Default Johnson symbolizes Raptors change

Seems like everyone was able to get an interview with James Johnson yesterday.

Quote:
Casey will not overwhelm Johnson with 30-plus minutes every night. The coach has not yet settled on a starting five, and he mentioned he might play Johnson at power forward in the right situation. But work ethic and commitment — in games and practices — will be factors.

“I’m never going to be totally satisfied because there is such a long way to go. We have 65 more [games],” Casey said. “We’ve got to put our work boots and hard hats on and work, because playing hard is a habit. And we’re not where we need to be yet.”

Johnson recognizes he has to put the work in for the team’s benefit as much as his own. The errors bother him because he knows it hurts the Raptors’ development, and could lessen the coaches’ confidence in him.

“Defensive stoppage is one of the things that is on my role card, so I’m going to do the best I can to fulfill that,” he said. “I know I can score but, right now, that is not asked of me, and you have to do what is asked of you if you want to play. And, of course, everybody wants to play.”

NinjaRaptor appears to have a better head on his shoulders than most NBA dudes. Glad we've got him.

johnson's a goof that needs to quit trying to do so much on the offensive end but i'm kind of shocked that he's not starting and overwhelmed with 30+ a night givin that butler is the other option and the so called defensive mindset of casey. He's definitely bringing it on d, love the blocks and boards from a wing even if he can't shoot. Now that i think about it maybe johnson and Bargnani should switch positions

Johnson the Hedgehog doesn't even need to shoot with shooters like Bargs and Caldy... DeRozan... and Amir getting easy buckets courtesy of Jose

This is true but 4 on 5 offense is much harder to play than 5 on 5

only takes 1 player to score a basket but you need all 5 to play D

how about johnson stays back near his own rim on defence and Bargnani cherry picks for open layins never leaving the offensive end.

con's: 4-5 on offence-defence

pro's: always got a man back on D(no clear path fouls, makes it harder for teams to run), open layup or three pointer any time the raps rebound the ball and throw it up court, more rest, league would not know how to react when the raps win the title

I was struck by how Casey threw out the idea of JJ playing the 4 once Kleiza comes back. Like we don't have enough 4's. I smell a trade or two.

it's a shame that he's one of the worst offensive players in the league

I still believe he can be a double digit scorer on this team.

JayJay got hops. The guy impresses me on the defensive end. HIm and Amir Johnson.
Looking forward to see how this season unfolds.
Why is rasual butler getting so many minutes. I am not impressed.

He could be a guy that gets some scoring done off of defense. They are going to need to work on the fast break a little bit though, if last night is any indication of those abilities.

fast break opportunities maybe, he can't even put the ball on the floor without travelling

his d has been great though, and we do have some scorers so he's worthy of starters minutes, especially considering who he's in competition with to get minutes at SF

i can sense that casey is preparing johnson to be the backup of kleiza. because coming of the bench he give us an advantage on D.
when you have a strong defender coming of the bench who can play sg/sf/pf on defense, why not start a more scoring one.

i love JJ. je is really what we miss this last year, especially two season ago. coming of the bench behind turk would have been better for our team. whatever, the past is thepast, but he is a stud. if he continues to put number on defense (rbd + blk + st) he would become one of the best defensive player in the league. he can still learn how to shoot. it's the only thing he lacks. he is athletic, a solid passer, a very good defender. if he can shoot he will become a wallace-like. and he want to be here. that a solid + for us and him.

Am I the only one who thinks he is a bit of a bonehead?? And not just because of the last defensive possession yesterday, but he is a habitual brain-farter. Part of who he is, is making silly mistakes. I guess you can live with that off the bench if the effort is there.

Agreed. I think that JJ would fit nicely into the starting lineup given that Bargs, DD and Jose can all score the ball.

Butler would be better as "instant offense" off the bench.

Maybe Casey is waiting until he stops turning it over so much?
