Joel Anthony:Players love visiting Toronto but have some concerns

Taxes, weather? Really....still?

Quote:
Q: Toronto has been hammered by both Bosh and Tom 'Magnum PI' Sellick in recent days. What's the perception of Toronto or Canada for that matter amongst NBA teammates and colleagues?

A: A lot of guys I know in the league really like visiting Toronto. For some there's still a concern about taxes, the weather and the currency change. Some find having to go through customs constantly is a real pain. Its just a matter of educating players more about the country and the city.
Quote:
Qo other players tease you about being Canadian?

A:I lost my 'Eh's' when I was younger so a lot of guys are surprised when they find out I'm Canadian. I used to defend Canada a lot when I was younger. I'm very proud to be Canadian.

Selleck wasn't dissing toronto. He was saying how his new show is based in new york city and shooting in toronto is gonna look different than new york city.
Also the customs thing makes no sense to me. It takes them a grand total of 3 minutes to get through... Sigh

Anyone who knows anything knows Tom Selleck is awesome, but then again you don't really know anything, so I shouldn't be surprised.

Sure this is dissapointing, but is it really shocking or even news worthy?

NBA players are regular guys. They talk amonst themselves. They hear things here and there. They are no smarter that the regular American joe. Somehow this TAXES stereotype got out some years back and it has stuck. See the thing is most players don't really give any thought to playing in toronto because it's 1 city in 30 and it's a team that american kids just don't dream about playing for. i.e. they don't care. Just like you and i don't care about the tax situation in Tenessee. and therein lies the core of the problem. Not caring.

Don't expect things to change. and honestly i don't really care!

I actually understand the Customs thing. Whenever I have taken a domestic flight in the US, it seems so easy.

Here's a question, has anyone from this organization ever gone on ESPN or TNT and had a serious interview about what it is to play in Toronto, possibly to dispell myths? I would love to see Colangelo do an in depth interview and discuss the misconceptions on taxes, weather (the fact that the weather isn't much colder them half the other cities in the NBA), customs and how that's overblown and takes little time and no effort to do and what ever other Bullshit misconceptions there are. Address it all and move on from there, but nobody says fuck all and nobody adresses any of this so the organization imo is to blame to a big degree for not at least trying to set the record straight.

They Raps have a package they hand out to players and agents detailing exactly what they need to know.

No need to go on ESPN and whine.

And again, it comes down to winning. No one wants to play for a loser unless it's all about the money (see: Turkoglu, Hedo).

Desperate? How are things going now with all this bullshit being said and the american media constantly running off at the mouth with half truths and misconceptions. Maybe you talk to the league about televising a Raptor game (vs miami?) And say the you want a serious interview at halftime? It has to be addressed or it'll just get worse. There are ways of doing it without appearing desperate.

its the socialist thing that Canada has and thats why they think you have to give 90% of your paycheck to the commie government (communism and socialism is the same thing)
little do they know, NYC, Cali and Mass are just as socialist

Whining? Isn't that what we constantly do about this subject? Fans constantly emailing guys like Hollinger about this shit and the Raptors boards are filled with people whining about it.

maybe, but Colangelo going on ESPN for a special about how great toronto is and how we've been all the stereotypes are untrue would seem desperate and nationally televising a game here or there won't do anything.

Basically the only way to solve this 'problem' (not that i even think it's a big deal because i don't care remember) is to have guys like Joel Anthony and other dudes that have come through the Raptors just casually dispell the stereotypes to their NBA counterparts... ya and winning would be nice too.

Like I said there are ways of doing it where it's not all about look at us, and being all desperate. The interview could be discusing a bunch of shit, including the current state of the team and where the team wants to go in the future. GM's do interviews all the time people. When was the last time one of our GM's had an interview on ESPN. IMO now would be the time to do it with everything going on.
