Raptors James Johnson sent to Kings for 2nd Round Pick

Quote:
The Toronto Raptors, in a deal designed to create some additional salary-cap space, have agreed to traded forward James Johnson to the Sacramento Kings for a future second-round pick, according to sources with knowledge of the deal.

The trade could be consummated as soon as Monday, sources said./p

Johnson is scheduled to earn $2.8 million in 2012-13, which is the final year of his current contract./p

The Raptors, meanwhile, continue to search for a workable trade to find a new home for veteran point guard Jose Calderon. ESPN.com reported BLANKday that the Raptors and Calderon's representatives were working on a trade together in the wake of Toronto's recent acquisition of Kyle Lowry to be the starter./p

The Raptors have let it be known that they prefer not to release Calderon through the NBA's amnesty clause, which is only an option through Tuesday until next summer's one-week amnesty window in July 2013./p

“We have had a few more trade inquiries regarding Jose (but) the scenario doesn’t seem to present itself to a trade today," Raptors president and general manager Bryan Colangelo told the Toronto Sun at summer league in Las Vegas. "But we’ll continue to monitor that and just try to determine whether it’s going to work in the long run./p

As for making use of the amnesty clause before Tuesday night's deadline, Colangelo told the Sun that he doesn’t “anticipate doing something with amnesty, but until the deadline passes, you never want to close that door.”/p

Johnson averaged 9.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.4 blocks per game last season but is no longer in Toronto's plans after the recent arrival of Landry Fields and Linas Kleiza's return to health.

terrible trade for us, steal for sacremento. I sincerely believe this kid is the second coming of marion, terrible shooting and all. we could have gotten so much more for him, but I'm assuming this means we for sure have one more move left.

I was trying to post this but for some reason cannot copy and paste from the iPad.

Anyways... I'll say this. A second rounder isn't GREAT return for JJ but he must have done something really bad when he and coach Casey got in to it near the end of the season. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the Raptors' brass and let them make the decision on this. They clearly know the situation better than we do and apparently JJ had no future with this team for whatever reason - I'm sure we'll never know what he did to earn his suspension.

I liked JJ and the energy that he brought. He was a good defensive player, but was a little too inconsistent. If he starts, or at least plays some time with the starters...Cousins, Thomas Robinson and JJ look like a REALLY tough (physically) front-court.

I wonder if this is a move on its own, or if this freeing up salary move is a precursor to something else - possibly where we could take on more salary.

too bad we couldn't have moved LINAS instead. JJ was a lot easier to move the LINAS obviously. damnit. this dude hustled on defence! blocked shots from the weak side like nobodies business at small forward.

our improved defence from last year is NOT going to be as stable this season.

james johnson is such a talented player, he has athletic gifts that very few have in the nba

the problem is the dude is a headcase, he can't get out of his own way, if he just focused on playing defense and let the offense come to him he would be a much more valuable player

put money on the kings having the first team feud of the season next year

With Lowry, Fields and Jonas coming in I think we'll be fine.

don't forget that 1st rounder came from trading Bosh.

So basically Bosh is worth a 2nd rounder

Bad trade, we didn't need capspace but acted like we did

But that Bosh trade was such a steal. We temporarily got Jerryd Bayless (future Memphis Grizzlies hall of famer), David Andersen (the whiter version of Bargs), Alexis Ajinca (the brown version of Bargs), hit me on my Peja, and our first rounder back which we originally traded to get JO out of here. I believe we almost got Pietrus too with the TPE.

Goodbye Ime Udoka of the North. It's fun watching bench guys fill the starting role for an entire season, and do OK out there. I always root for players like James Johnson.

If the pick is not protected, it wil likely be in the 33-36 range because Sac is a mess. We gave up the 28th pick (2011) to get Johnson. The drop-off ain't too bad, but it's dissapointing that we couldn't get something of better value. Initially it looked like we stole from Chicago. Now Sac is stealing from us. Johnson is worth a mid 1st rounder, at least. He is a rotation player with the potential to start on a playoff team if he improves his jumper and decision making.

i really hope there's a potential deal out there that has us accumulating cap, otherwise, wtf. this guy is hating 'this deal will bring us flexibility for future trades'.

We're hearing that over here too. Flexibility. It's basically saying we might suck, but we are saving the owner money, so fans can go suck it.

Obviously the situation this season with Casey went deeper than some believed. For him this is pretty much what I expected. On a good team he's a 20mpg bench player. I liked Johnson quite a bit but it's not a great loss imo.

I will say this, if we don't trade for a starting SF this deal looks worse.

This is crazy,I had a feeling that I'd wake up to hearing a Raptor got traded, only I hoped and thought it would be Calderon. I don't like the move because JJ is worth more but it's necessary.

I liked him a lot, and if we don't get a legit starter, this was a stupid move, the guys got skills, and plays pretty good D

Really question this. If he get's his head straightened out, the ceiling is very high for him and we might regret this move. It makes us weaker at protecting the rim and will leave Bargnani more exposed on defence.
