Default Insider - Calderon Best Fits

Quote:
If you look around the league, it's not easy to find the perfect trade fit for Toronto's veteran point guard Jose Calderon. As a player in the final year of a deal that pays him $10.56 million this season, you have to figure that any trade partner would likely have to fit the following criteria:
A contending team that's willing to roll the dice on what could be only a few month's worth of Calderon.
A team with an expendable player, preferably a SG, SF or C, who they could offer as a centerpiece in return.

Lets take a look at some possibilities, shall we?

Indiana's Danny Granger is rumored to be on the block. The Pacers have played well without him this season, he's due to earn over $14 million next season, and Paul George's emergence makes him more expendable, but Indy would probably want more than an expiring contract with no guarantees beyond this season.

Utah is another obvious possibility, given the Jazz's gaping hole at point guard with Mo Williams expected to be sidelined through mid-to-late February. The problem is that Utah doesn't have much more than the expiring contracts of Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap (not a fit) to offer in return, unless the Raptors would be up for something like Marvin Williams ($7.5 million player option in 2013-14) and young swingman Alec Burks.

Dallas, Detroit and maybe even a team like Milwaukee could be other options. The Mavericks lack the trade chips, but need help at the point, while the Pistons and Bucks both have pieces to deal but aren't serious contenders.

I would take any of Jefferson, Milsap or Williams in a heartbeat for pylon. Doubt that happens though. Still say he's not being dealt.

I'd say we could have a solid packaging Calderon + Anderson + 2nd Rounder for either Danny Granger, Rudy Gay (3 team might be necessary), or maybe even Gerald Wallace whose having a very sub par season. And Jefferson would be amazing if we could resign him.

That package doesn't get you any of those players (Granger, Gay). Third team might get it done though depending if they can get a high pick or prospect thrown in.

No need for Williams. He is a massive underachiever. Playing for Utah gave him a change of scenery and a fresh start and he still failed to produce at an above average level. We'd have another overpaid wing. No thanks.

I can't see anybody really offering much more for Granger considering he's got a big contract and is coming off a long injury. We'd be offering Indiana cap relief in the form of an expiring + a solid rotation player in Alan Anderson, not to mention Calderon could be a great backup pg for them (could see him outplaying Paul George).

I might be the minority but I really hope we keep him and he re-signs here. I absolutely hate how terrible Lowry plays down the stretch and how he forces shit and can't run the offense properly. It makes me want to throw my remote at the TV almost every game. He also has the whole Bargs factor where he's extremely inconsistent. Some games he'll go off, other games he's utter crap. Pretty much the only thing he can do is attack (when he actually wants to do it) and play D. He isn't a #1 PG IMO.

He's good on all those teams and I believe he's a better fit than Conley in Memphis as starting PG

A couple of years ago I wanted Jose gone, but seeing Lowry, and our record with him as a starter and I really doubt that I want him as a starter. He gambles too much on D and when he struggles he really can't get it going by distributing the ball. He plays hard but I just don't like what I see when he is on the floor.
Jose outplayed him so far. We are 14-13 when Jose as a starter and 2-13 when Lowry was starting. Enough said. Time for Lowry to show what he can do.

Many teams could use Jose or at least an expiring
But I wonder if they could make an article about "Bargnani best fits"
there are no fits for him and his quite reasonable but long contract

Tommy.
I have said this before the reason Jose has played so well is because it is a contract year.

He needs to be traded & he knows it.

My position on Jose is the same now as it was before the season started ... sign him for cheap next year ... if not ... good bye

Jose doesn't hurt the organization ... we have way bigger needs. As a back-up with a stud starting guard, he would be perfect.

Lowry hasn't yet shown he is a better starting PG than Jose. Hopefully, that will change and Lowry may become our stud ... I doubt it though ... hoping I'm wrong.

Top 10-12 PG in the league with only drawback of not having defense gets constantly shit on. If I were him I'd sign with a title contender for a minimum and leave Lowry to run the Raptors offense.

And Bargns can surely be dealt for an expiring.

Best fit for Calderon and our organization is right under our nose....its right here folks in Toronto. Calderon is still our guy, he still has 2-3 good years ahead of him. We draft a stud in a year or 2 and we should be fine. Calderons veteran presence on this team is huge. He just continues to make the Lowry trade embarrassing.

If the Raptors could get Millsap for Calderon, they should take him and run. They'd still have Bird rights and advantage in resigning him. Worst case -- sign and trade opportunities. Also, if you have Millsap, it should be pretty easy to get Gasol if that's what Colangelo wanted. Millsap is a nice fit for the Lakers.
But I'd just try to resign him. Give him an extra year but a bit less money per year than the other teams. It'd be in his best interests to take it.

Jose has really elevated the games of Amir and Ed Davis. He would be a nice piece to develop Jonas. However, if the Raps think he would bolt in free agency, gotta trade him for mid-level draft pick or a young promising player. Last night, Clips are different team without Chris Paul. They trailed the majority of the game and lost to the worst team in the west (Suns). With the depth and weapons on that team, that need point guards who can distribute the ball. If Chris Paul is the future PG on that team, Bledsoe is expendable. Alson I would mind trading Jose for a mid-level draft pick. Trey Burke from Michigan would look good in Raps uniform.
