Interesting Details Regarding Garbo's Buyout

Hmmm ... this is interesting. This from a Spanish paper, but apparently it was the Spanish federation that helped buyout Jorge's final season and not just us. That being said, how does this affect our cap and doesn't even affect it period? :confused2:

Quote:

"The Spanish basketball federation agreed to pay the Raptors $4.25 million to buy out the final year of Garbajosa's contract and he has since signed a contract with a Russian professional team. "

Add in the $1 million from last summer, and $5.25 Million is quite a hefty price to pay for having a glue-guy to play a few games in the olympics over two summer.

Also, apparently Garbajosa's insistence to play in the olympics burned a couple of NBA bridges. It seems like Colangelo had the backing of the NBA on this situation.

"The 31-year-old's decision to stick with Spain didn't endear him with many of the NBA's general managers and he said he had contact with just one team before signing with BC Khimki"

Aside from the ill-treatment of CV (yes i think CV deserve better from BC), BC's done a good job of running this organization.
I didn't see that in the article.

buy-outs don't effect the cap. it just cuts the cost of us paying for nothing in return.

hopefully they're paying because they feel guilty about letting him play last summer.

Two questions:

1) Can buyouts be used as expiring contracts in a trade?

2) What kind of cap space are we looking at next offseason or do we just have the MLE / LLE?

Unless I am mistaken all we have is Joey and APs contracts off the books but we would still be over the cap, so that leaves only the MLE and LLE.

If the team indeed didn't buy out his contract, then he is officially on our roster until his contract expires and the full amount of his contract counts against our cap and luxury tax figures. We should also, in theory, be able to trade his contract.

The financial dealings between Spanish federation and MLSE don't figure into the CBA.

If anyone is going to flop its going to be Solomon, not Ukic.

Well you never know. I mean Roko's what? 23? and Solomon is 30. Usually the younger ones start to flop first.

Apollo 08-01-2008 10:07 PM

All I know is Roko wasn't in the league solely because he was contractually obligated to a Euro team at a price which the Raptors couldn't afford to buyout at the time. Solomon is 30 and I ask you, whats his reason for not making the league until now?

LX 08-01-2008 10:43 PM

Teams were able to find a third string pg without having to scout Europe?
