Jack Armstrong on Lowry, Fields

Armstrong: Five Quick Thoughts on the NBA

Quote:

1. KYLE LOWRY: A nice trade by the Raptors; I like him a whole lot. A very good defender and floor leader that continues to improve and can be a capable long-term answer at the point guard spot for them. Good contract value and will fit in Dwane Casey's system.

2. LANDRY FIELDS: Is he a good fit for Toronto? Yes! Do I like his contract? No! I understand what they were trying to do, blocking the Knicks on a sign-and-trade deal with the Suns for Steve Nash. Only time will tell if they get the proper money and wins in return on his deal. Solid overall player who will be even better in Toronto in their system. I think he's got good upside and he's a 'winning player.' He'll play good minutes and be a positive impact guy. There will be a bunch of pressure on him due to his large salary to elevate his game another notch or two but he can do it. He better be ready from the jump. They need better play on the wing and with that money invested, it's imperative that he take another step.
Question: If the Landry Fields contract was to block the Knicks from doing a S&T for Nash, why would they have to put in a poison pill final bloated year in the contract? Wouldn't any signed offer sheet do the trick no matter what?

Because your forgetting that fields has to agree to sign, I'm sure they offered him less but he told them his price. We could always just back out, but that would make FA even more weary of Toronto than they are now.

To be honest i don't mind the contract. The first two years are 5Mil, the final year though is ugly!

First 2 years are great. Is he worth that last year, we'll see. If not there are plenty of teams that could use an expiring that may net the Raps a nice asset in return.

for us it will be 6.3M 6.3M 6.3M

or maybe 6M 6.3M 6.6M?

Anyhow its clearly overpaid but also clearly a usable two-way rotation player

Meehhh, overpayed sure but it's not insane by any stretch.

IF we ever run two million short in an important trade, this move would prove to be horrible. Otherwise, it makes little difference, it's short term contract for an useful player who could actually grow to worth his pay by the 3rd year.

LX 07-09-2012 10:15 PM

He serves no need. So it is pretty insane.

bjjs 07-09-2012 11:01 PM

He served the need to block the Nash sign & trade with NY

Is there any chance that behind the scenes, they agreed to offer the contract only if Nash signs in TO?

Defense on the perimeter?

Rebounding?

Smart, unselfish play?

Teams ALWAYS have a need for players like this. Fields is the kind of kid who could have probably gone to the Spurs, done exceedingly well and had us saying "Damn... S.A. is so lucky... they always seem to grab these hidden gems".

Now we have one... and we have a coach who can probably get the most out of him. I don't see any negatives here.

Fields is way better than people are giving him credit for.

LOG 07-09-2012 11:42 PM

Fields is really not a bad player, give him some time to show what he can do in Casey's system for fuck sakes. its not like we signed Rasual Butler to 6 mil contract..

everybody loves jack armstrong for making the same opinion of the fan

what really pisses me off is this quote, like the player not the contract

do i like the player yes do i like the contract no, thats a fucking cop out

i suggested in several threads that we should target fields not because of hte knicks because he can actually play

i wouldn't have been shocked if the knick offerd 15 million over the same term, so we over paid by 4 miliion over a three year contract

big deal, never known the raptors to spend over hte cap, owners are to fuckin cheap to allow management ot steop it up another level, so spending money on fields won't ever hurt us becuase the raps will never spend over 65 million dollars ever,

Fields is a decent player,I just think the timing of his offer sheet is off

Why? If Colangelo and company really wanted him then cool, but he's certainly more of a 2 guard then 3 and the Raps already have Derozan and Ross at that position. If they're hoping he can play the 3 then fine, but it's somewhat of a gamble for his price tag If they plan on keeping DD

Also,if they really wanted him, that's cool...but if they just offered him a contract to block the Knicks from getting Nash WITHOUT knowing for sure that would attract or resort Steve to coming to Toronto, then that's just stupid...I would say the same thing about the Nets if they gave up all those players and picks for Joe Johnson, just to see Deron Williams depart for Dallas anyway. They did it the smart way and ensured that the acquisition of Joe would keep Deron there. Unless Nash flat out lied or played Colangelo(which I doubt and see know reason for him to do) then I think it was a very bad tactic on our Bryan's part(hindsight or not).

Anyhow,Fields will likely be here and I think Casey will find a way to make it work.

Exactly. 2 years at that price is great. If he is even decent those 2 years we can easily trade his expiring contract in the 3rd year. I have a gut feeling he will excel in DCs system.

We dont know if the Nets had confirmation from the Deron before signing Joe. Also im hoping we are not keeping DD and somehow get a SF from trading him, Ed and filler. Regardless, might have over paid for Fields, but I think he will fit into Casey's system beautifully
