Default Joe Johnson

Can we get him next year?

If we can sign-trade Bosh and get some type of Center (Biedrins? Noah?), would you go after Super Joe?

Would he come to Toronto?
Would he be a good fit?
Is he a max contract player?

I personally love his game, and with Hedo, Jose, and him all on the court I can see the Raptors leading the league in assists.

Any comments?

we can only trade for players, and frankly, other than PG, can't see what Atlanta would want in return from us. They might do a Josh Smith for Bosh, but considering the difference in salaries, even that might be unlikely.

not necessarily, if Bosh just ups and leaves - so does his 10+ million a year salary. so we'd effectively have 10+ million free cap space to spend on any FA's.

Hoopshype says Bosh has a 17million+ player option for next season.

Is that true?

So if he declines his player option, we'll actually be sitting around 47 million.

That includes Amir, Wright, O'Bryant and Rasho coming off the books.

Take a look at the current and future salaries here:

ShamSports.com: Toronto Raptors salary information

Yes, Bosh's player option would give him $17,000,000, but he almost certainly will opt out.

Will the Raptors have a lot of money to spend if he doesn't re-sign (or doesn't sign-and-trade)? Not likely. The projected cap for 2010-2011 is around $53,000,000. Without Bosh, the Raptors have around $47,000,000 committed in salaries for next year. That would leave them with $6,000,000 to spend. Not only would they need to replace Bosh, but also Amir Johnson, Rasho Nesterovic, Antoine Wright, and Patrick O'Bryant. Suppose that they re-sign all these players using Bird Rights; that would leave the Raptors with only the MLE to spend on a free-agent. The MLE is going to be around $5,000,000.

In other words, if Bosh leaves via free agency, they have no chance of signing a talent even remotely at his level. This is why BC has been saying again and again that Bosh should work through the Raptors to get his deal done, no matter who it is with, because it is mutually beneficial: Raptors would get players in return, and Bosh would get more money (10% raises instead of 8% and 6 year deal instead of 5).

At least if we make the playoffs we won't have a 1st round draft pick coming aboard to take up salary.

Yes, a fine point, Acie. Suppose a pick from 15-20. You're looking at another $1,000,000 at least that goes to the pick that would come out of the cap space. So maximum of probably $5,000,000 they can spend to replace Bosh.

Did I just read the OP suggesting we trade Bosh for Noah or Biedrins?

blah blah blah.

I'm tired of hearing what teams can or "cannot" spend.

The MLSE can spend whatever they want. Period.

I'm tired of being told what they CAN or CAN'T spend.

It's more what they WILL or WON'T spend.

They could sign Bosh to a max, keep all thier guys, go out and sign Lebron and Brad Miller and STILL be at a respectable NBA salary not hat much worse than the top salaries now.

You wanna win.

Spend some cash.

no you can't.

you can't sign free agents when you are already over the cap without exceptions. nice try though.

i'd love to hear it. i suppose you would be in the running for the gm job of any team if you have a way to circumvent the collective bargaining agreement.

I see what you are saying, but if Joe Johnson wants to leave 100% I'm sure Atlanta would be respectful enough to s&t him. We have some talent they might be interested in...a young player like DeRozan might be appealing, also if Belinelli has a solid season he could become attractive for them. Did you honestly think we'd get a s&t from Orlando?? The trade exception could be very useful for Atlanta as well...

Not saying they'd do it, but it could work.

I wanna hear SJ's plan too. Cuz unless we do a Boston Celtic type move for KG the did... there's no way of your plan.

Simply impossible.

If they don't re-sign Bosh, they'll only have $5,000,000 to spend, per the CBA and cap rules. If they re-sign Bosh (or sign-and-trade him), they'll only be able to spend $5,000,000 to acquire a new player with the Mid-Level Exception. Pretty cut and dry in this case.

Suppose, though, that they could break rules in the CBA, and that they could go out and sign LBJ and Brad Miller after re-signing every current Raptor (although why you chose Miller, I have no idea). The end result would be a total salary of 85-90 million dollars, which is at least 20 million over the projected luxury tax mark. Not only would MLSE then have to pay an additional $20,000,000 in penalties (since penalties match the amount you're over the luxury tax, dollar for dollar), they would also forego the revenue sharing program. MLSE is an investment, with Teachers (for example) expecting a decent return, and you would have a damned hard time convincing them that blowing 100-110 million dollars in addition to foregoing revenue sharing would be a worthwhile investment for a basketball team in a hockey city.
