After seeing how this team played in the pre-season have your expectations gotten greater stayed the same or worsened. In other words, after your initial thoughts on the trade 3 months ago, after pre-season,what are you expecting?

I thought that with proper coaching, the trade would improve the teams success by about 5 wins, pushing win total betwee 48-52 and almost guaranteeing at least a second round birth/ecf appearance.

Opinion is still the same.

Initially I was optimistic. JO is definitely an upgrade on Rasho, if he stays healthy. Plus, it was great to get something in return for TJ's contract. Given his history of injury and the way he handled coming off the bench, it might well have been the best trade that was available.

Still, I can't help but think that if it were possible to make a trade that allowed us to:

1) Keep Rasho for when Bargs is slumping and Hump is out of control.

2) Get some help at 2 or 3, a slashing type ideally. If we didn't have JO I think we'd have cap space to sign Delfino... I'm not so sure about that though.

I picked worsened, because, well, the honeymoon is over now, and I've come to the realization that JO has to show that he's not just an upgrade on Rasho, but that he can produce enough to compensate for the loss of Delfino.

My stand on this...

When the trade happened, I was pretty happy about it.
I thought we'd improve significantly even if JO wasn't as good as he was.
But after seeing the pre-season, I DON'T WANNA SAY I'M WORRIED, but there's an uneasy feeling.

The thing here is... this is the first time I actually watched pre-season games.
And from all the previous seasons based on stats and records, pre-season was definitely a non-factor and showed no sign of the actual upcoming regular season.

So yes, my expectations have worsened, but I'd say I'm still optimistic.
SO MANY THINGS COULD HAPPEN STILL!
JO could suck for the first 10 games, then all of a sudden become a big factor.
I'm just very very excited for everything to start.

I have hard time to evaluate JO's impact since he didn't even try to play too hard on preseason games. I need 10 season games at least to say for sure how JO is going to impact the overall Raptors game. I still have high hopes Raptors is going to be better than last season.

Basing any kind of opinion on pre-season games is craziness. And in this case, even 10 games might not allow for a fair assessment, but it should provide at least some idea of what the guy can bring to this team.

Worsened, though not because of JO's play. Was just reminded of a lot of the issues this team has... it's a bitch watching the defensive and team work ethic masterclass the Celts put on last year and then seeing our team and going "oh yeah... same old Raptors"

i dont think ten is enough with a group coached by smitch. they've been wildly inconsistent, and a 10 and 0 start, despite how awesome, doesn't guarantee those few 3-5 game losing streaks that are bound to happen down the line.

When this trade happened I was happy, but now thinking about it I would have done a trade to get a wing player

It's not the trade. Losing Rasho but gaining Jermaine made us better. Losing TJ got rid of our problem. Everything's good.
Until Delfino left, and no one as good as TJ was replaced with.

Pre-Season means nothing... to vetern players and teams that already know how to win and have had the same core of players for awhile.... altho i dont think the sky is falling, to dismiss this as nothing is the opposite, we need this team to gel and we need guys to get in shape, thats what these games are all about, not wins and losses, so plz dont tell me it means nothing.

Pre-season record means nothing. I don't see how the way in which those wins or losses occur is completely irrelevant though. Indeed, not much attention should be paid to how veterans play (as Smitch pointed out). Aside from Bosh, Jose, and JO, attention should be paid to how everyone else played. For everyone else the pre-season was an audition for a spot in the starting lineup, or increased minutes off the bench.

Its not the end of the world but anyone who isn't worried about how Moon, Solomon, Kapono etc. played is crazy. Some posters on this forum (I'm sorry I can't remember who) pointed out that last pre-seasons sets from Mitchell were a preview of what he ran in the regular season. If that is the case this pre-season then there is another and perhaps paramount point of concern for this team.

With proper management this roster is capable of finishing 3-4th in the conference. After the JO trade I was hoping that there was enough talent added to overcome any of Smitch's deficiencies as a coach. That may have been too optimistic of an opinion, I think even if we get the all-star JO back this team has some serious problems.

normally nobody cares about how veterans play in pre-season. With O'Neal however, because of the injury concerns, fans were very anxious to see him. For me it was enough what I've seen against the Lakers. 100% or not, he still has it in him to be a defensive force. That's all I needed to know frankly.

We definitely got better.

Did you guys watch only Raptors preseason games or other teams too? Jermaine is 30 years old. Young pups go hard in the preseason because they are fighting for minutes. Vets use it both for conditioning and to try new stuff. When Jermaine applied himself in his limited ~20 mins per game in the preseason, he got fouled and sent to the line pretty much at will, and snagged some pretty nice rebounds in traffic. He was basically figuring out how to space himself on the court with Chris Bosh, and playing to not get hurt.

What you need to look for in the preseason is not scoring averages, etc., it's signs of improvement or drop off.

Guys like Thad Young, Lou Williams, etc. all showed signs of very nice improvement. Nene finally looks healthy. Jermaine looks like he's mostly in shape, a little bit rusty, but not just a shadow of his former self like before. (Last season was an aberration for Jermaine). He'll be fine.

Elton Brand, for all his talk, looked great in one game, and terrible in about 5. So, we'll see just how well his injuries hold up this season as well.

To be honest though, knowing what you know now, would you rather have

JO

or

Gerald Wallace
Rasho, who would also have value as an expiring
Roy Hibbert or a drafted SG

I dunno, I can't help but feel a lineup of

Jose/Ukic or Solomon
Parker/Kapono
Wallace/Moon
Bosh/Bargnani
Rasho/Hibbert or Bargnani if we drafted a wing

Would've been better than what we ended with. If Hibbert turned into a solid defensive center, he'd be exactly what we need beside Bosh for the future, and obviously Wallace is a very good and still young two way SF. But whatever, you know.
