Jack let losing starting job affect him

Quote:
Being a professional basketball player comes with its share of charms, but your sense of self can take a beating if you let things get to you, which is what Jack says happened to him when he was moved to the bench while the Raptors were in the midst of a 1-9 stretch that was putting their playoff hunt in jeopardy.

“I let my emotions get the best of me,” Jack said after practice yesterday in preparation for tonight’s game against the Utah Jazz. “I took the change personally, which I shouldn’t allow myself to do and let it affect my play and taking myself out of the equation.”

Statistically Jack was performing to his usual standard, but Triano was looking to create a bit more flow in the offence and decided to go back to Calderon from whom Jack took over the starting point guard spot after the Spaniard suffered a leg injury in December.

Privately, team officials allowed that they would have endorsed more changes to the lineup, but point guard was the spot with the most depth.

Still, being the guy to lose his job when the team was slumping was a blow to Jack’s pride.

“It kind of stinks that they [did] that at that stage, obviously everyone is going to associate the way we’re playing with how I’m playing,” said Jack, who has averaged 8.5 points, 5.8 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 21 minutes a game since coming off the bench, with the Raptors 3-1 since the change. “I know that’s not the case, but it’s part of the job.”

Also part of the job when in the midst of a four-year, $20-million (U.S.) contract is that bad weeks at the office are frowned upon.

“That’s why we get paid what we get paid,” he said. “We’re supposed to be able to perform on a daily basis and be consistent. They do you the favour of giving you a certain amount of money you have to do them the favour of putting out.

“No one’s perfect, regardless of what stage you’re at in your career. We all make mistakes and have rough patches and bumps in the road, but you try to make them as minimal as possible.”

It appears he’s done just that. There was the dunk – “I didn’t think they expected me to dunk it, so I had to go and look at them and get some smiles out of the guys” – and a general upbeat attitude that is as much part of Jack’s tool box as his ability to finish tough shots in the lane.

“I think it’s important for everyone,” Triano said of Jack’s return to form. “If you’re playing on a team and you look back and the guy making the calls and bringing the ball up the floor and they’re hanging their head or in a sour frame of mind you start wondering what’s wrong with him instead of what can we do to get better.”

You get the sense that Triano won’t have to worry about Jack hanging his head any time soon.

heh. when Hedo's pissed off he plays better. We should look to anger him before every game.

As for Jack, yeah i'm glad he's 'over it'. Being a sub and a starter in basketball is such a touchy subject. It's like as long as you're getting your minutes who really cares whether it's at the start of the game?

During the slump, Derozan struggles and hits the rookie wall, Andrea struggles with being option #1 and admits he has been lazy during games, Hedo has been a bust, but the guy who has been the most consistent outside of Bosh has been demoted to the bench. When will this organization stop giving special treatment to certain players, and learn its not about offense, but about making stops, grabbing boards, and doing the little things to win games.

I don't blame him to be honest. He was well since Jose went down. And I think Jose being put back in as the starter was more about sheer change in general, since Hedo/Bargs/Bosh obviously weren't gonna be changed. So under those cicumstances, I could see why he'd be a little pissed. At the same time I'm glad he's over it and is moving on and seems to be back on his game. Let's BALL!!!

I am no psychic here, but do you guys think Hedo dislikes Toronto fans for the most part? or if he screws up he just takes it out really hard on himself? because he's had a few rough games where he's made big shots near the end and he had the "fuck you toronto fans" attitude which also could have also been interpreted as "fuck it's about time i made a shot, shoulda made shot like that all god damn game!" *end of dialogue*

i don't know if he dislikes toronto fans... I don't think so. I've seen some of those expressions you refer to and i tend to think it's more about frustration with his own game.

personally i don't care what he thinks of the fans. I just want him to have some success. I really don't care about how he does it or how it makes him feel.

Our coach is a fat pussy that puts up with the players playing lazy basketball. T needs to step up, grow at least one nut and make some changes. Hero still complains so why not for one game atvleast run more plays through the guy, see f that changes things. Hero was big for Orlando because he handled the ball a lot more...

Sometimes moves by the coaches are not 100% their control. Do you think Hoffa deseved to be in the starting line-up or did Babcock have some influence. Do you think Triano has the balls to put Hedo (BC's prize pick-up) on the bench. Like I said before, there some players on this team that get special treatment.

Guys, the best part of the season is coming.

Let's see what happens, and let's hope our players can perform to expectations. Hopefully the offensive chemistry with Hedo comes soon

I think the whole change to the lineup stinks on first look, but if it means Triano feeling like he's able to end games with Jack, then it works for me.

Well he has every right to be disapointed. He's been the best guard for us all year long.

At least now, Jose's pride wont be hurt when he's sitting on the bench during the 4th sneaky move JT!

Glad to see Jack get over it ! He never deserved to get the starting job in the first place and Jose never did play himself out of the starters role. So really are we back to the way it was drawed up and the reason Jack was signed in the first place.Jack is a good point guard and paying 13 mil for both is worth it. We need both guys and really they will be getting close to the same minutes anyways.
Jay is playing it smart, coaching in the pros and being effective handling player egos is key to survival in coaching in NBA.

We haven't won shit the last 18 months with Jose as our starter. Look at our record with that turnstile as our starter.
