J.O. To Hecklers: 'I値l Be In The Game In A Second'

Raptors center Jermaine O'Neal was heckled by some fans during the team's season opener against the 76ers in Philadelphia on Wednesday.

"They were talking about how I didn’t have it anymore ... I wasn't in the game ... I make X amount of money," said O'Neal, who will make roughly $21 million this season.

"I said to 'em, 'Okay, hold on,' " O'Neal said later. "I said, 'I'll be in the game in just a second.' "

In just a second, indeed, O’Neal showed his first signs of explosiveness. He drove the lane. He dunked atop Sam Dalembert, the Sixers’ shot-blocking specialist, who fouled O’Neal in the tussle. But before O’Neal stepped to the charity stripe to make his first free throw in a Toronto jersey, he stopped and pointed at his tormentors.

O'Neal had 17 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists in his debut with the Raptors, which turned out to be a win over the 76ers.

convinced that Raptors fans are only happy when they're unhappy.

I'm thankful he didn't rush the fans in the crowd ala Artest and Jackson.

Guys, remember, JO charged into the stands only after the rumble between Artest and the fans was already in progress. He made a mistake, but it was while protecting a teammate, not getting back at hecklers. IMHO, that reaction demonstrates a lack of judgment, but a good heart and I will take someone like him to be by my side any time.

I'm just hoping that it doesn't take something like this to motivate him all the time.

If it does, guess we'll all have to buy season tikets.

If your own fans heckle you on the regular, it's time to request a trade.

According to Doug Smith's live blog, Elton Brand was being heckled by his own fans last night. Then again, that's Philly, different breed of fan.

No one cared about the Sixers last night. The fans had a completely another agenda.. their minds/focus were/was across the street.

First time I witness Mike showing this kind of emotion for a player. How touching. :P

It is nice to see someone on our side responding to a heckler by driving some nails in the home team's coffin. And it is nice to have a guy that will stand up for his teammates.

One completely underrated factor that Jermaine brings to our team is edge, or toughness.

Like KG going to Boston, who completely changed their defensive philosophy and team enthusiasm, Jermaine brings a much-needed attitude to our team.

The one-two punch of Jermaine and Sam Mitchell have done wonders for Bosh, who has such a fantastic personality as a human being, but not always as a basketball player.

Jermaine makes us not only bigger and more intimidating on D, but also meaner. Which, on a team of model citizens, is actually a very good thing.

--------------

I watched this video on youtube the other day with Dwayne Wade talking about playing in the NBA. Personally, I don't like Wade at all and I think he has a Jesus complex, but what he said was very smart. He said that he has no idea what kind of amazing stuff he is going to do on the court, but that when he steps onto the court he feels like he is no longer Dwayne Wade the person, but dons the cape of a superhero. You can see it in Wade's play - he's fearless.

Exactly. I've played team sports a lot, and one guy like JO can do wonders for his teammates' spirits. He is a mean machine.
