I remember last summer i flipped the chanel and they were talking about some Toronto FC game, it was a post game recap. The score ended up 1-0 i believe. They then showed the stats and the shots on goal were 2-1....

I respect all sports.

Saying any of um suck is simply childish and close minded.

Since this turned into a sport bashing thread I'd like to say why the fuck is poker a sport... and why does it continue to get airtime?

It isn't a sport. And neither is darts, bowling, curling, auto racing.

I nearly pissed myself laughing.
If it was the home opener for the TFC, the final was 2-0 and it was a great game!

I was there....Just because there are no shots, doesn't mean there was no action.

There were plenty of shots that went wide and great defensive plays in the box.

I'm not the hugest soccer fan but I just bought seasons this year (partly for fun, partly to bring clients/colleagues and partly for investment) and after that game I didn't regret it one bit.

Some of you guys sound like silly kids with ADD.

Football (soccer here) is without a doubt the most popular sport in the world. So clearly billions of people feel differently than some of you. Far be it from me to try to convince anyone, but 1-0 games can be crazy exciting and very intesnse. Scoring is merely one part of a game which has many dimensions / subplots. Obviously interest level plays a huge role in that, but for those that don't get it, that's OK.

I am not even remotely interested changing peoples preferences. Hate what you hate / Like you what you like. There are many options out there for people to enjoy.

I try to watch Toronto FC because that's the closest thing I have to a popular team to follow, but after ten minutes of back and forth in the mid-field and 20 out of bounds incidents, I turn the channel.

I don't think it's silly to find the game boring if you don't have some sort of vested interest in a team. I played for five years as a kid and hated it. Loved basketball and tennis, hated soccer. Say soccer never existed and someone decided to start a league. It wouldn't fly.

Sorry, but to go on and on about how boring something is and ramming it down peoples throats when a lot of those people disagree is silly/douchy/pointless/unnessesary. Like seriously who cares. You don't like something: fine. But can you at least let other people enjoy it? If someone doesn't like something why does that person feel the need to keep putting it down in the faces of those that do like it?

As for your suggestion about starting a league if a sport never exsisted and how it would work, Aar.... dude, i don't even know what that means. Would it be such a crazy notion to "kick ball into net?" So crazy that nobody would 'get it?' How about 'throwing ball through hoop"? or 'throwing ball to have someone hit with stick'?

There are embelishments in every sport. But soccer is on a whole other level. But I was saying it was boring, diving is a whole other topic.

Missing the net the size of a small house? Play soccer at an even remotely high level and you'll see it's incredibly difficult like any sport. We tend to assume it would be easy, but I can assume the same things about any sport.

As for soccer being on a whole other level. I guess my point to that is I've seen primma donnas in every sport. Baseball, soccer, hockey, basketball yet we tend to say, well, that sport there, they do it the worst out of everyone. Just look at the youtube clips. Well, I can find that about almost anything.

I'm always surprised at how our society, in general, tends to be close minded about everything. It's almost difficult for us to say there's some merit there. I may not enjoy watching curling, but it's damn hard to do and I give them props. Baseball, while it can be boring, I enjoy because of the difficulty to actually hit a ball. Hockey, not my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the skill. I can go on and on and on.

It truly becomes difficult to post or even read here sometimes, as its one extreme to another.

I'm not knocking anyone for liking it, I'm just saying that there's something to the 'boring' remarks. If someone's doing that to get a rile, whatever. I ain't. I see the debate and I chime in. It's not about the kicking of the ball into a net, or the throwing of a ball through a hoop. I think it has to do with how concentrated the play is. A soccer pitch is way too big to provide any sort of constant action. I watched a bit of the Leaf game last night and there's a scoring opportunity every 10-15 seconds. Basketball, there's a play every what, 10 - 30 seconds? Baseball, every pitch is a possible play. I've watched soccer matches where absolutely nothing happens for a large chunk of time besides the tooting of plastic horns and the waving of flags. Some say it's all part of a bigger strategy, but I don't see it and I take it a lot don't. It's not an ADD thing. I think soccer stands on its own as a unique case as far as the sports we're talking about here are concerned.

in many ways rugby is the same as soccer. you may not see scoring plays every minute, but it's the overall strategy - the chess match of positioning and opportunity - that frames much of what is exciting.

if you're into goals, goals, goals, soccer will not be for you. if you are interested in strategy and the cumulative pressure of trying to create opprtunities with spacing and if you are into the way guys can compete for turf and for positioning when the ball is nowhere close to them, you will find something to like in soccer.

bashing what you don't like is just straight up useless, although most of us are guilty of it from time to time.

As i said earlier far be it from me to try to convince you or anyone who doesn't like soccer of anything, but the irony is that WAYYYYYY more people on this planet prefer this boring game to any other sport. In the bigger picture these people make up the majority of sports fans. Basketball and baseball would love to have that kind of international popularity that soccer has to i think your criticisms are offbase.

Another thing i think is offbase is your assesment of the game and then bringing up baseball as a counter point. I like baseball, but come on every pitch is a possible play? For all the pitches thrown in a game, how many actual exciting plays do we get to see? Without saying a number, i'll just say the ratio ain't great!

However, just to use that same line of thinking, every pass or every 'ball' as they say in soccer has the possibility of something amazing too. Just off the top of my head i'll give you an example. Last saturday in TFC's home opener, the toronto keeper got posession of the ball, spotted a run by his winger and booted it upfield. Winger strikes the ball with first touch and scores. Brilliant pass and vision, two touches and a goal. so yeah - pretty much anything can happen at any time.

It's all a matter of personal opinion and my initial post was more directed to the people who were just hating rather than anything. Again i don't care if people don't like it - that's their choice, I just don't appreciate when i am told what i like is bad or worse than what they like. This 'sports elitism' is just ridiculous.
