which are just completely different and embodied very western individualistic values, not that they is anything wrong with that and this is again just my personal experience, but it influences factors like divorce rates and the role of women in society generally speaking.

Yet again I don't know mr valenchewnesss nor his bride on a personal level so who knows where their values lie.

Just my 2cents on a slow offseason

For anyone that wants to beat themselves over the head with whether or not divorce settlements and alimony are fair, we spent 16 pages discussing it a few years back.

I submit a link to a post I made about alimony to hekp yoy find the thread if interested.

Good for JV. Even though many of you say that it will keep him saddled from partying, etc., in Lithuanian forums many tried to link his marriage with the bad stretch JV had in the middle of the season, saying that he spends too much time with his wife, while he should be practicing.
