Jay Triano: We need Belinelli to be key player off the bench

Quote:
We were discussing Marco Belinelli in a scrum with Jay yesterday afternoon while the struggling backup swingman was over on the other side of the gym getting in some extra shooting.

In the course of that discussion, Jay hit on a very key point when it was pointed out to him that they desperately need Belinelli to find his stroke, and quickly.

“We need him to be a key because we don’t have a lot of points in that second unit.”

He’s exactly right, of course. Jarrett Jack’s probably going to score a little bit and you have to think Antoine Wright’s going to get better offensively as he gets more used to playing at game speed but after that, what?

Rasho and Amir Johnson? Methinks not.

And that’s why Jay’s been saying one of his goals in his rotation, barring foul trouble and injury that is, is to have two of his four main guys – Calderon, Turkoglu, Bosh and Bargnani – on the floor at all times.

It’ll be interesting to see if he’s able to accomplish that goal because having five non-starters on the court at the same time isn’t the greatest of ideas.

So much for Weems being a big contributor this year eh?

Then again I think this is for the best - Beli is still young and has a good feel for the game offensively - when he's not chucking off-balance 3's that is!

I dont think anyone actually thought Weems was going to be a rotation player, the Boston game should have fully put that to rest. I think people should be happy we have an athletic young guy like him at the end of our bench instead of old cows who cant play a lick anymore.

And Marco should be a good offensive spark off the bench if he plays within himself. But thats the key, he shouldnt go out there thinking hes Ginobili.

I agree thriller, I'd be happier knowing he planned to stop fading 6 feet on every jumper.

Yes we do. He can be a good volume scorer. He can provide a lot of scoring of the bench which will help us out a lot

Triano should find a way to get Weems around 10 mins a game off the bench. He's not afraid to take it to the basket (the Raps really need that), super athletic and brings energy to the game. Plus, from what i seen he's just as good, if not better than Belinelli on D.

But for sure Belinelli needs to step his game up and be that scoring punch off the bench that the Raps desperately need.

Raptors are at a HUGE disadvantage with Weems on the floor because he cant do ANYTHING on offence. He cant dribble, shoot, or even go to the off glass. The guy is a scrub right now, even though he may be able to defend, hes a huge liability on the offensive side of the floor and we'd be playing 4 on 5 out there with him in the lineup.

If youre a swingman coming off the bench you better be able to at least make a 3, or you better be a damn good defensive player. Even a guy like Dominic Mcguire whos a beast on the boards and very good defender for the Wiz doesnt play much because hes a liability on offence. You cant really play guys like that anymore in todays NBA,.

But really, Weems isnt even on the level of a guy like Mcguire. Theres athletic, and then theres athletic that can actually play. Weems hasnt reached that point yet.
