Neither has any effect crossing the border (DUI is not a violent crime) but one is a criminal offence and gives you a criminal record while the other is statutory and results in only a fine and increased insurance premiums.

It doesn't matter if it's a violent crime or not. You need a trp if you want to cross the border without any risk of being held back. There has been a tightening up of border crossings under Harper. And DUIs are seen strongly as something that will restrict entrance. Good to know about the difference though.

Harper has nothing to do with entry to the states and the type of crime very much matters. It would be extremely rare for an individual to be denied entry to the us from canada because of a DUI. It's much more difficult if you've been convicted of fraud, assault, etc.

I was talking about entry to Canada. Jonas would be leaving the country. And you aren't going to get into the US if you got busted for a joint 30 years ago. If you have a criminal record it is entirely at the discretion of the immigration officer, and the war on drugs makes entry very difficult now.

They are not going to deny JV entry. He's an NBA player, that means money.

They make exceptions if you are a part of bringing money into the economy.

What I don't understand, if your going to be dumb enough to get married at such a young age, at least take advantage of one of the few perks ... Get her to fucking drive !!

He clearly is still a kid with little worldly experience and married ... nice mix. ... He made a mistake. With his cash ... could of had a driver take him there.

Why are we talking about a joint now?

Jonas isn't getting denied entry to the US or re-entry to Canada because of a DUI charge. Even if he gets convicted he's not going to be denied entry or re-entry.

OMG just like in that show border security...there gonna deny him. Looks like Jonas will now have to forfeit his career in the NBA and go back to Europe to play basketball. END THREAD.

Out of mercy to the readers and before Jonas is implicated in some terrorist plot and we are subjected to him doing the perp-walk.

Why am i talking about a joint? Because you said non-violent crimes will not get you refused entry in the US. That simply is not true. Jonas is going to be denoed as well if he is convicted and doesn't get the paperwork done. Nowhere did i say he was completely fucked. You can get a pardon for a drug charge and enter the US. You can get a trp and enter Canada. A lot of it is a stupid money grab as well as some chest-pounding back and forth between the two countries. But it is very real, and backed up by a shitload of homeland security money spent on databases that get tapped into every time we cross the border. And it would be a bit of a pain in the ass that would need to be dealt with. Saying it won't need to be dealt with won't make it so. If George Bush has to deal with it then Jonas Valanciunas surely will as well.

You guys are sick non of you made mistakes all of you are perfect. How easy is to judge somebody on Internet hiding your name. You don't care that JV is playing for Toronto just fire him and send him to Europa.

I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that we are all judging him, and thus being so ready to judge all of us uniformly yourself, as sick nonetheless. How about you get off of internet message boards if you have such a tainted view of them? We'll gladly cheer on Jonas thanks. He doesn't want to be in europa.

I had a floormate who quite recently got deported from Canada back to Russia for a DUI or DWI (don't remember which) in New York. He was trying to get his citizenship but was denied for that reason. Jonas might come into some problems getting his citizenship if he wants it (though I really doubt it considering he's a celebrity and rich), but he won't have any problems crossing the border. Funny thing about my floormate was he didn't want to go back to shitty Russia, so he went to Ukraine, and then shit hit the fan.

was he a resident? He can't apply for a citizenship without residency as far as I know, and they won't kick you out if you are a resident, at least not for DUI. If he was applying for permanent residency, it's possibly they rejected his application for that reason though.

It was a stupid mistake and he gave everyone the reason to talk about it. Nobody wants JV gone, but there is no reason no one can call him for the mistake he made. He is a NBA player, this is what happens when you do something dumb. And honestly, I would call anyone stupid for drinking and driving/

Nobody is calling JV a bad person. Just someone who made a dumb mistake, we all make mistakes. We are all judge from it, just like JV will be, but it a bigger spotlight since he is a NBA player.
