Default Isaiah Thomas and the Raptors

People often bring up how Isaiah Thomas screwed Toronto, but don't go into detail about how exactly he screwed them. I lived in Toronto at the time Isaiah left, but was in high school and don't remember the details surrounding his departure. I know that he:
-may have had unethical dealings with NCAA players
-attempted to become the majority owner of the Raptors
What else am I missing?

Thanks. This seems like a pretty busy forum. It wasn't a poor draft- for all his faults, Thomas has a pretty good eye for talent and has a decent track record in drafts.
Thomas was in Toronto for three drafts
95- 6th Stoudamire
96- 2nd Camby
97- 9th McGrady
Those are off the top of my head and Stoudamire might have been the seventh pick and Reeves to Vancouver the 6th pick.

as far as i remember, it was strictly around the ownership issue.

how he screwed us - he quit on minimum notice leaving us high and dry. i'm not sure how aware ownership was with him leaving, but it was a complete surprise to the rest of us. with him leaving, it also took the little credibility our organization had which lead to damon requesting to be traded as well.

thomas to this day still has a great eye for the college ranks, it's just that everything else isn't as cooperative

I remember the Stoudamire issue after he left. Isaiah is an icon and has a lot of street cred. Even if somebody didn't want to play in Canada, playing for Thomas was an opportunity. On the other hand you have Stu Jackson drafting Steve Francis, who had already said he wouldn't play for the Grizzlies... but that didn't stop Stu.

He wanted to be the owner, and buy out the original guy pre-MLSE. But he was all talk, and was trading in favors all over the place and still couldn't scrape enough together, so he just up and left as GM. The Raptors were great as long as he could be the guy and run the whole show, but if not they weren't worth shit to him.

And then came the kicker - he used Damon's contract status as leverage. When he should have been resigning him to a new contract, he was instead trying to gain financial control, and holding Damon's ability to leave, if Isiah didn't get a sweetheart deal, over everyone's heads. Of course Isiah didn't get his deal, as a ton of the money he was scraping together was very questionable, and by the time it all played out, and Isiah left, Damon was without a contract extension, and no longer all that interested in the whole circus.

That's how I remember it, but of course I was only 8 at the time.

All indications are the Isiah had a good eye for drafting, but was pretty bad in all other aspects, including character ...

Zeke was a shady character long before he became involved with the Raps.

at least we made it to the playoffs once in a while, unlike atlanta who missed it for 11 years in a row or something ridiculous like that.

he sexually assaulted or had inappropiate dealings with many staff in the Raptors organization, believe that, he is a perv and an idiot.

This is how I remembered it:

1- It started with his relationship with our 1st Coach Brendan Malone (good coach). Brendan was trying to win games and he didn't play the young players enough for Zeke so he fired him after 1 year. Promoted Darrell Walker as coach (This guy has never been a head coach since, crap coach)

2- Wanted majority ownership but failed in his bid. He resigned... but not in classy way but like a bitch (we had like a teen-something losing streak). Darrel Walker was in his 2nd year as head coach and Damon Stoudamire was in his third year. Darrell Walker resigned like a bitch. Damon wanted a trade right away like a bitch because his mommy (Zeke) left and he had no tit to suck on.

3- Grunwald (money guy) was the assistant to Zeke and became the GM. Butch Carter the assistant to Darrell Walker became the head coach and Damon was traded.

*Note* Isaiah took over the CBA which was basketballs version of the CFL. He ran that so badly into the ground the NBA bought it and made it the DNBA.

As much as I like him as a player the guy has the worst managment skills in professional sports.

He was the birth of the Raptors bad reputation that is why no real GM would come here or real coaches would come here. Until BC came, we had NO GM with experience as a GM. 2 out of 7 of our coaches have had previous NBA head coaching experience before they got the Raptors job. Malone (1 year with us) & Wilkins (winniest and losingest coach in history) We have never been able to keep a 1st round picks here for majority of their careers.

Still bitter and Isaiah! Just a little
