Question Jawai: End of Month or Next Season?

Hmmmm .... not too sure what the deal is. Nathan feels he'll be good to go at the end of this month, but apparently Doug Smith is under the impression that he won't see the court until next season.

Mentor Aaron Fearne thought the 22-year-old would take about a month to regain full fitness, something he has had to try to do on the run with few formal full-team training sessions programmed during the packed NBA schedule.

"Probably it’s the end of the month but who knows?" Jawai said of his NBA debut.

But Toronto Star basketball reporter Doug Smith, in his Raptors blog, responded to a reader’s question on Jawai’s fitness, saying the former Taipan may not even play this season.

"He’s still at least a couple of weeks away from being in top shape and, I’d guess, months away from being able to actually play in a game," Smith said on his blog site.

"He is, after all, a 22-year-old rookie who’s played a grand total of about 30 games in Australia as a pro. To think he'd do anything this season is a stretch and, with what they’re getting out of Jake Voskuhl, they can afford to wait on Nate til next year."

Nathan who???

I mean, who honestly thought that he would be a contributor to our team when he was a throw in to get O'neal.

I've never really seen his game, hell, I didn't even know they played basketball down under, but I don't see him staying in the league very long.

^If you've never seen him play than what are you backing up the statement "but I don't see him staying in the league very long" with?

I must give them the heads up in Australia about Doug. He is not always on the money with these things. But then again who is. I hope Nate gets to play.

Well as someone that researched the guy and talked to people in Australia that have worked with him I would say your are 100% wrong. For the Record the Cavs and Lakers were also scouting Jawai and very high on him so I am thinking given the quality of teams that showed interest in him they saw a lot of talent and upside in him.

The fact you would even make a comment when you know nothing about a guy makes very little sense. I mean in your own comments you make what your saying mean nothing.

Nobody touches they guys or boxes out on rebounds, lets see how his game translates in the NBA where players play defense. I hope he becomes a solid C in the NBA.

Once Jawai plays, O'Neal gets the boot.

This is the beauty of the NBA. You never know what you've got. I'd love to see him go with the big boys. But as far as video compilations go, you could put one together featuring Michael (my age and retired) Stewart that'd look good.

Would be kind of hard to do it if you had to pick just one game to get the clips from though.

This video is quirte amusing though. Looks almost like a pickup game, all the guys smiling and high fiving, even thje opposite team. Look at after the block he makes. Great stuff. You'd never see that here.

True, but I liked the look of that jump shot from about 20 feet away, and his verticle looked pertty good.

I watched him play in summer league and that is obviously a level down from NBA but I saw encouraging signs that he can be a solid player in the league a good rebounder and someone that can pound the glass. He also has some shot blocking and defensive skills. He can set picks and moves well for his massive size.

He made a lot of turnovers but I expect that from a young player. If we are giving Andrea Bargnani almost 3 years to show us something I think we can live with Jawai learning on the job a bit.

Oh I hope Doug's wrong about next season - I can't wait to see him play. I bet he can't wait to get onto the court either.

The clip was an all-star game clip but atleast he has the shot and can run the court. Good signs but I don't think his game will translate well in the NBA. Although I can't wait for him to play
