Exclamation Jermaine: Trade To Toronto A "New Start"

Started another O'Neal thread because the other one was getting pretty long.

Anyhow, Jermaine has now addressed the trade:

Quote:
Jermaine O’Neal confirmed today that the Indiana Pacers have agreed to a trade that will send him to the Toronto Raptors in return for point guard T.J. Ford, center Rasho Nesterovic, forward Maceo Baston and Toronto’s first-round pick (No. 17) in tonight’s NBA draft.

“I met so many different people around (Indianapolis) in my eight years and they allowed me to (become) a perennial All-Star,” O’Neal said in a phone interview. “It was a hard decision, but I understand it was the best decision for the team and myself. Sometimes when you’re at a particular place for so long and it doesn’t go right, you need a new start.”

The deal has been agreed upon pending all the players passing physicals. It can’t be finalized until July 9, after the league’s mandatory moratorium period ends and Ford’s base-year compensation tag comes off the books.

O’Neal, 29, said he knew he needed a fresh start two or three years go and that the franchise’s off-the-court problems took a toll on him.

“It stopped being about basketball and it really wore me down,” the six-time All-Star forward said. “It’s hard to go from being on the cusp of winning a championship to coming down and not making the playoffs. It was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be.”

O’Neal said when he’s done playing, he plans to retire as a Pacer.

I think it means that he'll look to sign a one day deal so that he can officially retire as a member of the Pacers.

i think Mike knew what it literally meant. I think he was just questioning the comment as it may appear as though JO still has his heart with the Pacers even though he is now a member of another team. I question the comment myself a bit.

However, i agree with Doc in the reasoning that JO wants to make this as amicable a split from the Pacers as he can.

Don't burn your bridges, kids.

I think it means that he plans to wear the Pacers jersey when he is inducted into the hall of fame. Never short on confidence, this Mr. O'Neal.

He came right out of high school and spent eight years there. He basically grew into a man there. I see nothing wrong with his comment.

Either way if he wins a championship here he may change his mind on what press room he wants to announce his retirement.

Before we worry about a ring, lets wait and see if he'll be healthy enough to contribute anything

He will be. People need to stop dwelling on the past. He had the surgery six months ago, he came back and finished the season and he's already attending camps to prepare for next season.

I think JO will be a 15-10 guy that will help Chris Bosh with the scoring load> The only reason I am saying this is because I think he is fully recovered from his injury.

It's not living in the past! It's living without blinders on. Or as i call it now, cautiously optomistic. And heaven forbid someone brings it up.It was funny ,in the NJ/Bucks thread someone said NJ did well if Bobby Simmons can stay healthy. No one batted an eye. Say the same about Oneil and it's war. LOL

I'm looking forward to the season though because i want to see this team play together.Should be great!!

Here's a better article from CNNSI regarding Jermaine and his thoughts of coming to player with us.

Quote:
O'Neal confirmed the trade Thursday, saying he was pleased with the move by team president Larry Bird.

"He wanted to get me to a place where I could contend and do what I'm capable of doing," O'Neal told The Associated Press. "We both agreed that the timing was perfect. His focus on getting them [the Pacers] to a level where they can grow and start to be competitive was tremendous."
O'Neal wasn't surprised by the trade.

"I knew last year that this time would be coming," he said.
Pacers spokesman David Benner said he could not confirm the trade.
"We're stuck in our role here, the players can say whatever they want, we can't say anything," Benner said.

Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo told The Canadian Press on Wednesday that he was in the midst of "four or five" conversations with teams involving Ford and a combination of Toronto's No. 17 pick and/or other Raptors players leading up to Thursday night's draft.

A deal can't be finalized until July 1, when Ford's base-year compensation tag comes off the books.

O'Neal said he took his physical Wednesday, but he wasn't sure if Ford had finished his.

O'Neal, who will turn 30 before entering his 13th season, has a contract paying him more than $44 million over the next two seasons. He will be a part of a powerhouse front line with All-Star forward Chris Bosh.

"I think playing alongside Chris Bosh gives us a different dynamic," O'Neal said. "You look at teams in the NBA, you look at their low-post players, and they always have one good player, and when that good player goes out, you can change your defense a little bit and load up on other areas. Even with us starting out the games together, one of us will always be on the floor. You won't get a chance to adjust your defense."

That's one of the main reasons he believes the Raptors can contend for an NBA title next season.

"You're talking about a team that's extremely athletic, extremely big at the wing positions, and they play defense," O'Neal said. "With my defensive mentality and ability to change the game and Chris' ability to block shots and change the game -- it's exciting."

Wow! It's nice to see he's that pumped. I don't know how accurate his analysis of the team is, but if he can get some chemistry going with Bosh, then wowoowow!

Yeah, the "coming to a team that will contend for the NBA championship" is a little far fetched, but optimistic. I just think of it as baby steps.

Not to nitpick, but he spent first 3 years out of high-school on the bench in Portland behind Sabonis and Wallace before being traded to Indy for Dale Davis.

I really hope his heart is in Toronto now and his latest comments appear to support this.

he's a veteran who really wants a title. It's a very good combination - he's probably at the point where he doesn't care about stats and money all that much. If he
s healthy next April and May, we have a good chance of making some serious noise in the east.

He wont be getting a title unless we trade A.B for something like McGrady ?

I don't see the rockets moving T-Mac for Bargnani and the Raptors don't really have the contract fillers to make it work.
