This is why, I guess, no matter how many police initiatives there are to combat drunk driving through media and other campaigns, you'll still have idiots defending someone's indefensible actions and trying to argue semantics.

I hope nobody trying to justify Jonas' actions here has a license.
Who's here was apologizing for his behaviour or justifying anything?

If he wants this to go on trial or make some deal with the prosecution, the outcome of this charge might not get resolved till a year from now. Im not sure how Collingwood OPP courts are, but in Toronto or York region he would be waiting a long time for a trial date (not the first appearance date).

First appearance dates on almost any arrest are usually 3-5 weeks from date of arrest. Nothing of huge importance gets decided on this day. His lawyer will likely request disclosure on this day, to see exactly what evidence police have against him
Saucage - you know way too much about this. Can't be good.

i have a feeling this is going to ruin the mood and chemistry with this team.

might be the start of a downhill drop...even with JV in the lineup.

i doubt it, having guys like Hayes/Salmons/Klow will keep him focused i believe. This seems like a very supportive group.

I dont think so, JV might be the only one. These guys seem to act like a family, they will probably talk to him about it and let him know what he did and they will move on. They seem like that sort of team.

Why would this news ruin the chemistry in the room? It's not like he killed anyone or was caught with drugs. He committed a stupid act, but nothing that will split a locker room or create a huge distraction.

As Jeff mentioned, there are enough veterans on this team to keep the team and JV focused. The coaching staff and MU will also ensure the team is focused.

DUI charge hurts Valanciunas, not Raptors - Sportsnet.ca

Quote:
First: Jonas Valanciunas will not be suspended for the any portion of the upcoming NBA playoffs.

Second: The Toronto Raptors centre is officially on his chance No.2 after being charged with impaired driving in Wasaga Beach, Ont., early Monday morning. Hopefully he uses it wisely.

He gets a second chance not because he’s as friendly and approachable a professional athlete as we’ve encountered in Toronto or anyone else.

He gets one not because the Toronto Raptors are finally, tantalizingly and surprisingly close to actually doing something meaningful for a city and fan base that has been stepped on for the better part of the last decade.

And he gets one not because being charged with DUI and allegedly having over 80 mg/100 ml of blood is an insignificant matter. It’s a very significant matter. Don’t drive drunk. No excuses. Don’t be this stupid again.

But Valanciunas gets a second chance because if we’re lucky, we all get at least one, and if we’re honest, most of us get all kinds of chances to distance ourselves from our mistakes.

The beauty of being 21 years old and a professional athlete is being 21 and a professional athlete. The downside is that when you do something dumb – not unique to being 21, but perhaps more likely for young men at the start of their 20s than at the beginning of most other decades – you earn yourself a digital tattoo that only time and a lot of dumb-free years will effectively scrub.

Hopefully that’s the only mark that gets left.

The details of the whole thing, which broke around supper hour on Monday, go something like this: The Raptors played in Milwaukee Saturday night, flew home after the game and had two days off to enjoy before returning to practice Tuesday.

Most of the team gathered Sunday afternoon at Rogers Centre where the Raptors had three suites reserved. DeMar DeRozan threw out the first pitch at the Jays-Yankees game and it’s estimated as many as 70 members of the Raptors extended family were on hand – most players; the coaching staff; members of the front office and friends and family.

One of the few players who didn’t go to the game was Valanciunas, who opted to go with his wife and friends to the Georgian Bay beach community about two hours from Toronto. Wasaga has long been a popular getaway for Toronto’s tightly-knit Lithuanian community – there is an international Lithuanian softball tournament there every summer and a Lithuanian church as well.

According to the OPP the charge came at about 2:30 a.m. Monday morning after Valanciunas allegedly went through a drive-thru with open beer bottles in his car. The information was forwarded to police who subsequently tracked down the vehicle, investigated and charged Valanciunas with “exceeding 80 mgs.”

Valanciunas will have a court date in nearby Collingwood on April 22, which will be in the midst of the Raptors first-round playoff series. If the season ended today the Raptors would open the series at home for two games, beginning either April 19 or 20.

However it is all but certain that the court proceedings won’t have any impact on Valanciunas or the Raptors in the playoffs.

A DUI charge is a summary offence which means Valanciunas won’t have to appear in person unless there is a trial. The first appearance on the 22nd will be handled by a lawyer on his behalf and will be merely a formality with the case being adjourned until the defence can get the disclosure from the prosecution and consider their options from there.

These matters are typically fairly slow moving affairs in the Ontario court system, with a trial – should it get to that point – commonly a year past the offence date.

Based on the statement provided by the Raptors from their star second-year big man, Valanciunas certainly sounds like he knows he was in the wrong in the wee hours of Monday morning.

“I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously,” Valanciunas said. “I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them.”

Still, that’s hardly an admission of guilt and depending on the evidence against him Valanciunas may be able to wriggle out of the charge if he chooses to contest it.

Either way, the NBA or the Raptors won’t take any action against him until he either pleads guilty or is convicted. Precedent is for NBA players and coaches guilty of DUI to be hit with a two-game suspension, but that won’t come before next season at the very earliest.

Although this is not a good thing by any means, people predicting that hes going to miss playoff games or that this is damaging to the teams chemistry are looking a little too much into this.

A. Its a DUI charge, he didn't just get caught with an ounce of coke.
B. He has his first court date on April 22....that means he has a court date, to get a court date which will prob be in the next 2-6 months from April. This is the legal system here, it takes 2-6+ months just to go to court for a speeding ticket, you guys are crazy for thinking DUI's are open and closed in a 3 week period.
C. Ruining team chemistry....I think not, again, its a DUI charge, not a drug or assault charge, realistically hes a millionaire, all this is going to do is ding his insanely deep pocketbook for the next 5-10 years...
D. Even if in some magical world where legal matters are open and closed in a 3 week period, do you guys for a second think his lawyer, or the raps organization would allow him to miss games during the playoffs...man, I know we live in good old Canada but guys, its time to think threw this logically....please

We live in a 24 hour news cycle. JV will continue to play well and this unfortunate situation will go away, quickly if the Raps have success in the first round of the playoffs or Valanciunas in particular. This is the reality folks...

Not surprised at all, first worst decision of his life was to marry that lithuanian b1tch. As some1 said he was driving in Lithuania without driving license.

Man this picture of Keon Clark going to prison almost brought tears to my eyes. I remember both Hakeem Olujan and Lenny Willkins talking about him and how talented was Keon that he could be one of the top centers in the league.

Haven't had a chance to read every post in this thread but based on what I've read as far as the facts are concerned I've got two comments.

1. It's really disappointing to see that he would put himself in this position. I've got no time for drinking and driving. I'm sure that the organization has been frequently in his ear about preventing this kind of thing. It's really too bad that he didn't just decide to stay in TO and enjoy the Jays game with the rest of the team. It's not like it's the all-star break. It's two days off before the final 5 games of the season and you're fighting for important seeding.

2. From the report on ESPN it sounds like he went through the drive thru, the workers saw open beer bottles and called the cops, and the cops found the car at a house and then arrested Jonas. If he wasn't behind the wheel when they showed up to the house it's very doubtful that he'll be convicted or even that the case will proceed to trial.

JV is an absolute fucking idiot. I laugh at anyone here trying to defend the guy saying "he is only 21, every young person makes mistakes." Sorry, not every young person is fucking stupid enough to put not only their own life in danger by driving drunk, but also other people. I'm happy he is getting suspended 2 games and he better get his head out of his ass.

I don't know if that is an attempt to defend him. It is my hope that it was just a stupid mistake. Doesn't make it any less stupid.

this will get thrown out.
there is absolutely no proof, and nothing to really charge him on.

police charged him at his house - under the suspicion of DUI. he wasnt pulled over, he didnt blow over. he was charged because the drive-thru workers saw opened beer bottles in the car he was driving.
really?
there is nothing here that they could convict him with.
