Default JO - the negative

I know, I know, it's early, so let's call this post "an early negative" then...

The guy is slow. Could be his rust, could be his knee not being a 100% after all, but the ball stops moving when it gets to him on offence - what's up with that?

Also, his rebounding positioning at both ends worries me - he is slow to the loose balls too. Some of his post moves were very nice, but most of the time he is forcing the issue in the post - why? Does he feel that he HAS to get off a certain number of shots? It's not like the rest of the team offence was smooth, but he sticks out like a sore thumb, at least to me.

I hope these are the signs of someone who is getting familiar with the new teammates. I mean, it's not like Bosh was overly impressive during the pre-season either, but at least he didn't get those early fouls every single game.

For me there are two signs. Hes not getting many minutes and his vertical is not what it could be. Other than that, its all good. Against Lakers and Bynum his motivation was better, some nice moves. Im not worried that he shoots too much

Keep in mind, this is what he is.

He never was all that fast.

his hops were better, but hopefully they comeback.

Grass is always greener, usually once you get a guy, you learn thaqt he is more than the 20+ he used to drop on your team, now, you see all the other things his old team hated too!

I think people should really wait until mid season, or at least a quarter of the way in before starting to evaluate his performance. Even if you believe the all-star JO is going to come back, there is no way anyone could expect him to get back into that kind form this early into the (pre) season. Its all good that he's been working his ass off this summer but I'm pretty sure there is only one way to get into NBA game shape and it is by logging lots of minutes in NBA games. After two years pretty much out of the league I think he can buy at least 40 games to get back into things. Hell, he can have 82, I don't really care how long it takes him to shake off the rust as long as he can be dominant in time for the playoffs.

As long as he keeps going strong to the rim or taking the wide open 15 footer I'm perfectly fine with his offence as hes kept it simple for the most part and is shooting well and getting to the line because of it. I love how he gets position on the break and forces the foul or gets the easy layup. He hasnt taken nearly as many bad shots/fadeaways as Ive seen him do in years past. I am very impressed with his offence.

I too have noticed hes a little slow to the ball on the rebounds, but thatll come as he keeps playing more mins. His rotations are beautiful and he challenges everything, if he misses a couple of boards at the start of the year it shouldnt be a big deal if hes there on rotations as long as Moon is starting and both Moon and Bosh continue to go to the boards until JO is fully up and running.

You can already see the difference and as long as he stays healthy and Jose BECOMES that next level PG we should win a round this year.

I agree with most others in that I think its still an issue of him getting back into the swing of things. JO was still the best option out there for us over this past summer and if it doesn't work, well then we deal with it until the end of next season and think about the cost relief when his contract come off the books.

Maybe it doesn't bother me as much because I still don't see us as a team that can (or should) be taken seriously. We have too many other voids to fill (lack of depth, SF or SG, etc.) before we can be one of those teams that's mentioned in the same sentence as the Lakers, Celtics and Spurs.

After watching the game vs. Lakers, I'd agree with "not to be taken seriously" comment.

Jermaine O Neal luckily for us is still at least a shade of what his former all-star self was. He isn't afraid to bang with the big boys and this tells me that he is actually feeling confident about his knees. He goes up for blocks almost everytime someone coems into the lane to hit a close bucket. Hes still a very valuable piece to the team and I think come the regular season he will be very very ready.
