Jawai getting some love...
Found this on Hoopsworld. They were discussing the top ten summer league steals and Jawai made it on the list.

#41 Nathan Jawai, Toronto Raptors (via Indiana Pacers)
Nathan Jawai earned the nickname "Baby Shaq" in Australia but it's tough for a moniker like that to stick in the NBA. The 6-10, 280 pound Aussie knows he has his work cut out for him overseas so he hit the gym to learn from the best. Jawai worked out at Joe Abunassar's Impact Basketball with teammate Jermaine O'Neal this summer and showed his determination to improve. He averaged 10.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games, and although he struggled from the free throw line (53.8% FT), he has the focus to make that wrong a right. Jawai doesn't have to be "Baby Shaq" to be successful, being himself just could be good enough.

There no doubt the potential is there. I just think it'll come down to his fitness and can or will he be in NBA game shape next season to contribute here? :conufsed2:

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I don't think the sample size was large enough to crown him one of the best in the summer league. But hey, it's the summer, we'll take it.

I think he'll look good in a suit.

Apollo 07-25-2008 11:24 AM

I think its going to take him a few years. This is summer league, not real games. All expectations should be thrown out the window because he's going to need some time to get used to the speed of the NBA game and he's going to have to learn what he can and cannot get away with.

Baby Shaq, I like it!!

But it's an oxymoron :haha:

I watched him a bit vs. LA and wasn't impressed at all. Mind you, it's a summer league, the guards hardly passed the ball on offence, but he was beat on defence a couple of times and he was consistently out of position for defensive rebounds.

He is huge, though, and very mobile. The key for him would be a lot of practice against real NBA players, and spending some time with JO and Bargs in Vegas should do wonders.

I just watched this guys Summer league highlights.

I think we got a bit of a player on our hands. He's got the shit you can't teach already. A nose for the rim, and great feet.

A lot of guys are talking about how he has no experience....true, but if he keeps playing well, does it matter? And he's a big boy!!!

Apollo 07-26-2008 02:17 PM

As long as he comes in, rebounds, hustles and guards guys effectively down low I'll be happy.

Superjudge 07-26-2008 02:30 PM

he may do more than that, thats what I like. He's a nimble, and coordinated big man.

Major 07-26-2008 11:16 PM

Whatever. How often do you see a player that's eventually supposed to be a 300 pound 7 footer by the time his prime comes? Not a lot. This guy is very unique and you can never say no to 290 lbs at 20-whatever years old. He'll be great. He's Shaq!!!!

Apollo 07-27-2008 01:29 AM

LOL, come on now, his size won't determine if he'll be a good player. Ask Shawn Bradley about that.

Major 07-27-2008 11:57 AM

I never said anything about how a size determines exactly how good a player is. I said it's pretty rare to see a guy like Jawai or Shaq come to the NBA. We should give him a chance. Look at Shaq, can't even shoot a foul shot if it depended on his life. He's still a huge force in the league, why? Because he's so damn big!!

Acie 07-27-2008 01:16 PM

I watched the Summer League stuff.

IMO Jawai is really, really raw. I think Mike mentioned it somewhere too, but he was out of postion all the time and at times seemed allergic to rebounding. His low post game also looked pretty bad...
